The best tablet for handwritten notes depends on what you mean by “tablet.” For a full-featured device that can handle notes, sketches, PDFs, research, and creative apps, choose the 11-inch Apple iPad Air with M4. For a lower-cost Android setup with a pen included, choose the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE. If writing feel and distraction-free work matter more than apps, the reMarkable Paper Pro is the better choice. A fast processor and high-resolution screen do not automatically make a tablet good for writing. The important factors are how the pen behaves, how easily notes can be organized, and whether the device fits the rest of your workflow.

- Pen latency: Ink should appear immediately beneath the stylus. Claims such as “lowest latency” are not meaningful without comparable testing, so treat writing feel as a qualitative judgment.
- Palm rejection: The screen should ignore your hand while you write. This matters particularly for long lectures, meeting notes, and drawing.
- Pressure and tilt: Pressure sensitivity is useful for expressive lettering, shading, and illustration. Tilt support helps with calligraphic strokes and drawing.
- Surface friction: Glass lets a pen glide quickly; textured surfaces feel closer to paper. Texture can also reduce the smoothness, brightness, or color impact of a display.
- Screen size: An 10- or 11-inch tablet is portable. A 12- or 13-inch screen is better for PDFs, split-screen notes, sheet music, and large diagrams.
- Display type: LCD and OLED screens are better for color, video, and responsive apps. E Ink is lower-glare and more paper-like, but it refreshes more slowly and supports fewer tasks.
- Software: Check for templates, folders, tags, search, handwriting conversion, audio features, PDF markup, export formats, and cloud synchronization.
- File compatibility: Students and professionals may need reliable support for PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and email attachments.
- Total cost: Include the pen, case, keyboard, replacement nibs, and any cloud or AI subscription.
- Distraction and privacy: A full app store is useful but can undermine a paper-replacement workflow. Sync and handwriting conversion may require an account or subscription.
1. Apple iPad Air 11-inch with M4: best overall
Best for: students, professionals, artists, and anyone who wants handwritten notes without giving up a conventional tablet.
The iPad Air M4 is the safest all-round recommendation because it combines responsive pen input with a mature app ecosystem. It can handle lectures, meetings, digital planners, PDF markup, diagrams, drawing, browsing, video calls, entertainment, and multitasking. Note-taking apps include Apple Notes, Goodnotes, Notability, OneNote, and Nebo.

Writing and art experience
Apple Pencil Pro supports pressure sensitivity, hover, squeeze, barrel roll, haptic feedback, magnetic pairing, and charging on compatible iPad models. That makes the iPad Air especially versatile for handwriting, diagrams, sketching, and painting-related work. However, its standard glass display feels less like paper than the textured surface of a reMarkable. A matte or paper-texture screen protector can add resistance, though it may affect clarity and pen-tip smoothness.
11-inch or 13-inch?
Choose the 11-inch model for portability. Choose the 13-inch model if you regularly annotate technical PDFs, use split-screen notes, draw large diagrams, read sheet music, or want a more practical laptop substitute.
Limitations
- The Pencil is not included.
- Serious note-takers may prefer a paid third-party app over Apple Notes.
- iPadOS file handling is less computer-like than Windows.
- A keyboard, case, and Pencil can substantially increase the final cost.
Buy it if: you want one device for notes, art, documents, research, and entertainment. Skip it if: you want a distraction-free notebook or an included pen at the lowest possible price.
The iPad Pro is worth considering for a premium OLED display or demanding professional creative work, but ordinary handwritten notes do not usually justify the upgrade from the Air.

2. Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE: best Android and value option
Best for: Android users, Samsung phone owners, students, and buyers who want a capable pen-included package.
The Galaxy Tab S10 FE is compelling because the S Pen is generally included, unlike the Apple Pencil with the iPad Air. Samsung Notes supports handwriting, PDF annotation, handwriting conversion, synchronization, and productivity features. Android split-screen tools and Samsung DeX can also make it useful for research and multitasking.
Samsung’s U.S. MSRP information lists the 8GB/128GB Wi-Fi model at $499.99 and the 12GB/256GB model at $569.99. The larger S10 FE+ starts at $649.99 in the same pricing information. Check the official product page and the exact retailer SKU to confirm storage and pen contents.

