See Michelangelo’s most important works across four sites: the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican Museums, the Pietà in St Peter’s Basilica, Moses at San Pietro in Vincoli, and Christ Carrying the Cross at Santa Maria sopra Minerva. The first two stops are in Vatican City; the other churches are in Rome.

Where to see Michelangelo’s work: the four key sites

Site What to see Location
Vatican Museums Sistine Chapel ceiling and The Last Judgment Vatican City
St Peter’s Basilica Pietà Vatican City
San Pietro in Vincoli Moses, part of the tomb monument of Pope Julius II Rome
Santa Maria sopra Minerva Christ Carrying the Cross, also called Christ the Redeemer Rome

What to look for at each stop

Vatican Museums: the Sistine Chapel

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling from 1508 to 1512. Its nine central panels depict episodes from Genesis, and the ceiling covers approximately 500 square metres, according to Turismo Roma. More than two decades later, he painted The Last Judgment on the chapel’s altar wall, beginning in 1536 and completing it in 1541. The chapel is part of the Vatican Museums visit. Michelangelo did not paint the whole room: its earlier wall decoration was created by several other Renaissance painters. For visitor information, see the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel page.

St Peter’s Basilica: the Pietà

Michelangelo’s Pietà, a marble sculpture of Mary holding Christ, is displayed in a chapel inside St Peter’s Basilica. Turismo Roma dates it to 1498–1499 and identifies it as the only work Michelangelo signed. Check the official St Peter’s Basilica website for visitor information.

San Pietro in Vincoli: Moses and the tomb of Julius II

The basilica is known for Michelangelo’s Moses, part of the tomb monument of Pope Julius II. Turismo Roma dates the sculpture to 1513 and says the basilica has housed the monument since 1545. The monument visitors see is the realized version of a commission that was reduced after a long, difficult history; it is not the enormous tomb project originally envisioned. See Turismo Roma’s page for San Pietro in Vincoli.

Santa Maria sopra Minerva: Christ Carrying the Cross

The church holds a standing marble figure of Christ carrying the cross, often called Christ the Redeemer. The finished sculpture’s authorship needs a qualification: Michelangelo made an initial version that remained unfinished because of a defect in the marble. He sketched the visible version in Florence, and his students completed it in Rome in 1521. Find visitor information on Turismo Roma’s Santa Maria sopra Minerva page.

How to choose a route

For a focused visit, prioritize the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica for Michelangelo’s major frescoes and the Pietà. A broader itinerary adds the two Rome churches for Moses and Christ Carrying the Cross. San Pietro in Vincoli and Santa Maria sopra Minerva are separate church visits, so allow for travel between sites rather than treating them as one stop. The Turismo Roma Michelangelo itinerary lists these locations.

Check current visitor arrangements before you go

Opening hours, entry procedures, reservations, prices, and accessibility arrangements can change and differ by site. Check each institution’s official visitor information shortly before your visit, especially for the Vatican Museums and St Peter’s Basilica; do not assume one ticket or set of entry rules covers all four locations.
