This Triple Four-Patch version finishes at 6 inches square. It builds four small four-patch units from two narrow fabric strips, combines them with green squares into two larger units, then joins those with two more squares. The instructions below follow the version published by American Patchwork & Quilting Editors on January 6, 2014.
Fabric and cutting measurements
Choose contrasting white, green and dark-green prints. The pattern calls for scraps; it does not require a particular fabric brand.

The pattern specifies a 6-inch finished block. The 2-inch small-unit and 3½-inch intermediate-unit measurements below include seam allowances; they are not finished dimensions.
How to assemble the Triple Four-Patch
- Make the strip set. Sew the white and dark-green 1¼ × 12-inch strips together along one long edge. Press the seam allowance toward the dark-green strip.
- Cut eight segments. Cut the strip set across its width into eight segments, each 1¼ inches wide.
- Make four small four-patches. Sew the segments together in pairs, matching the white and dark-green squares so each pair forms a four-patch. Each small unit should measure 2 inches square, including seam allowances.
- Build two intermediate units. For each unit, arrange two small four-patches with two green 2-inch squares into rows, then sew the rows together. Press the intermediate seams toward the green 2-inch squares. Each unit should measure 3½ inches square, including seam allowances. Make two.
- Complete the block. For each half of the block, sew one intermediate unit to one green 3½-inch square. Join the two pairs to form the block, pressing the final seam allowance in one direction.
Check the unit layout before sewing
Keep the small four-patches oriented consistently as you arrange them beside the green squares. The two intermediate units should have the same layout so the block reads as a balanced, nested four-patch rather than a rotated or mismatched pair. The pattern provides diagrams and a downloadable project on its block pattern page.
