Tips for Making Bargello Quilts: Plan the Strips, Preserve the Pattern

Bargello’s flowing design comes from straight strip piecing and planned shifts in fabric placement. Choose a pattern first, record its color order, and keep cut bands in sequence.

Bargello quilts get their flowing, wave-like look from straight strips arranged in a carefully planned order—not from curved piecing. For a first project, choose a pattern before buying fabric, map and label its color sequence, and follow its own strip widths and assembly diagrams. There is no single Bargello cutting plan that fits every design.

How Bargello piecing creates a flowing design

A common Bargello method starts by sewing fabric strips side by side into a strip set. The set may be joined into a tube, cut across into bands, and opened at selected seams so the patches shift position when the bands are sewn into rows. That deliberate change in placement produces the appearance of waves or curves while the actual seams remain straight. The exact sequence varies by pattern; Missouri Star’s Bargello tutorial and AllPeopleQuilt’s wall-quilt example illustrate versions of this approach.

2.5" Fabric Strip Roll - 100% Cotton Quilting Strip (Rouge Palette)
  • PREMIUM COTTON: Crafted from 100% high-quality quilting cotton, celebrated for its "cotton that feels like silk" hand. This fabric offers superior durability, minimal shrinkage, and holds a crease perfectly for crisp, flat pressing.
  • PRECISION PRE-CUT 2.5" STRIPS: Skip the tedious cutting and start sewing immediately. These professionally cut 2.5-inch wide strips ensure accuracy for your quilt blocks, saving you hours of prep time and reducing fabric waste.
  • PERFECT FOR STRIP PIECING & BINDING: The ideal format for popular precut-friendly quilt patterns, Log Cabin blocks, Rail Fence quilts, and braided fabric rugs. These strips are also a massive time-saver for creating long, continuous binding for your finished projects.
  • PROFESSIONALLY CURATED PALETTE: Each roll features a harmonious color story designed by experts. The shades blend effortlessly, ensuring high contrast and visual depth for your projects without the stress of trying to match bolts of fabric yourself.
  • EASY CARE & COLORFAST: High-quality dyes ensure the vibrant colors remain true wash after wash. Machine wash cold with like colors and tumble dry low; the fabric maintains its structure and softness, making it suitable for heirloom quilts and daily-use items.

Choose a pattern before choosing fabric

Start with the finished size you want, then check the selected pattern’s fabric count, yardage, strip widths, and cutting instructions. A 2.5-inch jelly roll is useful when a pattern calls for precut strips of that width; it is not a universal Bargello requirement. Do not combine one pattern’s fabric list with another pattern’s cutting plan.

Example Fabric and dimensions Construction notes
Missouri Star tutorial One roll of 2.5-inch strips, 3/4 yard of background fabric, 3/4 yard of outer-border fabric, and 3-1/4 yards of backing; featured quilt is 50 by 61 inches. The page does not state a publication date. Its fabric quantities and method belong to this tutorial; use its own instructions if following it.
AllPeopleQuilt wall quilt 24 assorted strips measuring 2.5 by 42 inches; finished quilt is 40-1/2 by 26 inches. Published in 2013. Joins strips into tubes, cuts variable-width bands, and assembles 16 rows.

These examples are not interchangeable supply lists: one describes a larger quilt using a strip roll and additional yardage, while the other is a smaller wall quilt with a specified set of 24 strips. Compare finished size, fabric count and yardage, strip widths, sequence complexity, and whether the instructions assume precuts or yardage. Buy only after confirming the chosen pattern’s complete list.

Plan the color sequence before sewing

Fabric order and value transitions shape the finished movement. A gradual light-to-dark progression can blend into a wave; contrasting color groups can make foreground and background areas read more distinctly. Before stitching, lay every strip out in the pattern’s sequence on a large flat surface or design wall.

  • Make a chart of the strip order, or number the fabrics and attach labels before moving them.
  • Keep the chart beside the machine and mark each strip set or band if the pattern creates multiple units.
  • Photographing the arranged strips can provide a quick reference if the layout must be cleared.

AllPeopleQuilt’s example specifically uses a placement chart and numbered fabrics. These simple records reduce the chance of reversing a strip or losing the intended progression during assembly.

Piece and press strip sets consistently

Use the seam allowance, stitch length, and pressing directions specified by your pattern. In AllPeopleQuilt’s example, the instructions call for a consistent 1/4-inch seam allowance and recommend alternating sewing direction as each new strip is added, helping limit a strip set’s tendency to bow. The example also presses duplicate sets in opposite directions so seams can abut during assembly. Treat these as instructions for that pattern, not as replacements for another pattern’s guidance.

  • Check the order and orientation of the strips before sewing each seam.
  • Keep seam allowances consistent so bands remain a dependable width for cutting and joining.
  • Press as directed rather than deciding on a direction midway through the project; the pattern’s pressing plan may be designed to make later joins easier.

Cut bands and assemble rows without losing order

When a pattern uses the tube method, the joined strip set is sewn into a loop before it is cut into bands. Selected seams are then unpicked to open each band at the planned position. A misplaced cut or opened seam changes the color sequence, so keep bands in their original order and consult the pattern diagrams as you work.

  1. Confirm the tube’s orientation and the pattern’s cutting widths before making the first cut.
  2. Cut the bands in sequence, stacking or labeling them so their order remains clear.
  3. Unpick only the seams the pattern identifies, opening each band at the intended point.
  4. Arrange the bands according to the row sequence and verify the layout against your chart before joining them.
  5. Sew the rows together using the pressing and alignment directions in the selected pattern.

Gather practical tools, not unnecessary specialty equipment

A rotary cutter, cutting mat, ruler, pins, seam ripper, iron, and pressing surface are useful for many Bargello projects. C&T Publishing’s project supplies also list scissors, measuring tape, a marking pencil, and clear tape for a fabric chart. Choose tools that suit your pattern and workspace; the list is a set of practical options, not a requirement to buy a specialized Bargello kit.

Where to learn more or draft a design

For a structured learning resource, C&T Publishing’s Bargello – Quilts in Motion by Ruth Ann Berry is listed as a 64-page book with eight projects and guidance for drafting an original design; the publisher page gives ISBN 9781607058106 and a 2014 publication date. For digital design, Electric Quilt’s EQ7 guide explains a software-specific workflow: set up strips, vary their widths, and color patches into curving diagonals. That is one way to plan a design, not the only way to make one.
