Uri Tuchman’s hand automaton is a mechanical sculpture: two wooden hands tap their fingers, driven by brass cams and levers. The movement suggests typing on an imaginary keyboard, while the visible mechanism makes the piece as much about how motion is made as about the playful gesture itself.
How does Uri Tuchman’s hand automaton work?
Reports describe brass cams and levers operating wooden, hand-sculpted fingers. As the mechanism moves them, the hands tap in a way that resembles someone typing, though there is no keyboard. The available descriptions do not provide a mechanism diagram or a complete technical walkthrough, so the precise sequence and arrangement of parts are not established.
The fingers presented a practical sculptural challenge: Laughing Squid reported that Tuchman shaped them from wood, then separated and reattached them in pieces so they could move. That detail captures the balance at the heart of the work: the hands must read as a convincing sculpted form while also allowing mechanical action.

Why does it read as both sculpture and mechanism?
The hands give the motion a familiar, almost purposeful appearance; the exposed cams and levers show that it is carefully staged. Make described the automaton as having no practical purpose beyond displaying how it works. Its appeal comes from that openness: viewers can attend to the crafted wooden forms and to the mechanism animating them, without the object needing to accomplish a task.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. Handcrafted Solid Wood Design: We refuse to use cheap laser-cut plywood. The manta ray body is hand-carved from natural solid Walnut, paired with a sturdy solid wood base. The beautiful two-tone wood grain is polished to a smooth, warm texture, making it a sophisticated collector's piece that adds a touch of luxury to any room.
- 2. Effortless Continuous Motion: Unlike manual models that need constant pushing, this sculpture features an automated mechanism powered via the included USB cable for uninterrupted flow. The manta ray glides through the "air" in a fluid, wave-like rhythm, creating a relaxing visual loop perfect for zoning out during a busy workday.
- 3. No Assembly Required – Ready to Display: We know your time is valuable. This kinetic sculpture arrives fully assembled. Simply unpack the eco-friendly box, set it up on your desk, and enjoy the mechanical beauty immediately. No confusing instructions, no tiny screws, no frustration.
- 4. A Unique Surprise for "The Man Who Has Everything": Looking for a gift that stands out? Whether for Father's Day, an anniversary, or a birthday, this mechanical masterpiece is a creative choice for men who appreciate engineering, nature, and craftsmanship. It comes in gift-ready packaging that conveys thoughtfulness.
- 5. Ideal Size for Any Space: Designed with perfect proportions to command attention without cluttering your workspace. It fits perfectly on a bookshelf, coffee table, or piano top, adding a touch of Japandi or Mid-Century Modern elegance to your home office or living room without taking up too much room.
This approach belongs to a long history of automata that bring mechanical movement into sculptural objects. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s examples include a clockwork figure and a writing machine, showing how automata have combined motion with forms such as sculpture, clocks, music, and writing. This is useful context for Tuchman’s piece, not evidence that those historical works directly influenced it.

The Awesomer reported in May 2023 that the hands formed part of a larger installation headed to the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. That report establishes a planned connection, not whether the installation was ultimately displayed there or where the automaton is now. The cited coverage does not establish its current location, dimensions, full materials list, build time, price, or sale status.
