Keep sewing tools clean and they’ll work more safely and reliably: wipe fabric shears dry, clear lint from rotary cutters and mats, and clean a sewing machine only as its manual directs. The right care depends on the tool—especially when sharpening blades or deciding whether a machine needs oil.

How to care for sewing scissors and shears

Wipe the blades with a dry cloth after use, especially after cutting synthetic fabric, whose abrasive lint can dull them. Reserve fabric shears for fabric: paper can dull the blades, and cutting a pin or needle can permanently damage them. Do not force a cut, which can deform or spread the blades.

Sharpening and pivot care

When scissors become dull, use a sharpening method appropriate for the shears or take them to a professional sharpener. Routine wiping and pivot lubrication are not substitutes for sharpening. Occasionally place a tiny drop of sewing-machine oil on the pivot screw, open and close the blades a few times, then wipe them with a soft cloth. Store shears in a box or protective pouch. These handling recommendations come from the Sewing & Craft Alliance’s 2005 Choosing and Using Scissors and Shears guideline (source).

How to clean and maintain a rotary cutter

Replace a dull blade rather than pressing harder. Extra pressure can make the blade cut into and scar the cutting mat. If a sharp blade still cuts poorly, check whether the securing nut is too tight and clear lint caught between the nut and blade.

  • Engage the safety guard whenever the cutter is not in use, and keep it out of children’s reach.
  • Use a rotary cutter with a rotary mat and a clear plastic ruler.

The Sewing & Craft Alliance’s 2005 Rotary Cutters guideline covers these care and safety points (source).

How to clean a rotary cutting mat

Remove surface lint and crumbs

Use a lint roller or napped lint brush to lift fabric crumbs and lint from the surface. For general cleaning, wipe the mat gently with a soft cloth and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive cleansers and solvents: they can damage the mat or remove its printed markings.

Clear lint from self-healing cuts

Fuzzy fabric can leave lint caught in the cuts of a self-healing mat. A mat smoother can pull out this embedded lint, but repeated smoothing may also wear away printed markings. Use it selectively; a lint roller or brush is for surface debris, not lint lodged in the cuts.

Store the mat safely

Keep mats flat and away from heat and sunlight. Do not lean or roll one for storage unless its maker’s instructions allow it. Extreme heat can warp a mat irreparably, while cold can make it brittle. These recommendations are from the Sewing & Craft Alliance’s 2005 Mats for Rotary Cutters guideline (source); check the current instructions for your particular mat.

How to clean a sewing machine

Use the small lint brush supplied with the machine, if one is provided, to clear lint from the accessible areas identified in its manual. Do not assume every machine should be opened or cleaned in the same places.

Lubrication is also model-dependent. Some machines require user-applied oil and others do not. Consult your machine’s manual for cleaning locations, lubrication requirements, service timing, and any warranty restrictions before opening or oiling it. The Sewing & Craft Alliance’s 2005 Sewing Machine Basics guideline likewise makes oil conditional on whether the machine requires lubrication (source).

Care for needles and fabric-marking pens

A skipped or irregular stitch does not always mean the machine needs repair. Check whether the needle suits the fabric, thread, and stitch, and whether it needs replacing. For fabric-marking pens, test on a scrap and follow the maker’s removal and heat instructions; some inks may be set by sunlight or an iron. These tool-selection cautions come from the Sewing & Craft Alliance’s 2005 Sewing Tools for Professional Results guideline (source).