- The S Pen generally comes in the package.
- Samsung Notes is ready to use.
- MicroSD expansion can be useful for documents and media.
- DeX and Android multitasking suit keyboard-based productivity.
- Integration with Galaxy phones is convenient.
Limitations
The LCD is less premium than the OLED panels on higher-end Galaxy Tab models, and Android tablet-app optimization is less consistent than iPadOS. Samsung Notes is excellent within Samsung’s ecosystem, but users working across many platforms may prefer OneNote or a cross-platform app.
Buy it if: you want strong everyday handwriting at a lower complete cost and already use Android or Samsung devices. Skip it if: you need the broadest specialist drawing and note-taking app selection or a premium display.
The Galaxy Tab S11 is the premium Android upgrade. Samsung’s June 2026 MSRP information lists the 12GB/256GB Wi-Fi model from $859.99 and the S11 Ultra from $1,199.99. It makes more sense for buyers who need a premium display, larger writing area, or heavier multitasking; the S10 FE remains the better value pick for notes.
3. reMarkable Paper Pro: best distraction-free writing experience
Best for: writers, executives, meeting-heavy professionals, readers, and anyone who wants digital paper rather than a general-purpose tablet.

The reMarkable Paper Pro is a dedicated digital notebook. Its 11.8-inch color E Ink display, adjustable reading light, textured surface, and manufacturer-specified less-than-1-millimeter pen-to-ink distance are designed around handwriting. The official product page lists it from $629 with a Marker included; a Marker Plus bundle is listed at $679. It also advertises a 50-day risk-free trial.
Writing, folders, tags, PDF annotation, color highlighting, document export, and connected desktop and mobile apps make it much more capable than paper while remaining intentionally limited. It is particularly good for brainstorming, mind maps, planning, meeting notes, and reading documents without notifications.
Subscription and connected features
Separate the hardware from the connected ecosystem. Core writing and document functions are not the same as cloud synchronization, handwriting search, handwriting-to-text conversion, document conversion, and AI-powered features. reMarkable describes these functions through its Connect ecosystem, so check the current Connect terms before buying. Do not assume every advanced feature is permanently included.
Limitations
- It is not a replacement for an iPad, Android tablet, or Windows computer.
- Color E Ink is slower and less vivid than LCD or OLED.
- Premium Book Folio and Type Folio accessories increase the cost.
- The Paper Pro Marker is not compatible with reMarkable 2.
The company’s battery estimate assumes roughly two hours of writing per day, five days per week, and varies with reading-light brightness. Treat it as a usage-dependent estimate rather than a universal result.
Left-handed users can select a left-handed mode during setup and switch between left- and right-handed settings. Buy it if: writing feel and focus matter more than app flexibility. Skip it if: you need browsing, streaming, advanced drawing software, or a laptop replacement.
4. Amazon Kindle Scribe: best for reading and occasional notes
Best for: Kindle readers who want to annotate books and documents, journal, and keep basic handwritten notebooks.
The Kindle Scribe is best understood as a Kindle reader with writing capabilities—not as a cheaper reMarkable or iPad. Current comparison coverage places it around a 10.2-inch, 300-ppi E Ink display, with a pen generally included and entry pricing around $399.99. Exact price depends on storage, pen bundle, promotions, and model, so check the current U.S. Amazon listing.

E Ink is comfortable for long reading sessions, works better in bright sunlight than a conventional glossy tablet, and is less distracting than iPadOS or Android. Kindle integration is its decisive advantage: the workflow begins with books and reading material, then adds annotations and handwritten notes.

Limitations
- Note organization and export are less flexible than on iPad, Samsung, or reMarkable.
- The app ecosystem is limited.
- E Ink refresh is slower.
- It is poorly suited to color-rich diagrams, rapid sketching, animation, and general productivity.
Buy it if: reading is your primary activity and notes are secondary. Skip it if: you need complex mathematics, broad cloud workflows, advanced handwriting conversion, or a full tablet.

The Surface Pro 11 is a Windows computer that can also function as a handwritten notebook. It supports OneNote, Word, PDFs, business applications, external displays, traditional file management, and keyboard productivity. That makes it the strongest choice when compatibility with Windows software matters more than paper-like ergonomics.

Handwritten mathematics
Large screens, zooming, quick ink response, palm rejection, and easy PDF export matter more than display resolution. The iPad Air and Galaxy Tab S10 FE are safer choices than the Kindle Scribe for complex equations, diagrams, and long problem sets.
Color plus a paper-like display
The reMarkable Paper Pro is the most relevant compromise because it combines color E Ink with a reading light. Its colors are not equivalent to the brightness, saturation, or motion performance of LCD or OLED.

Do not assume every note device records synchronized audio. iPad apps and some third-party services can support audio workflows, but the exact app and subscription must be checked. The reMarkable product page emphasizes meeting-note and AI features; verify precise recording functionality before relying on it.
No subscription
Ask four separate questions: Can you write without a subscription? Can you back up notes? Can you convert handwriting? Can you edit notes across devices? The reMarkable Connect plan is the clearest subscription consideration. Hardware ownership and cloud, search, conversion, and AI access are separate issues.
Cellular connectivity
Apple lists the 11-inch iPad Air cellular model from $749 and the 13-inch cellular model from $949. Other models may have different cellular availability by country and configuration; confirm the exact SKU rather than assuming mobile data is supported.
