A speed square can set and guide a diagonal line from a known reference point; compatible stair gauges can repeat a fixed rise-and-run layout without resetting the measurements for every mark. Neither tool finds an unknown angle or removes the need to measure and check the workpiece.
How a speed square guides one diagonal line
A speed square, also called a rafter square or layout square, is a triangular tool with reference scales and an angle scale. Swanson describes its functions as including a protractor and line scriber. Its scales and pivot support layout work such as roof, stair and trim cuts.

- Choose the reference. Identify the workpiece edge the line should start from, and measure or mark the line’s starting point. The square needs a known edge and point to register against.
- Set the angle. Use the square’s angle scale to position it for the angle you need, following the manufacturer’s guide for reading the scale.
- Guide the mark. Hold the square securely against the reference edge and draw along its appropriate edge from the measured point. Check that the line reaches the intended endpoint before cutting or proceeding.
This reduces the need to construct an angle by hand, but it does not determine what angle the job requires. Establish the dimensions and angle from the plan or workpiece first.

It allows for quick measurements, precise marking, and repeatable angle settings. Stair Gauges is ideal for stair layouts, rafter cutting and installation, and various woodworking projects.
- 【Anti-Slip Stair Gauges Knobs Tool】Our stair gauge set can prevent slipping and scratching when used on framing square. The copper clamp plate at the bottom of the stair gauges is equipped with a silicone pad, which helps maintain stability during use and prevents sliding while measuring and cutting, ensuring accuracy. Additionally, This stair gauges knobs tool design prevents scratches on the surface of the carpentry square, protecting the integrity and lifespan of the tool.
- 【Portable and Easy to Use Stair Gauges for speed square】The stair gauge for speed square feature a magnetic keychain design for easy carrying and access. Our stair gauges do not require twisting the knob; simply magnetically attach them directly for effortless operation, ensuring the tool is always within reach and reducing the risk of loss.
- 【Multi-Functional Stair Gauges for Circular Saw】This stair gauge is suitable for stair and framing layouts, and This stair gauge can also serve as a circular saw rip guides to enhance measurement and cutting efficiency. Equipped with framing square attachments, circular saw stair gauge knobs, and stair stringer layouts, This attachment tool for carpentry squares framing ensures consistency and accuracy in every stair design, making it perfect for professional carpenters and DIY enthusiasts.
How stair gauges repeat a layout
For a series of stair-like marks, a pair of stair gauges can clamp to a compatible framing or speed square. Set the gauges at the rise and run positions you need, then register the square on the workpiece and trace the successive layouts. Swanson describes its gauges as a set-once arrangement for tracing each tread and riser without remeasuring.
- Confirm the fit. Check that the gauges are intended for your square; product descriptions specify categories of compatible squares, not universal fit.
- Set both positions. Place one gauge at the chosen rise mark and the other at the chosen run mark on the square.
- Seat and secure them. Make sure each gauge sits squarely against the scale and clamps firmly so it cannot shift during layout.
- Register and trace. Hold the square against the workpiece edge, draw the layout, then slide the tool to the next position and repeat. Check the first layout against the plan before tracing the rest.
The gauges preserve the chosen positions; they do not verify that the rise and run are correct for the project. Confirm those dimensions independently.

Which tool fits the layout?
| Tool or setup | Best fit | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Speed or rafter square | A single angled line or ordinary stock | Sets and guides a line from a measured reference point. |
| Compatible square with stair gauges | Repeated rise-and-run positions, such as stair layouts | Holds two layout positions so successive marks can be traced without resetting them. |
| Large square with layout bar | Longer framing work or repeated stringer and deck layouts | Swanson’s Big 12 includes a layout bar that registers exact rise-and-run positions. |
Choose by the required angle or rise and run, the size of the workpiece, how reliably the tool registers against its edge, and whether you are making one mark or repeating a layout. A compact square is convenient for ordinary stock; a larger square and layout bar can help with longer or repeated framing layouts.

Check the line before you cut
- Use an actual reference edge and a measured starting point; a square cannot compensate for a misplaced reference.
- Verify the selected angle or rise and run against the project dimensions.
- Keep the square registered against the workpiece while drawing, and ensure gauges are seated squarely before repeating marks.
- Check the first mark and the dimensions before making a series of cuts. A guided line is only as dependable as its setup.
