The Uneven Nine-Patch & Star Quilt is a 44-1/2-inch-square wall hanging made from 33 uneven nine-patch blocks and three star blocks. Each block finishes at 6 inches; the pattern combines measured piecing, a six-row layout, blue-dot borders, quilting and binding.
Project size and fabric requirements
AllPeopleQuilt lists this wall hanging as inspired by “Seeing Stars” from designer Gerry Kimmel-Carr, with Laura Boehnke credited as quiltmaker. Its quilt center is 36-1/2 inches square, and the borders bring the finished piece to 44-1/2 inches square.

How the blocks are pieced
The pattern calls for 36 blocks in total: 33 uneven nine-patch blocks and three star blocks. Both block types should measure 6-1/2 inches square before they are joined, including seam allowances, so they finish at 6 inches square in the quilt.
#1 Best Overall
Uneven nine-patch blocks
For each block, cut four 2-3/4-inch squares from one fabric, four rectangles measuring 2-3/4 by 2 inches from another, and one 2-inch square from a third. Arrange and sew the pieces in three rows. Check that the completed block measures 6-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances.
Star blocks
For each star block, cut four 3-1/4-inch squares and cut each square diagonally twice to make eight triangles. Piece the triangles into four hourglass units, each measuring 2-1/2 inches square including seam allowances. Arrange those units with 2-1/2-inch squares in three rows to form the block, then check that it measures 6-1/2 inches square. Make three star blocks.

- Skill level: Easy
Arrange the quilt center and add borders
- Arrange all 36 blocks in six rows. Sew the blocks into rows, alternating the direction in which you press the seams between rows.
- Join the rows to make the quilt center. It should measure 36-1/2 inches square, including seam allowances.
- Cut four 4-1/2-by-42-inch strips from the blue-dot fabric. Use them to make two 4-1/2-by-36-1/2-inch borders and two 4-1/2-by-44-1/2-inch borders.
- Sew the shorter borders to opposite sides of the quilt center. Add the longer borders to the two remaining sides.
- Layer the top with the batting and backing, baste the layers, and quilt as desired. Bind the quilt with blue-dot strips.
Fabric choices and layout
The pattern specifies a mix of prints, solids, dots and stripes in six colors, leaving room to choose fabrics within that palette. When adapting the look, consider how strongly the fabrics contrast, whether print scale keeps the small pieced sections readable, and how color placement distinguishes stars from nine-patches. You can also decide where to distribute the three star blocks across the six rows. These are design choices; the pattern does not report tested comparisons of alternate palettes or layouts.

The repeated cuts and small units make accurate measuring important. Check the dimensions of the nine-patch blocks and hourglass units as you work, then verify that each finished block is 6-1/2 inches square before assembly. A rotary cutter, ruler and cutting mat may help with repeated measured cuts, though the pattern does not specify them as required tools.
