A former restaurant beside Subiaco’s Regal Theatre became Hayside Gallery, a temporary arts space announced in June 2025. Its opening exhibition, Tension, was scheduled to run through 19 July 2025. The available report documents the launch announcement, not whether the gallery or its programs remain active in October 2026.
What opened beside the Regal Theatre
PerthNow reported on 19 June 2025 that Hayside Gallery was launching that Thursday at 484 Hay Street, in the former Sicilian restaurant The Corner Italian. The venue sits next door to Subiaco’s Regal Theatre. The City of Subiaco partnered with urban-renewal organization SPACEMRKT on the temporary activation, and developer Westbridge Funds made the site temporarily available, according to the report. The inaugural exhibition: Tension
The gallery’s opening exhibition was titled Tension. Its announced run was from the 19 June 2025 launch through 19 July 2025, and it was described as exploring form, pressure and contrast across different media. Shaye Preston and Kate Dolan, from Side Project, were named as curators.

Why the space was temporary
According to PerthNow, Westbridge Funds offered the former restaurant to SPACEMRKT temporarily ahead of a major redevelopment next door. The report described the Regal as a heritage-listed 1930s theatre and said part of it would be demolished for accessibility upgrades, additional toilets and new bar facilities. Those are details reported in 2025; the article does not establish the present status of the redevelopment.
Subiaco mayor David McMullen said the partnership supported the transformation of vacant shopfronts into places for community use. SPACEMRKT director Joel Benichou described the creative potential of overlooked spaces. Their remarks framed Hayside Gallery as a temporary way to put an otherwise vacant site to use while redevelopment was anticipated.

Is Hayside Gallery open now?
The 2025 report is evidence of the gallery’s opening announcement and the program planned at that time. It does not confirm that Hayside Gallery is still operating, that Tension ran exactly as scheduled, or that workshops, residencies or mural activities are currently available. The report listed opening days as Thursday through Sunday, but those hours belong to the original announcement rather than a current listing.
