Brick Science’s fan-made LEGO lightsaber pairs a brick-built hilt with a clear, illuminated blade reinforced from the inside. A long LED strip supplies the red glow, while a battery pack and switch are concealed in the hilt. Gizmodo reported that the build can be swung without coming apart, though it published no measured durability test or complete instructions.
How the blade is built
The design uses clear casing tubes as the blade’s outer shell, with LEGO Technic pieces inside for reinforcement. That internal structure is intended to add strength while allowing some flex, rather than making the blade a solid, rigid rod.

Gizmodo describes the blade as holding together during swinging, but gives no test method, force limit, or durability measurements. Treat that as a report about this particular build, not a guarantee that a replica will survive hard impacts.
How the lights and power fit in
A long LED strip runs along the blade. A battery pack and power switch provide power, with the electronics hidden in the LEGO hilt. The report describes the resulting glow as red, but does not identify the strip model, voltage, battery type, wiring, or electrical ratings.

Those omissions matter if you want to reproduce the build: the source explains the overall arrangement, not how to choose compatible electrical components or connect them safely. It does not provide a wiring diagram or a complete parts list.

- Clear casing tubes for the blade exterior.
- LEGO Technic pieces to reinforce the inside of the blade.
- A long LED strip that fits the blade and produces the desired color.
- A compatible battery pack and switch concealed in the hilt.
Before sourcing parts, check that the casing can accommodate both the internal reinforcement and the LED strip. The report provides no dimensions, piece IDs, tube material, LED length, power rating, or supplier, so compatibility must be established for the specific parts you choose.
Visible LEDs versus a softer glow
The clear casing makes the illuminated strip visible. Gizmodo’s reporter suggested frosting the casing to obscure the individual red LEDs and soften the appearance of the light. That is a design suggestion, not a reported test: the article gives no measured brightness or evidence about how much frosting changes the effect.

For a build meant to be seen in motion, the decision is a visual trade-off. Keeping the casing clear preserves the visible light points; frosting it may make the blade look more diffuse, but the result depends on the casing and lighting components used.

Andrew Liszewski’s March 27, 2023, Gizmodo report credits Brick Science’s YouTube channel and documents the design at a high level. It does not include a step-by-step tutorial, a reproducible bill of materials, runtime or brightness figures, or controlled impact testing. The build is therefore best understood as a construction concept: a recognizable LEGO hilt around separate power hardware, paired with a clear, internally reinforced blade that lights up.
