You can donate handmade pillowcases to local children’s hospitals, shelters, nursing homes, hospice centers, veteran services, and other charities—but call the specific location first. The One Million Pillowcase Challenge’s organizer reached its one-million goal in December 2020 and still encourages donations.
Where can you donate pillowcases?
American Patchwork & Quilting’s official suggestions span several kinds of local organizations. The list is a starting point, not confirmation that a particular branch accepts handmade pillowcases today. The organizer asks donors to contact the recipient before donating and check its restrictions and requirements. (Campaign overview; official donation suggestions.)
- Hospitals and care settings: children’s hospitals, pediatric surgery centers, oncology units, dialysis centers, hospice centers, nursing homes, and Shriners Hospitals.
- Shelters and housing organizations: homeless, youth, runaway, and women’s shelters; transitional residences; and YMCA or YWCA locations.
- Community and relief organizations: Amanda Cases of Love, Catholic Charities, Child Welfare Services, Church World Service, Lutheran Refugee Services, United Way, and the Red Cross.
- Other suggested recipients: Ronald McDonald House, Ryan’s Case for Smiles, Enchanted Makeovers, Operation Support for Deployed Military, missions, veteran clinics or hospitals, and people affected by fires, floods, hurricanes, or other disasters.
How to find a local recipient and confirm its requirements
Contact the local branch or the relevant hospital volunteer, community-giving, shelter, or community-services office. Ask whether it currently accepts handmade pillowcases, then confirm the details before sewing or delivering them. The official campaign guidance specifically advises checking acceptance and local restrictions; these questions help you get the recipient’s current instructions:

- Are handmade pillowcases being accepted now?
- What sizes and fabrics are allowed?
- Must items be new, washed, or packaged in a particular way?
- Where and when should donations be delivered?
If you are choosing between possible recipients, compare their current acceptance, delivery logistics, item specifications, and the people they serve. The campaign’s suggestions are not ranked.
What fabric should you use?
Ask the intended recipient before selecting fabric. The campaign FAQ says most of the charities its organizers contacted preferred 100% cotton, but the local recipient’s current preference should guide your choice. (Campaign overview and FAQ.)

Is the One Million Pillowcase Challenge still active?
American Patchwork & Quilting began the challenge in 2010. The organizer says the one-million goal was reached in December 2020, the campaign’s tenth year, and encourages people to keep donating because the need remains. Its overview displays a “Current Count” of 1,017,328 on a page marked updated April 24, 2024; that is the figure shown on that dated page, not a verified live total for October 2026. The organizer also invites participants to record their donations or email the number of pillowcases made. (Campaign overview.)
Where to find free pillowcase patterns
The campaign’s pattern collection offers free designs, including king-size and travel-size options. Its basic pattern uses 1 1/8 yards of two coordinating fabrics to make two pillowcases. The pattern resource was updated April 20, 2026. Check the recipient’s specifications before choosing a pattern or cutting fabric. (Official pattern collection.)
