Thread painting is hand embroidery that uses long-and-short stitches, changing colors, and carefully chosen stitch directions to create shaded transitions that look painterly. It is also called needle painting or silk shading, and you can learn the technique with ordinary embroidery supplies rather than a special kit.

What thread painting is—and how it works
Thread painting is a technique, not a particular product or rigid pattern category. Its main stitch is long-and-short stitch: rows of stitches of varying lengths that interlock or overlap. As you introduce a neighboring color into the previous color, the uneven edges soften the boundary and suggest a gradual change in tone.

The Royal School of Needlework (RSN) lists silk shading as also known as needle painting, long-and-short stitch embroidery, thread painting, painting with a needle, and opus plumarium. Silk is traditional, but the name does not mean silk is required; the RSN notes that the technique is now often worked in stranded cotton or synthetic threads. RSN StitchBank: Silk shading

Color blending is only part of the effect. Stitch direction can follow a petal’s curve, a feather’s growth, or another feature of the subject, helping describe its form as well as its light and shadow.
Choose a thread-painting approach
| Approach | How stitches and color describe form | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Natural silk shading | Both stitch angle and thread color change to render the form. | The RSN describes this as traditionally used for animals and birds, but that is a tradition rather than an exclusive rule. |
| Tapestry shading | Stitches remain vertical while color changes represent the design. | The RSN describes this as traditionally used for clothes and people; it is not a restriction on what you may depict. |
For a realistic botanical or animal subject, changing stitch angle to follow the shape can make the shading feel more dimensional. A more uniform direction can instead give a design a controlled, graphic effect. Neither approach is universally best: choose based on the form, the look you want, and how comfortable you are managing stitch direction.

Gather a simple beginner setup
You do not need specialist equipment to make a first sample. The Embroiderers’ Guild of America (EGA) acorn tutorial gives one concrete setup: cotton or linen fabric, a four- or five-inch embroidery hoop, scissors, a size 9 embroidery needle, and DMC embroidery thread. For the long-and-short stitching, the tutorial generally uses one strand of floss with the size 9 needle. Its basketweave detail uses a separate tapestry needle and two strands. Those are choices for that project, not standards for every design. EGA: Free Acorn Thread Painting Tutorial

- Fabric: Start with a stable, tightly woven ground such as cotton or linen. A School of Stitched Textiles overview also recommends tightly woven linen or silk. Select a fabric that supports your chosen thread and stitch scale.
- Thread: Stranded cotton is a practical option; silk offers a traditional sheen, while synthetic thread is another option noted by the RSN. Fiber choice is a matter of the effect and handling you prefer, not a test of whether the work is “proper.”
- Needle: Use an embroidery needle suited to the fabric and thread. The EGA size 9 example is a reference point for its setup, not a universal specification.
- Hoop or frame: Keep the working area comfortably supported and evenly tensioned. The School of Stitched Textiles recommends a well-tensioned hoop or frame.
- Scissors: Small embroidery scissors are useful for trimming thread ends close to the work.
Make a first shaded sample
- Choose a small shape with a clear light-to-dark change. A leaf, rounded fruit, or simple acorn cap gives you a manageable area in which to practice blending.
- Mark the direction of the form. Before stitching, decide whether your stitches will follow the shape or stay in a consistent direction. For natural shading, plan to alter the angle as the form turns; for tapestry shading, keep stitches vertical and let color shifts carry the effect.
- Begin with one area and a small color range. The EGA acorn example works from darker areas toward lighter ones and uses a midtone between selected colors. Use that as one workable sequence rather than a rule: the important point is to make neighboring colors overlap.
- Work long-and-short stitches in uneven lengths. Avoid a perfectly straight boundary between rows. Vary the stitch lengths so the next color can enter between the ends of the previous stitches.
- Introduce the next shade into the edge. Overlap stitches from the new color into the preceding color. The EGA tutorial recommends this overlap, along with varied stitch lengths, to make the transition less visible.
- Step back and inspect the transition. If the color boundary looks like a hard stripe, add a midtone or work another short, irregular row into the edge. If the stitches obscure the shape, revisit their direction rather than adding more colors.
How to choose colors, fabric, and scale
Think of a shaded area as a sequence of neighboring color zones, not necessarily a set of perfectly blended paint-like bands. A small palette is easier to control while learning; a middle value between two noticeably different shades can help bridge their boundary. Let the stitch ends intermix rather than lining every new row up with the last.

Match your material choices to the design. Fine, closely placed stitches on a stable ground suit small details; larger shapes leave more room to vary stitch lengths and angles. Choose hoop or frame dimensions that support the actual working area, and avoid stretching the fabric so tightly that its weave is distorted.
For a first project, the EGA acorn tutorial provides both a materials example and a walkthrough of long-and-short stitching. Thread painting’s history has more than one strand
The RSN says silk shading was used in medieval England as part of Opus Anglicanum, chiefly for robes and also for angels and animals; it notes that tapestry shading appears in some later pieces. That is one documented strand of the technique’s history, not proof of a single origin for every practice called thread painting.
Leicester Museums describes Mary Linwood working worsted wool onto woven linen or linen-wool cloth, using many colors and thread thicknesses to build texture and depth. The museum says she used straight stitches of varied length and density, then known as needle-painting. It reproduces William Gardner’s 1838 account of her working process: “I saw her at work… with pincushions all round her, stuck with needles, threaded with worsted of every colour, and after having touched the picture with a needle instead of a brush, she would recede five or six pages back to view the effect.” Leicester Museums: Mary Linwood—Materials and Making
