The Tulip Garden Quilt Block from AllPeopleQuilt finishes at 9 inches square and combines appliqué on a cream foundation with a distinctive angled join to a green print corner. Make the appliqué first, trim its foundation, then attach the corner piece. The tutorial was published by American Patchwork & Quilting Editors on January 22, 2014; its pattern and downloadable appliqué guidance are available from AllPeopleQuilt.

What you need for the block

Check your fabric stash before buying supplies. The pattern calls for these pieces and scraps:

  • One 10½-inch solid cream square for the foundation.
  • Solid blue, pink, and yellow scraps for the flowers.
  • Blue, pink, and yellow print scraps to coordinate with the solid flowers.
  • An 18-by-22-inch solid green fat quarter, plus green print scraps for the corner and a leaf.

The pattern uses a green 10-inch square to cut enough ⅝-inch-wide bias strips for three 5½-inch stems. It also calls for green templates A and A reversed; pattern B from each of the three solid flower colors; pattern C from each matching print; and one pattern D from green print. The publisher does not specify fiber content, so suitable quilting fabric is a practical supply choice, not a stated requirement.

Choose an appliqué method

The instructions do not require one particular hand or machine appliqué technique. Download the project pattern and read the included “All About Appliqué” guidance before preparing the pieces. Choose a method there, then follow the corresponding instructions for templates, cutting, and preparation. The tutorial’s own direction is: “Before beginning, read All About Appliqué in download.”

Appliqué the tulips on the cream foundation

  1. Prepare the pattern pieces according to the appliqué method you chose.
  2. Position the pieces on the 10½-inch cream square as shown in the project pattern.
  3. Stitch the appliqué pieces in place with matching thread, beginning with the stems.
  4. After the appliqué is complete, trim the foundation to 9½ inches square, including seam allowances.

Join the green corner piece

The angled corner is joined after the appliqué is finished. The placement marks and pinning order help align the sewing line where the two pieces meet.

  1. Place the corner cutting template where the stems end. Transfer its reference marks to the appliquéd block, then cut along the marked edge.
  2. Pin the appliquéd block to the green print corner piece. First align the middle of the sewing line, then align both endpoints.
  3. Fill in the remaining pins, matching the reference marks so the pieces lie smoothly, and sew the join.

Keep this block distinct from other tulip patterns

Several quilt patterns use tulips in their names, but they are not this AllPeopleQuilt block. These examples differ in size and construction:

Pattern Finished block size Construction and quilt scale
Tulip Garden Quilt Block (American Patchwork & Quilting Editors, 2014) 9 inches square Appliqué on a cream foundation, joined to a green print corner piece.
Tulip Bouquet (Penny Rose Studio / Riley Blake Designs, 2016) 14 inches Combines pieced squares with appliqué in an 82-by-82-inch quilt. See the separate Tulip Bouquet pattern.
Tiptoe Through the Tulips (Riley Blake Designs, 2019) 12 inches Tulips, stems, and leaves are appliquéd to background squares in a 58-by-70-inch quilt. See the separate Tiptoe Through the Tulips pattern.

Use the 9-inch finished size and the green-corner construction to identify the tutorial you need; the other two downloads are different projects, not alternate instructions for this block.
