Who is Vishwakarma?
Vishwakarma is described in Government of India sources as a divine creator and craftsman, and as an engineer associated with making and building. The Ministry of Tourism’s Vishwakarma Puja description places the observance in September and links it to Kanya Sankranti. The Press Information Bureau likewise describes Vishwakarma as a divine creator and craftsman in its festival and crafts feature.
Why are tools worshipped?
Tools and instruments are central to many descriptions of the observance because they are the means by which people carry out their work. The Government of India tourism portal describes workers in offices and workshops worshipping the instruments and tools used in their professions before Vishwakarma. The act recognizes the importance of skilled work and the equipment that makes it possible.

Its 16 September 2026 date report connects the date discussion to Kanya Sankranti and the Sun’s transition into Virgo that morning. This is a report for 2026, not a rule that the festival always falls on 17 September. For a local observance or puja time, check a local calendar or ask the organizer.

The festival is particularly associated with artisans, craftspeople, workers and industrial workplaces. The tourism portal describes observances in offices, workshops and factories, while the PIB’s overview of Vishwakarma and crafts places the deity in the context of skilled trades. The government’s PM Vishwakarma scheme supports 18 traditional trades, but that figure describes the scheme, not the number of trades that celebrate the festival.
