The West Australian Pulse’s 2026 launch brought families, teachers and classmates of the student artists to the Art Gallery of Western Australia (AGWA). Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk officially opened the annual exhibition, and Kira Landuyt and Chloe Haagman received the Editor’s Choice and Catalyst awards, respectively, according to PerthNow’s May 25, 2026 report.
Inside the 2026 launch
PerthNow’s 2026 launch gallery captures the gathering around The West Australian Pulse, an annual exhibition featuring emerging student artists. The report describes an audience that included the young artists’ families, teachers and classmates. It does not specify the artists’ ages, schools or the exhibition’s eligibility rules.
McGurk officially opened the exhibition. The West Australian editor-in-chief Christopher Dore described the level of talent as “mind-boggling,” as quoted by PerthNow.

Earlier Pulse launches
Previous launch coverage offers a little context for the annual event, though awards named in different years should not be treated as the same category.
- 2025: PerthNow reported that more than 350 guests saw a first glimpse of that year’s exhibition, and named Freya Byrne as the Young Visual Artist Award recipient. The attendance figure is the publication’s report, not an audited count. See the 2025 launch gallery.
- 2024: PerthNow named Emily Sim’s carved wooden school desk, titled Reading, writing, ‘rithmetic, ranting, ruination…, as that edition’s Editor’s Choice Award winner. The report also described that exhibition as free and said it ran until October 6, but that historical information does not establish current admission or dates. See the 2024 launch gallery.
Gallery and visitor information
The 2026 PerthNow report is a launch-photo gallery, not a visitor guide, and does not state the exhibition’s public opening or closing dates. Current availability, admission, opening hours and ticketing are not established by these launch reports; check AGWA’s current visitor information before planning a visit.
