For knitting or crochet, the most reliable way to work with wool is to check the yarn and pattern, make a gauge swatch, wash and dry that swatch as you plan to care for the finished piece, and only then settle on your needle or hook size. Wool care is not one-size-fits-all: follow the yarn or garment label before washing.
Start with the yarn and pattern
Before casting on or crocheting, compare the pattern’s recommended yarn weight and gauge with the yarn band. A substitution can change both the fabric and its dimensions, even when the yarn seems similar. Check the yarn’s care instructions too; they will help you decide how to treat the swatch and finished project.
#1 Best Overall
- Content: 100% Extraordinarily Luxurious Merino wool
- Specification: 82yd / 75 m ( 1.76 oz / 50 g ), Needle Size: 6mm, 1 ball * 50g, #4 Medium Worsted Weight Yarn.
- Excellent Sourcing: Merino wool is a material derived from Merino sheep and is known for its outstanding characteristics including its excellent softness, gloss and breathability. Merino wool yarn is softer, thinner and warmer than many others.
- Not easy to break: Under normal circumstances, don't worry that the yarn will break easily with 3-PLY so that your creative process becomes smoother.
- Care Instructions: Hand wash; cold max 30°C / 86F; No bleach product may be used; A machine dryer may not be used; Lay out horizontally for drying.
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows worked over a given measurement. It reflects your tension as well as the yarn and tool you use. For a size-sensitive project, matching the pattern’s gauge matters: a different stitch count can make the finished piece larger or smaller than intended.
Make a swatch that represents the project
- Use the yarn, needle or hook, and stitch pattern specified for the project. A swatch in a different stitch may not represent the fabric you will make.
- Work a sample large enough to measure a central area, away from the edges. Follow the pattern’s swatch instructions when provided.
- Wash and dry the sample using the care method you expect to use for the finished item. Handle wet fabric gently, then lay it flat to dry.
- Measure the dry, relaxed swatch and compare its stitches and rows with the pattern gauge.
If you have more stitches per inch than the pattern calls for, your fabric is tighter; try a larger needle or hook. If you have fewer stitches per inch, try a smaller one. Make and measure another swatch after changing tools. Do not choose by stitch count alone if the resulting fabric’s drape or feel is unsuitable for the project.

Block without stretching the work out of shape
Blocking means arranging a finished piece—or a swatch—into its intended shape and letting it dry. It is not a reason to force the fabric to a measurement. Lay the work on a clean, flat surface and shape it gently according to the pattern and the kind of fabric. Lace or another deliberately shaped fabric may need more careful shaping than a simple knit.
Wet wool can distort if pulled or handled roughly. Remove excess water without wringing or tugging, then arrange the piece flat. A blocking mat and pins can help hold a shape when needed, but basic flat shaping does not require special equipment.

Wash wool according to its care claim
Wool items do not all have the same washing instructions. Check the sewn-in label on a garment or the yarn’s care information for a handmade project. Some wool is labeled machine washable; other items may require hand washing or dry cleaning. Do not apply general wool-washing advice against a specific care label.
For wool labeled machine washable
The Woolmark Company advises washing machine-washable wool on the wool setting, which it describes as usually using gentle action at 40°C. If the machine has no wool cycle, its guidance suggests a cold or delicates setting. The item’s own care label remains the deciding instruction. Dry knits flat unless the care claim permits tumble drying.

For wool labeled hand-wash
Woolmark’s hand-washing guidance says to turn the garment inside out and soak it for about 10 minutes in clean lukewarm water with mild detergent. Rinse thoroughly, first in lukewarm water and then in cold water. Handle the wet item gently and avoid pulling or wringing it out of shape.
Choose a suitable detergent
Woolmark recommends a mild, relatively neutral-pH detergent for wool. It advises against heavy-duty detergents, enzyme-containing “bio” detergents, and bleach. If using powdered detergent, dissolve it before adding it to the wash. Follow any more specific product or garment instructions.

Understand why wool can felt or shrink
Untreated wool fibers have surface scales. Woolmark explains that heat and moisture combined with mechanical agitation can cause those scales to interlock, leading to felting and shrinkage. Shrink-resist treatments, often described as “Superwash,” alter that behavior. Treatment affects care, so use the label rather than assuming all wool yarn can be washed alike.
Air and store wool thoughtfully
To refresh a garment between washes, Woolmark recommends airing it flat. Fold knitted garments rather than hanging them; woven garments can be hung on shaped or padded hangers. Dry wet wool away from direct heat and sunlight.
For long-term storage, clean wool garments first and keep them in an airtight bag or container. Woolmark notes that food stains and body oils can attract moths, making cleaning before storage worthwhile.
Choose yarn for the fabric and care you want
For a project, consider three practical questions: does the yarn work to the pattern’s gauge, does the washed and blocked fabric have the dimensions and drape you want, and are you willing to follow its care requirements? A swatch can answer the first two before you commit to the whole piece; the yarn’s care information helps answer the third.
The available guidance does not establish a universal ranking of wool types for softness, durability, price, or environmental impact. Make the choice around the project, the swatched fabric, and the care instructions rather than assuming one wool is best for every use.
