For raw-edge machine appliqué, fuse each fabric shape to its background with paper-backed fusible web, then stitch around the edge to secure it. Choose the stitch for the finish you want: a straight stitch outlines the shape, while satin or blanket stitching can cover or frame the raw edge. Test the stitch and pivot technique on fabric scraps before sewing the finished piece.

What you need for raw-edge fusible appliqué

  • Appliqué fabric and a background fabric.
  • Paper-backed fusible web. It holds shapes in position before stitching begins, as described by Annie’s Attic and New Mexico State University Extension.
  • A conventional sewing machine with a stitch suitable for outlining or finishing the edges.
  • Optional stabilizer if the fabric needs support or dense stitching causes puckering.

How to machine appliqué with fusible web

  1. Trace the motif. Trace it onto the paper side of the fusible web. Reverse directional designs before tracing so they face the intended way when applied; this is recommended in the Annie’s Attic guide.
  2. Fuse and cut the shapes. Follow the fusible web manufacturer’s instructions for pressing, then cut out each shape. Heat settings and pressing times depend on the product, so use its label rather than a general setting.
  3. Position and fuse. Place the shapes on the background fabric and fuse them in place according to the product instructions. The web helps keep pieces from shifting as you begin to sew.
  4. Select a stitch and make a sample. Try your chosen stitch on scraps made from the same fabric layers. Check how it covers the edge and whether the layers pucker before working on the project.
  5. Sew around the motif. Keep the stitch consistently placed against the shape’s edge. For a satin finish intended to enclose the raw edge, position the stitch so it straddles that edge, as Singer explains in its satin-stitch-foot guide.

Which stitch should you use?

The right stitch depends on how much of the raw edge you want to cover and how prominent you want the border to look. These options are described in the Annie’s Attic guide, the Singer guide, and NMSU Extension’s appliqué guidance.

Stitch Edge coverage and appearance Considerations
Blanket or buttonhole stitch A visible, relatively open edge finish. Keep the stitch close enough to the appliqué edge to catch it.
Satin stitch A denser, more complete border that can cover the raw edge. Dense stitching can tunnel or pucker fabric; consider stabilizer if the fabric needs support.
Straight stitch A simple outline that secures the motif but does not cover the raw edge like satin stitching. Use it when an outlined edge suits the design.
Zigzag or another decorative stitch An alternative way to finish or decorate the edge. Check the stitch on a scrap to see how it behaves with your fabric layers.

No single stitch width or length suits every fabric and design. Adjust the machine according to the result you want, and judge the sample for edge coverage, appearance, and fabric handling.

How to sew corners and curves

Slow down as you approach a corner. Stop at the turning point with the needle down, raise the presser foot, pivot the fabric, lower the foot, and continue along the next edge. This pivot approach is described by Annie’s Attic and Singer.

On curves and tight corners, the best place to pivot depends on the motif and stitch. Practice on a scrap first so you can see how the machine’s stitch forms as the fabric turns.

When to use stabilizer—and how to handle puckering

Stabilizer under the background fabric can support the stitching and help reduce puckering or bunching. It is especially useful when stitching densely, working with thin or unstable fabric, or when a test sample puckers. Annie’s Attic recommends light- to medium-weight support depending on the fabric; Singer calls for tear-away stabilizer in the satin-stitch appliqué workflow described in its guide. NMSU Extension also notes that stabilizer helps prevent puckering or bunching.

How to keep fused appliqué from feeling too stiff

Fusible web adds adhesive across the shape and can make the finished area feel stiffer. One approach described by Annie’s Attic is to cut away some of the web from the center while leaving an adhesive border to hold the shape. How much to remove—and whether this suits the design and fusible product—varies. Preserve enough adhesive to secure the fabric, and follow the product instructions.

Machine appliqué versus embroidery-machine appliqué

This method uses a conventional sewing machine to stitch around a shape already fused to the background. Embroidery-machine appliqué has a different placement and tack-down workflow; specialist guidance also identifies curved-tip or duckbill appliqué scissors as tools for trimming fabric close to tack-down stitches in that narrower workflow. They are not required for every machine-appliqué project.
