“Candy Cane Quilt” can refer to several different projects, not one standard pattern. Choose a specific design before buying fabric: the options here include a 43-inch-square Churn Dash wall hanging, a 68.5-by-76.5-inch throw, a 14.5-by-74.5-inch table runner and standalone candy cane blocks. Their construction and material lists are not interchangeable.
Compare the candy cane quilt options
| Pattern | Finished size | Construction | Color and use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Candy Cane Quilt by Darlene Zimmerman | 43 inches square | Sixteen Churn Dash blocks, sashing and three borders | Red-and-white wall hanging |
| Candy Cane throw by Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken | 68.5 by 76.5 inches | Alternating rows of red and white rectangles, joined in sections, with a white border | Throw; the page also shows a blue-and-cream version |
| Candy Cane Lane by Fig Tree & Company | 14.5 by 74.5 inches | Runner made from the pattern’s candy cane blocks | Table runner in red, green and cream |
| Riley Blake Designs, Day 8: 12 Days of Christmas with RBD | 12-inch finished block; 12.5 inches unfinished | Individual block using stitch-and-flip corners | Block-scale project |
| The Sewing Loft Candy Canes Quilt Block | 6-inch or 12-inch finished block | Individual block pattern | Block-scale project |
The listed sizes and construction refer to the named patterns; they are not a shared specification for every project called a candy cane quilt. The AllPeopleQuilt instructions do not use the same construction or dimensions as the throw or runner, and the block patterns are separate designs.

Choose a size and construction
For a wall hanging: the Churn Dash quilt
Darlene Zimmerman’s Candy Cane Quilt finishes at 43 inches square. It is built from sixteen Churn Dash blocks, each finishing at 7.5 inches. In each block, triangle-square units combine red checks and white prints; pieced rectangle units use red and white fabric, and a white square forms the center. These parts are arranged in three rows. The blocks are joined with sashing, then framed with inner, striped middle and outer borders.
This is the most structured of the three full-size projects described here: its design depends on repeated pieced blocks and framed borders rather than long rows of alternating rectangles. Zimmerman’s instructions list 190 inches of 2.5-inch-wide bias binding strips. The quilt is layered, basted, quilted and bound. The published sample combines machine stitching in the ditch alongside the sashing, hand quilting near block seams and machine quilting in the border; those are sample choices, not required methods.

For a throw: repeated strip-pieced rows
Jo Kramer and Kelli Hanken’s Candy Cane finishes at 68.5 by 76.5 inches. Its center is assembled from alternating rows of red and white rectangles measuring 2.5 by 4.5 inches, with 2.5-inch squares at the ends of selected rows. The pattern has you assemble rows into sections, join eight sections and add a white border. It allows 2.5-inch precut strips for part of the cutting work.
The page also presents a blue-and-cream version, so the candy-cane arrangement is not limited to a red-and-white palette. The publisher describes the red-and-white palette as suitable beyond the Christmas season; how well that suits your home is a matter of taste.

For a table: Candy Cane Lane
Fig Tree & Company’s Candy Cane Lane is a 14.5-by-74.5-inch runner. Its material list includes red stripe, green stripe, small red print, small cream print and ivory solid background, as well as backing and binding. The vendor says the listed materials cover either the runner or one of its alternate block-based projects; making all three requires additional fabric. The vendor’s blog offers guidance for adapting the block for a table topper and placemats.
For a small project or a building block
Riley Blake Designs’ 2025 Day 8: 12 Days of Christmas with RBD PDF includes a 12-inch finished candy cane block. It demonstrates replacing a corner with a stitch-and-flip piece: place the fabrics right sides together, mark a diagonal guide, sew on the line, trim outside the seam to 1/4 inch, flip the corner open and press. The resulting block measures 12.5 inches before joining into a quilt.

The Sewing Loft’s downloadable Candy Canes Quilt Block is a different design, offered in 6-inch and 12-inch finished sizes. A standalone block can be used as a component in a larger project, but its dimensions and instructions should not be mistaken for those of the Churn Dash wall hanging or the Riley Blake block.
Plan fabric for the pattern you selected
Buy against the chosen pattern’s own cutting and material list. The amounts below belong to the named projects only. For the two AllPeopleQuilt patterns, the listed yardage and cutting assume 42 inches of usable fabric width, and measurements include 1/4-inch seam allowances.

- Instructions and template only
- Finished size 18 in x 24 in
Materials for the 43-inch wall hanging
- 3/8 yard each of large and small red checks
- Eight 1/8-yard cuts of assorted white prints
- 1/2 yard small red polka dot
- 1 yard red-and-white stripe
- 1 1/3 yards large red polka dot
- 2 3/4 yards backing
- One 49-inch-square piece of batting
- 190 inches of 2.5-inch-wide bias binding strips
These quantities are for Zimmerman’s 43-inch-square wall hanging pattern.
Materials for the 68.5-by-76.5-inch throw
- For the center, 35 red and 35 white precut strips, each 2.5 by 42 inches, or 2.5 yards of each solid color
- 2/3 yard solid white for borders
- 2/3 yard solid red for binding
- 4 3/4 yards backing
- One 77-by-85-inch piece of batting
These are the listed amounts for Kramer and Hanken’s throw pattern, not for the smaller wall hanging or runner. The pattern also notes that a scrappy version could use 592 different fabrics—560 rectangles and 32 squares—as an optional variation, rather than a required supply list.

Materials for the runner
Use the Candy Cane Lane material list for its specified striped, printed and ivory background fabrics, backing and binding. Its vendor distinguishes the fabric needed for the runner or one alternate block-based project from the larger amount needed to make all three projects.

The pattern sources do not provide a consistent difficulty scale across these projects, so there is no evidence-based way to rank them as objectively easiest. Instead, choose by the work you want to do:

For fabric shopping, quilting cotton is a suitable product category for these cotton-patchwork projects, but match colors, prints and usable widths to the selected pattern. Follow that pattern’s exact cutting dimensions and quantities rather than combining lists from different designs.
