Copper acetate crystals can form when copper is first oxidized and then reacts with acetic acid; slow evaporation of the resulting solution can encourage crystal growth. Published teaching sources describe several distinct approaches, but a penny patina demonstration is not the same as making crystals, and a crystal’s color does not verify its identity or purity.
How copper acetate forms
Metallic copper does not simply dissolve in weak vinegar as though it were already copper acetate. Copper must first be converted to an oxidized form. The University of Göttingen’s chemistry teaching procedure describes copper sheet exposed to vinegar essence, with green material developing over several days. A peer-reviewed 2012 paper describes additional microchemical and electrochemical routes, including formation of copper hydroxide or oxide intermediates before acetic acid is added.
These are documented educational procedures, not a single universal household recipe. Vinegar essence is not interchangeable with ordinary household vinegar, and the paper’s electrochemical method uses electrodes and a power source. Do not infer a fixed amount, yield, reaction time, or purity from these descriptions.

Crystal growth and identification
Slow evaporation is the main crystal-growth lever supported by the research. The authors of the 2012 paper report that slower solvent evaporation can produce larger crystals. That is not a promise of a particular size or a test of purity; results depend on the route and conditions.

- Use a documented procedure appropriate to your setting rather than improvising a vinegar-and-peroxide recipe.
- Allow the solution to cool where the procedure calls for it, and use a clean, compatible vessel for crystallization.
- Let solvent evaporate slowly and keep the vessel undisturbed and protected from contamination.
- Collect crystals only with suitable protective equipment and tools, following the procedure’s safety guidance.
- Label the material and treat it as a copper-containing chemical. Do not assume that appearance identifies its composition.
Copper acetate and related copper compounds can have different hues and compositions. The American Chemical Society’s ChemMatters article on verdigris explains that verdigris can refer to compositionally variable copper acetate compounds. A green, blue, or blue-green appearance is not a chemical assay and does not establish that a sample is pure copper(II) acetate.
Safety and disposal
Use appropriate eye protection, ventilation, and gloves, and follow the specific procedure’s safety directions. The American Chemical Society’s educational materials advise keeping materials away from food and avoiding direct contact; supervise educational demonstrations and wash hands afterward. The University of Göttingen teaching page identifies copper acetate monohydrate as harmful if swallowed, capable of causing serious eye damage, and very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

Keep solutions and crystals labeled and away from children, pets, food, and household equipment. Do not use cookware, food containers, or drinking vessels. Do not pour copper-containing liquids down a drain or onto soil; collect liquids and contaminated solids and follow local hazardous-waste instructions.

Can ordinary vinegar dissolve scrap copper into copper acetate?
The documented chemistry involves copper being oxidized first, or an oxidized copper intermediate being formed. The sources do not establish an improvised ordinary-vinegar recipe for directly turning scrap copper into a guaranteed crystal product.

Are penny patina crystals the same as copper acetate crystals?
The American Chemical Society penny activity produces a blue-green surface patina as the penny dries. It is a surface demonstration, not a method for making a bulk crop of crystals.
How can I encourage larger copper acetate crystals?
The 2012 peer-reviewed paper identifies slow solvent evaporation as a way to obtain larger crystals. Crystal size is not guaranteed, and size or appearance does not establish purity.

Does a blue-green color prove the crystals are copper acetate?
No. Verdigris can include copper acetate compounds with variable composition and hues. Color alone cannot identify a compound or confirm purity.
How should copper-containing leftovers be disposed of?
Collect the solution, crystals, and contaminated solids, and follow local hazardous-waste instructions. Do not pour them down a drain or onto soil.
