Trollface is a grinning rage-comic character used to represent or signal internet trolling. Oakland artist Carlos Ramirez, who posted online as Whynne, created it for a comic poking fun at the pointlessness of trolling. Know Your Meme dates the comic’s first documented posting to DeviantArt to September 19, 2008.
Who created Trollface?
Carlos Ramirez, an Oakland artist who used the online name Whynne, drew Trollface. Know Your Meme dates the original MS Paint comic’s upload to DeviantArt to September 19, 2008. The comic was about trolling on 4chan’s /v/ video-games board and mocked the activity as pointless. Know Your Meme’s Trollface history provides the origin account and timeline.

How did Trollface spread?
In the months after its posting, the drawing circulated on 4chan as both an emblem of trolling and a character that could be reused in rage comics. It became popular with Redditors and rage-comic artists in the first half of 2009, then appeared in image posts on platforms including Tumblr, Reddit, and Facebook. For a time, some people called it “coolface.”
Its simple, recognizable expression made it easy to adapt: users could place the face into different scenarios to portray a troll, signal that a post was meant to provoke, or comment ironically on trolling. The character also returned in later meme formats, including the 2020 “Cover Yourself in Oil” trend, as documented by Know Your Meme.

What does Trollface mean?
At its most basic, Trollface communicates mischief, provocation, or a knowingly irritating joke. The original comic was critical of trolling, but the image’s later use is not limited to that original point: depending on the post, it can portray a troll, mark a joke as deliberately provocative, or simply reference an old internet meme.
Interpretation depends on the surrounding caption, imagery, and context—not the face alone. The Anti-Defamation League says that most Trollface memes are not racist or antisemitic and that the image by itself should not be taken as evidence of bigotry. A version paired with Nazi, racist, or antisemitic imagery or language is different: that surrounding material can make the post hateful. See the ADL’s guidance on racist versions of Trollface.

Was Trollface licensed or monetized?
Yes, there have been reported licensing and enforcement examples. Know Your Meme recounts that Ramirez issued a DMCA notice in 2015 concerning the Wii U game Meme Run, and reports licensing arrangements for the character. These examples do not establish whether a particular repost, remix, product listing, or later use is authorized.
In its account of a 2015 Kotaku interview, Know Your Meme reports Ramirez’s estimate that he had received more than $100,000 in licensing fees, settlements, and other payouts since registering the work in 2010, with peak monthly revenue estimated at $15,000. Those are the creator’s estimates as reported in that 2015 account, not independently audited totals. In March 2021, Know Your Meme also reported that Ramirez auctioned NFTs of Trollface and the original comic; that was a historical digital-art event, not evidence of a current offering. In September 2025, Know Your Meme reported a licensing deal between Ramirez and the team behind the $TROLL token. None of these reports determines the rights status of an unrelated current use.
