For accurate log cabin blocks, sew outward from the center in the numbered order shown by your pattern, check your quarter-inch seam before starting, and press each new strip without dragging the iron. Clear contrast between the block’s light and dark sections helps the design read; pinning later strips can help keep the block square.
Follow the pattern’s strip order
Log cabin blocks grow from a center square as strips, often called logs, are added around it. Follow the numbered sequence and diagram in your chosen pattern. Some examples add strips clockwise, but that is not a universal rule: the pattern’s directions determine the order and placement.
Before sewing, sort the pre-cut strips by size and keep them in the order you will use them. This makes it easier to pick the right piece for each step. AllPeopleQuilt’s Option 1 and Option 2 illustrate pattern-specific construction and pressing directions.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A seam allowance that is slightly too wide or narrow can compound as strips are added, changing the block’s dimensions or pulling it out of square. AllPeopleQuilt recommends this simple test before beginning:
#1 Best Overall
- Cut three strips, each 1.5 inches wide.
- Sew them together using the seam allowance you plan to use for the block.
- Measure the center strip. It should finish at exactly 1 inch wide.
- If it does not, adjust your seam and repeat the test before sewing the block.
A quarter-inch presser foot can help guide the fabric, if it is compatible with your machine. A homemade guide made from layered masking tape or moleskin is another option. Neither is essential for every machine; the test seam tells you whether your setup is producing the intended result.
Press after each strip
Press each seam after adding a strip, following the direction specified in your pattern. Directions vary: seams may be pressed away from the center, toward the newly added piece, or toward the darker fabric when the pattern leaves the choice open. Use the pattern’s diagrams rather than assuming one direction suits every block.

Lift and lower the iron to press instead of dragging it across the fabric. Pulling can stretch or warp longer strips. For a pattern-specific example, see the pressing directions in AllPeopleQuilt’s Light and Dark Log Cabin Quilt.

Choose contrast and plan the block layout
In a traditional light-and-dark arrangement, the logs on opposite sides of the block need enough difference in value or appearance for the diagonal division to show. Choose fabric combinations that make that contrast visible; there is no single color pairing that works for every design.

Block orientation also affects the finished pattern. When joining blocks, use the quilt’s assembly diagram to rotate them into the intended arrangement. The Light and Dark Log Cabin Quilt pattern shows how block rotation contributes to the overall setting.
Keep later strips from shifting
As the block grows, longer pieces can be harder to keep aligned. Pin the later strips before sewing if the fabric shifts, and check that the edges meet evenly. A walking foot may help if layers feed unevenly, provided it fits your machine; it is a conditional aid, not a requirement.

- Used Book in Good Condition
If accurate seams and right angles remain difficult despite checking the seam allowance and stabilizing the pieces, consider foundation piecing. It is an alternative to standard strip piecing that can help maintain consistent seams and square corners. Follow a pattern written for the method you choose, since its construction steps differ.

- The block is getting too large or too small: repeat the three-strip test and adjust the seam allowance until the center strip measures 1 inch.
- Long strips look stretched or wavy: press by lifting the iron rather than sliding it across the fabric.
- Pieces shift while sewing: pin the later strips and check that the layers are feeding evenly.
- The light-dark division is hard to see: select fabrics with a clearer difference in value or appearance.
- The final design does not match the pattern: check the numbered sequence, pressing directions, and block rotations against the pattern diagrams.
