The safest place to start is Ubuntu Desktop’s built-in wallpaper collection: open Activities → Appearance, choose a supplied background, or select Add Picture… for an image from your computer. For more choice, use artwork documented by Ubuntu’s official community process, then choose a file whose resolution and aspect ratio match your display.
This guide covers official Ubuntu wallpapers, community and flavor artwork, free Ubuntu-themed images, 4K and ultrawide sizing, GNOME setup, terminal commands, cropping, licensing and common fixes. The Ubuntu Desktop instructions apply to the GNOME-based default desktop and were checked against the Ubuntu 26.04 LTS context available on September 8, 2026. Menu names can differ on older releases and Ubuntu flavors.
What counts as an Ubuntu wallpaper?
“Ubuntu wallpaper” can mean several different things:
- Official Ubuntu wallpaper: artwork shipped with an Ubuntu release or selected through Ubuntu’s documented community art process.
- Ubuntu-themed wallpaper: an independent design using Ubuntu colors, logos, mascots, Linux imagery or desktop screenshots. It is not automatically endorsed by Ubuntu.
- General free wallpaper for Ubuntu: any legally downloadable image that works as a desktop background.
- Historical Ubuntu wallpaper: artwork associated with an earlier release. Always identify the release rather than presenting it as current.
- Ubuntu flavor artwork: backgrounds associated with Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu MATE, Ubuntu Budgie, Ubuntu Studio and other official flavors.
An image appearing in an image search is not necessarily official, high resolution or licensed for redistribution. Treat the source and license as separate questions.

Best places to find free Ubuntu wallpapers
1. The wallpapers already installed
Ubuntu Desktop includes supplied backgrounds in the Appearance panel. This is the most reliable option because the files are distributed with the operating system and are already sized and tested for the desktop experience.
Ubuntu’s official help explains the workflow: choose a background in Appearance, use Add Picture…, or right-click an image in Files and choose Set as Background….
2. Ubuntu’s community wallpaper process
Ubuntu says it holds a community wallpaper competition before new releases, with selected entries potentially included in Ubuntu. This is the best official route for discovering release artwork beyond the files already installed. Start with Ubuntu’s art and design documentation, and check the specific release or project page for provenance and usage terms.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not assume that a repost on a file-sharing site is an official download. Prefer Ubuntu-hosted pages or a clearly documented project source.
3. Historical release artwork
Older Ubuntu backgrounds can be useful if you want a particular release theme or mascot. Label them by release—such as Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or Ubuntu 25.10—instead of calling an old image the current default. Release announcements and Ubuntu project repositories are more trustworthy than unattributed wallpaper packs.
4. Flavor artwork
Ubuntu flavors have their own visual identities. A Kubuntu, Xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE background may be excellent on Ubuntu Desktop, but it should be described as flavor artwork rather than a standard Ubuntu Desktop background. The settings path will also depend on the flavor’s desktop environment.

5. Independent free-image sources
General photography, illustration and abstract-art sources can provide excellent backgrounds for Ubuntu. Check the license for the actual image, not merely the website’s general copyright notice. “Free download” may allow personal use while restricting modification, commercial use or redistribution.

There is no objectively best wallpaper. A useful choice balances image quality, crop resilience, desktop readability, provenance and license clarity.
| Use case | Look for | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Official Ubuntu background | Artwork installed with Ubuntu or documented by Ubuntu | Check the release and any stated usage terms |
| Dark desktop | Dark or low-contrast imagery with a clear focal point | A dark interface does not guarantee that every third-party image has a dark variant |
| Minimalist and productivity | Large areas of low detail behind icons, panels and docks | A visually simple image can still look poor if it is too small |
| Nature and landscape | High-resolution scenes with the main subject near the center | Wide scenery may lose its sides on a conventional monitor |
| Abstract | Gradients, shapes and textures that tolerate cropping | Avoid tiny text or edge-dependent details |
| Ubuntu logo or mascot | Clearly sourced, high-resolution artwork | Logo and trademark use may have restrictions |
| Ultrawide | 21:9 or 32:9 artwork, or a crop-resistant panoramic image | A 16:9 image may remove important content at the sides |
| Dual monitor | A wide composition or separate images suited to each screen | Behavior varies with desktop environment and display arrangement |
| Portrait display | Tall artwork or a large square source | Landscape images can be heavily cropped |
For a practical “top” shortlist, prioritize images with no watermark, no visible compression, a clear license, enough pixels for your display and important content positioned near the center.
What resolution should an Ubuntu wallpaper be?
Download at least the display’s native resolution. A larger image gives the desktop more room to crop, but a matching native image can be preferable when it avoids unnecessary cropping.
| Display | Recommended minimum | Better target |
|---|---|---|
| 1366×768 laptop | 1366×768 | 1920×1080 |
| 1920×1080 display | 1920×1080 | 2560×1440 |
| 2560×1440 display | 2560×1440 | 3840×2160 |
| 4K display | 3840×2160 | 4096×2160 or larger |
| 5K display | 5120×2880 | 5120×2880 or larger |
| Ultrawide | Native monitor resolution | A larger image with the same aspect ratio |
| Portrait display | Native portrait resolution | A high-resolution portrait or square image |
GNOME’s design guidance recommends a 4096×4096-pixel source for broad coverage across high-resolution, ultrawide and portrait displays. That is a design-source recommendation, not a requirement for every user. A native 3840×2160 image may be the better choice for a 16:9 4K monitor.
Which file format is best?
- JPEG: usually the best balance for photographs and large scenic images.
- PNG: well suited to illustrations, flat colors, text and transparency, though files can be larger.
- WebP: efficient and usually suitable on current systems, but older tools and scripts may handle it less consistently.
- AVIF: efficient but less convenient for some desktop workflows.
- SVG: useful for vector artwork, although desktop support and rasterization can vary.
For maximum compatibility, choose a high-quality JPEG or PNG.

