What is the Midnight Blooms Quilt?
Published by AllPeopleQuilt on June 14, 2013, and credited to American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, the project is inspired by Kim Diehl’s Late Bloomers. Laura Boehnke is credited as the quilt tester. The finished throw measures 65-1/2 inches square, with blocks finishing at 9 inches square. The page names Robert Kaufman Fabrics’ Oriental Traditions collection for the fabrics pictured, but does not establish whether that collection is still available.

The design puts red and black star blocks alongside hourglass patchwork in the center. Flowers, leaves, stems, and circles are appliquéd along the inner border; large hourglass units form the outer border. The publisher describes the look as metallic glints in Asian-inspired fabrics paired with fusible appliqué and three sizes of hourglass blocks. How is the quilt constructed?
Piece the star and hourglass blocks
The geometric sections are made from star blocks and triangle-based hourglass units in three sizes. The center combines red and black stars with hourglass blocks, while larger hourglass units build the outside border. The finished block size is 9 inches square; use the pattern’s cutting and assembly instructions for the individual pieces.

Fuse and stitch the appliqué
Fusible web is used to position the flowers and foliage on the inner border. The pattern’s approach includes zigzag stitching to secure the appliqué. Follow the web manufacturer’s directions, and plan for both patchwork piecing and decorative machine stitching in the project.
Layer, quilt and bind
Layer the completed top with the 74-inch-square batting and backing, quilt as desired, then bind the quilt with the black floral strips. The instructions specify a 1/4-inch seam allowance for construction.
