A throw quilt is a smaller quilt intended for casual use on a sofa or easy chair. “Throw” describes its use, not a universally fixed size, so check the dimensions of each quilt against the person, furniture, and amount of drape you want. A quilt is typically made from a top, a warm middle layer called batting or wadding, and a backing, held together with stitching or ties.
What is a throw quilt?
A quilt is a layered textile: a decorative top, an insulating filler called batting or wadding, and a backing. The top may be pieced from fabric sections, made with appliqué, or designed as a single cloth. Quilting stitches or ties join the layers. The International Quilt Study Center & Museum explains the basic construction in its guide to what quilts are.

A throw quilt is a quilt made or sold for use as a smaller cover—often over the legs or shoulders while sitting, or as an accent on a sofa or chair. It is not a distinct construction method: a quilt can be a throw, bed covering, or wall textile depending on its dimensions and intended use.
What size is a throw quilt?
There is no single required or authoritative standard throw-quilt measurement established by the available sources. Retailers and makers may use “throw” differently, so rely on the listed dimensions rather than the size label alone.

For couch or chair use, compare the quilt’s width and length with the seat, the person who will use it, and whether you want a close lap cover or fabric that hangs over the furniture. If more than one person will share it, check that its dimensions suit that use. When buying online, confirm whether the dimensions are stated before or after quilting, if the seller provides that detail.

- Dimensions and drape: Check the actual measurements against the furniture and intended use.
- Surface feel: Look at the fabric on both the top and backing; these are the surfaces you will touch.
- Warmth and weight: These depend on the fill material and how much fill the quilt contains, as well as the fabric and construction.
- Construction: Consider the stitching or ties, seams, and whether the maker describes the quilt as intended for regular use.
- Care: Read the care label and choose a product whose cleaning requirements fit your routine.
- Price: Compare cost in light of the listed materials and construction. Hand-stitched and machine-stitched products may differ in price; prices vary by product and market.
Material is a trade-off, not a universal ranking. Sleep Foundation’s 2026 consumer buying guide describes cotton as light and breathable, wool as insulating and breathable, and polyester as often affordable and comparatively easy to care for, while noting that products vary. Check the actual fiber content and care instructions rather than inferring them from appearance or a broad material label.
The same guide offers around 200 GSM for summer quilts and 400 GSM or more for winter quilts as shopping heuristics. These are consumer-guide suggestions, not a universal standard or a guarantee of warmth; use them only as one comparison point alongside fiber, construction, and the product’s stated care and use.

What goes inside a quilt, and how does that affect a throw?
The middle layer is called batting or wadding. It supplies much of a quilt’s loft and insulation, while its type and amount affect weight and how the finished quilt feels. A product description may identify the fill material, but it may not give enough detail to predict warmth precisely; compare the description, dimensions, and care label for the particular quilt.
For a handmade throw, choose batting according to the intended use, desired flat or puffy appearance, quilting method, laundry needs, and the batting manufacturer’s instructions. The Quilters’ Guild’s layering guide discusses selecting batting and assembling the quilt layers.

How do you wash a throw quilt?
For a new retail throw, follow its sewn-in care label. Quilts can differ in fiber, dyes, batting, and construction, so one washing method is not safe for every product. Do not assume a quilt is machine-washable simply because it is used as a blanket.
For an antique, heirloom, fragile, silk-containing, or otherwise valuable quilt, seek advice from a textile conservator before wet cleaning. The Canadian Conservation Institute cautions that a wet quilt becomes heavy and that washing-machine and dryer action stresses fabric and stitching; its quilt-care guidance advises against machine washing and drying in a conservation context. The International Quilt Museum also warns that washing can cause dye bleeding, agitation, and abrasion, and recommends consulting a conservator before washing an heirloom in its care and conservation guidance. These preservation recommendations should not replace the care label for an ordinary modern throw made for laundering.

How should you store a valuable quilt?
For long-term preservation, keep a quilt away from strong light, pests, and damp or otherwise unstable conditions. Rolling is preferable where practical; if folding is necessary, pad the folds to reduce stress. The Canadian Conservation Institute discusses rolling and padded folds, while the International Quilt Museum recommends cushioning folds with archival tissue or washed muslin and avoiding direct contact with ordinary cardboard or wood. These are conservation measures for textiles being preserved, not requirements for everyday use of a washable throw.
