Common box (Buxus sempervirens) is a classic topiary plant because its small leaves and dense growth take a clean clip and hold formal shapes. Plant it in autumn or spring, start with a ball, cube or pyramid, and time pruning to your plant’s age and local growing season. Box blight and box tree caterpillar can make upkeep difficult, so inspect plants regularly and consider other shrubs if problems become hard to manage.

How do I grow boxwood?

Common box is an evergreen shrub with small, glossy leaves and compact growth. Those features let it form crisp geometric outlines. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) says box can grow in sun or shade, but its plant profile recommends well-drained soil and partial shade as the preferred conditions. In sunny, windy sites, foliage may scorch when the soil is dry, so do not treat sun and shade as interchangeable in every garden.

Planting in the ground

The RHS recommends planting in autumn or spring. Prepare a generous hole so the roots have room to spread, then water the plant in. Choose a site with well-drained soil; partial shade is a useful choice where strong sun and wind might dry the ground.

Growing box in a pot

Yes. Use a container at least 45 cm (18 in) in diameter and a loam-based compost, such as peat-free John Innes No. 3, following the RHS container guidance. Check moisture regularly: box can scorch in sun and strong winds if its soil dries out.

How do I make a topiary shape?

Topiary is the training and clipping of plants—usually evergreen shrubs or trees—into deliberate forms. Box and yew are traditional choices; holly, privet and Lonicera nitida are also listed by the RHS as suitable subjects.

Choose a manageable first form

A ball, cube or pyramid is a practical first project. Select a young plant with healthy, evenly distributed growth, including foliage near the base. You can clip by eye or use a template to guide the outline. Wire frames are helpful for more intricate designs, but they are not necessary for simple shapes. Some frames can be reused; others stay in place and disappear beneath the foliage.

Shape gradually

Use topiary shears or hedge-cutters to maintain the outline. A tightly knitted, mature shape takes time to develop; depending on the plant and the final size, that may take many years. For a standard or “lollipop” form, keep one upright shoot as the main stem, tie it to a cane or stake, and gradually remove competing shoots as the stem reaches the height you want.

For newly established topiary, the RHS also recommends applying organic mulch in spring. Keep it around the root area rather than piled against the plant’s stems.

When should I trim boxwood?

Seasonal timing varies with climate, so use the RHS calendar as UK guidance and adjust for local conditions. The key distinction is whether the plant is young or mature: young box can be clipped earlier to encourage branching, while mature box is usually shaped after its new growth has hardened.

Young plants

The RHS advises cutting young plants back by up to one-third in May to encourage bushier growth. Further trimming can be done between May and August as needed.

Mature plants

For mature box, the RHS recommends shaping in August, after new shoots have hardened off and growth has slowed. Trimming earlier can stimulate soft new growth that is more vulnerable to weather damage and disease. The RHS’s general topiary advice says many specimens are trimmed once or twice a year; vigorous species may need more frequent clipping.

How can I spot and reduce box problems?

Box blight

Box blight can leave bare patches, brown leaves and dieback. Inspect plants so damage is noticed early. To reduce the chance of carrying disease between garden areas, clean pruning tools with garden disinfectant or a mild bleach solution between areas, as the RHS advises.

Box tree caterpillar

Inspect box for caterpillars and feeding damage. The RHS describes the moth as a common resident, widely distributed across England and also present in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. Its published records rose from over 800 in 2015–2016 to over 3,000 in 2017 and more than 5,000 annually since 2018. These are RHS survey records, not estimates of prevalence or counts of affected plants, and they should not be read as current 2026 annual totals.

What can I use instead of boxwood?

If pests or disease make box impractical, compare alternatives against the shape you want and your garden’s conditions. The RHS names yew, holly, privet and Lonicera nitida as topiary subjects, but no alternative shares every attribute of box.

Yew is a traditional option: the RHS describes it as a classic topiary plant that clips neatly and regrows well when cut into old wood. Before choosing any substitute, consider local climate, soil drainage, desired form, how the plant responds to clipping, its growth rate and the pest or disease concerns relevant to your garden.
