Yes—modern Microsoft Paint can remove an image background in Windows 11. Open the picture in Paint, choose the background-removal button, review the cutout, and save it as a PNG to preserve transparency. If the button is missing or the edges need correction, update Paint or use the Windows Photos app.
Before you start
- Use Windows 11 with the current Microsoft Paint app.
- Have the image file ready, preferably at the highest resolution available.
- Keep the original image unchanged so you can retry with a different selection.
- Plan to save the finished cutout as PNG if it must have a transparent background.
Microsoft began rolling out Paint’s automatic background-removal feature with Paint version 11.2306.30.0 and later through Windows Insider releases in 2023. The current interface can vary by Paint version, Windows servicing channel, and staged availability. See Microsoft’s background-removal announcement for the original feature details.
Remove the background from the whole image in Paint
- Open Paint from the Start menu. Make sure you open the current app named Paint, not Paint 3D, Photos, Clipchamp, or another image viewer.
- Choose File > Open and select the image, or drag the image into the Paint window.
- Look in the toolbar for Remove background, Background removal, or the corresponding background-removal icon. Microsoft may change the label or its position between app versions.
- Click the control and wait while Paint identifies the main subject and removes the surrounding background.
- Inspect the edges at a useful zoom level. Pay particular attention to hair, fur, thin objects, shadows, glass, and areas where the subject has a similar color to the background.
- Choose File > Save as, select PNG picture, and save a new copy.
Paint’s tool is designed as a quick, automatic cutout. It can process the complete canvas, but it is not a replacement for a detailed manual masking workflow.

Remove a background from only part of an image
You can limit the operation instead of processing the entire canvas. This is useful when a picture contains several unrelated subjects, a border, a watermark, or another object you want to leave untouched.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open the picture in Paint.
- Choose Rectangle Select and drag around the subject or area you want Paint to process.
- Click the background-removal control.
- Review the selected area and save the result as PNG when the transparency is correct.
Microsoft specifically documents background removal for both the full canvas and a rectangular selection. A tighter selection can also reduce the chance that Paint interprets another object as part of the intended scene.
What to do when Paint misses part of the subject
Automatic segmentation works best when the subject is sharp, clearly separated from its surroundings, and reasonably different in color from the background. Results are less predictable with:
- Fine hair, fur, lace, smoke, or semi-transparent material
- Glass, reflections, and complex shadows
- Thin wires, stems, straps, fingers, or other narrow details
- Motion blur, low-resolution images, or heavy JPEG compression
- Multiple overlapping subjects
- A subject and background with similar colors
If the result is poor, try Ctrl+Z to undo it, crop closer to the subject, use a higher-resolution source, or apply background removal to a tighter rectangular selection. If you need to manually protect and restore areas, use Photos instead.

If the Remove background button is missing
Do not assume that every Windows 11 installation has the same Paint toolbar. Try these steps in order:
- Update Paint: Open the Microsoft Store, go to its library or updates area, and install any available Paint update.
- Confirm the app: The standard workflow belongs to the current Microsoft Paint app. Paint 3D is not required.
- Restart Paint: Close the app completely, reopen it, and check again. If necessary, restart Windows after updating.
- Allow for availability differences: Microsoft Store app features and Windows integrations can depend on the installed build, rollout status, device, or region.
- Use Photos: The Photos app provides a documented built-in alternative with correction brushes.
Some Windows image actions integrated into features such as Click to Do have additional device and regional limitations. Those limitations should not be treated as proof that the underlying Paint app workflow is unavailable everywhere; check the app itself first.
Use Photos when the cutout needs correction
Photos is the most useful built-in fallback when Paint is unavailable or its automatic result is nearly right but needs adjustment. Microsoft’s documented workflow is:
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
- Open the image in Photos.
- Select the editing control and open the Background panel.
- Let Photos identify the background.
- Choose Remove, then select Apply.
- If the mask is inaccurate, use the brush tools. Choose Add mask to include an area that was missed, or Remove mask to protect a part of the subject that was incorrectly selected.
- Adjust brush size and softness as needed, then save a copy.
Photos also offers Blur to soften the existing background and Replace to substitute a solid color. Microsoft says Photos performs its AI background separation locally on the device. That explicit local-processing statement applies to Photos’ documented operation; it should not automatically be extended to Paint’s standard background-removal button.

Choose PNG when the removed area must remain transparent. JPEG/JPG does not preserve transparency, so saving a cutout as JPEG normally produces a solid background instead.
- PNG: The usual choice for a transparent cutout.
- JPEG/JPG: Suitable for ordinary photos, but not transparent backgrounds.
- WebP: Can preserve transparency, although compatibility depends on the destination.
- GIF: Limited color support and generally poor for high-quality photographic cutouts.
Paint may show transparency as a checkerboard or another visual indicator. Verify the saved PNG by placing it over both a light and a dark background in another editor, document, or design application. A white or black preview does not always mean the transparency was lost; some programs display transparent areas that way.

Paint, Photos, Office, or a dedicated editor?
| Tool | Best for | Main advantage | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paint | Fast, occasional cutouts | Simple and built into Windows | Few correction controls |
| Photos | Automatic removal that needs adjustment | Add mask and Remove mask tools | More suited to photo-editing workflows than complex compositing |
| Office | Images already in Word or PowerPoint | Manual “Mark Areas to Keep” and “Mark Areas to Remove” controls | Requires a supported Office application |
| Dedicated editor | Professional or highly detailed cutouts | Layers, masks, feathering, and edge refinement | More complexity and possibly additional cost |
Office’s background-removal tool is practical when the image already belongs in a document or presentation. It is not necessary for a simple standalone PNG. Older guides may recommend Paint 3D, but current Windows 11 instructions should start with Paint and Photos. Microsoft also lists Paint 3D and Designer among alternative workflows in its Office background-removal guidance.

Do not confuse ordinary background removal with newer Paint features such as Object Select, Generative Fill, or Cocreator. Microsoft’s documentation says those particular advanced AI tools require a Copilot+ PC and the latest Paint version. The original background-removal announcement did not establish Copilot+ hardware as a requirement for standard automatic background removal.
In short: background removal is a Paint feature; some newer AI tools in Paint are restricted to Copilot+ PCs. The exact button remains dependent on the Paint build available on your system.

Bottom line
For a straightforward Windows 11 cutout, open the image in current Paint, choose Remove background, and save the result as a PNG. Use Rectangle Select when only part of the canvas should be processed. If Paint lacks the feature or produces rough edges, Photos is the best built-in alternative because its Add mask and Remove mask controls allow corrections. For hair, glass, fur, shadows, or production-quality work, use an editor with manual masks and edge-refinement tools.