How to change the wallpaper in Ubuntu Desktop
- Open the Activities overview.
- Search for and open Appearance.
- Choose one of the supplied wallpapers, or select Add Picture….
- Pick an image from Pictures or another folder.
- Review it on the desktop; the change should apply immediately.
You can also open Files, right-click an image and choose Set as Background…. In Image Viewer, open the title-bar menu and choose the equivalent background option.
Light and dark variants
Ubuntu’s supplied wallpapers may include light and dark variants, shown as split thumbnails in Appearance. Choose a light image when it gives better contrast with dark interface elements, or a dark image for a lower-light desktop. Third-party files do not automatically gain a dark variant, so you may need to download or create one separately.
Set a wallpaper from the terminal
These commands are for GNOME-based Ubuntu Desktop installations. They are not universal Ubuntu commands.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why Ubuntu crops or scales wallpapers
GNOME normally preserves the image’s aspect ratio and uses a zoom-style presentation. The image fills the screen, so portions that do not fit are cropped. The center is the safest location for faces, logos, animals and other important content.
- A 16:9 image can lose content on an ultrawide display.
- A panoramic image can lose its sides on a 16:9 display.
- A portrait image can be severely cropped on a landscape screen.
- Text or logos near an edge may disappear.
- A correct aspect ratio cannot fix a source that is too low-resolution.
Choose an image with a central focal point, uncluttered space behind icons and no essential details close to the edges. If a mode such as scaled or centered is available, try it when filling the screen is less important than preserving the entire image. Stretching is usually the least attractive option because it can distort the artwork.
Ultrawide and multiple-monitor setups
Mirrored displays commonly show the same background on both screens. With extended displays, the desktop may use one image per display or span one image across the arrangement, depending on the desktop environment and settings.
Mixed resolutions can crop one monitor differently from another. A portrait monitor needs a composition that survives vertical framing, while a high-DPI screen beside a standard-DPI display may make sharpness and apparent sizing look different. GNOME includes a spanned rendering option, but identical multi-monitor behavior should not be assumed across GNOME, KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon and other Ubuntu flavors.

Fix blurry, missing or unavailable wallpapers
The wallpaper looks blurry
- Check the file dimensions. With ImageMagick installed, run
identify wallpaper.jpg. - Download the original file rather than a browser thumbnail.
- Use an image at least as large as the monitor’s native resolution.
- Avoid enlarging a small image or repeatedly recompressing it.
- Confirm that the monitor is running at the resolution you expect.
Important content is cropped
Use a source with the correct aspect ratio, choose an image with a centered subject, or reframe the image in an editor. A wider source helps on ultrawide displays; a taller or square source helps on portrait screens. No fit mode can preserve every edge while also filling a differently shaped display without distortion or cropping.
The image does not appear in Appearance
Copy it to ~/Pictures, use JPEG or PNG, confirm it opens in Image Viewer, and select it again through Appearance → Add Picture…. Also check that the image is not on a disconnected drive and that your account can read it. A symbolic link or network path can stop working after its target becomes unavailable.
The terminal command fails
Check whether the GNOME schema exists:
gsettings list-schemas | grep org.gnome.desktop.background
If it is absent, you may be using KDE Plasma, Xfce, Cinnamon or another desktop environment. Use that environment’s settings tool rather than forcing GNOME keys. An incorrect username, path, URI or filename can also cause failure.
Are Ubuntu wallpapers free to use?
Free to download does not necessarily mean free to redistribute, modify or use commercially. Before publishing an image in a wallpaper pack, using it in a product, removing attribution or incorporating it into a logo, check the license for that specific artwork.
Official Ubuntu branding and artwork should not automatically be treated as public domain. An independent Ubuntu-themed image may also contain trademarks or third-party material. Keep a record of the source and license when the use matters legally.
Should you use live wallpapers?
Static images are the simplest and safest default. Animated or video wallpapers can introduce additional CPU or GPU activity, battery use, suspend-and-resume problems, tearing and Wayland/X11 compatibility issues. Their behavior varies across desktop environments and tools, so they are outside the reliable core workflow for Ubuntu backgrounds.
Quick Recap
