Piskel is a free, browser-based editor for pixel art, game sprites, tilesets, and short frame-by-frame animations. It includes live playback with adjustable frame delay and exports GIFs, PNGs, and spritesheets. The web editor remains available in 2026, although Piskel is a mature, slow-moving project rather than a rapidly evolving professional art suite. It is an excellent starting point for small sprites and classroom projects; larger productions may need Aseprite or Pixelorama.
What is Piskel?
Piskel is focused on small, grid-based raster artwork rather than general-purpose painting. You can draw a character, add or duplicate frames, edit each pose, preview the loop, and export the result for sharing or use in a game. The official site describes it for sprites, animations, pixel art, characters, and tilesets.
Use the official Piskel editor in a supported desktop browser. The project is also open source; its GitHub repository identifies JavaScript, HTML, and CSS as the main implementation technologies and lists the Apache 2.0 license (repository).
Is Piskel still available in 2026?
Yes. The web editor is live, and the official download page still offers offline applications for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Availability is not the same as active development, however:

- The official download page currently presents offline build v0.14.0 and warns that desktop applications receive limited testing and may not contain the newest fixes or features.
- GitHub lists v0.15.0 as its latest repository release, dated November 25, 2018 (release list). This may represent a different build track; do not treat the two version numbers as one definitive current version.
- The evidence supports calling Piskel mature and slow-moving, not definitively abandoned.
If you want the latest fixes and features offered by the project, the website recommends using the browser editor. Choose the offline build mainly when working without internet access is more important than update freshness.
What Piskel can do
- Pixel drawing: create hard-edged artwork at a deliberately small resolution such as 16×16, 32×32, or 64×64 pixels.
- Frame animation: build a sequence of individual images and preview it in real time.
- Timing control: adjust frame delay so the animation does not play too quickly or slowly.
- Sprite and tileset creation: prepare characters, effects, environmental tiles, and other small game assets.
- Common exports: animated GIF, PNG, spritesheet PNG, and ZIP/separate-frame workflows where offered by the editor.
The project documentation lists current Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Brave as browser targets. Brave may require changing its canvas-fingerprinting setting. The README also states that mobile and tablet support is not provided, so a phone or tablet is not a dependable Piskel workstation.

How Piskel animation works
A frame is one complete image in the sequence. Frame delay is the time that image remains visible before the next one. A loop starts again after the final frame when looping is enabled in the preview/export workflow. More frames do not automatically create smoother motion: each frame needs a meaningful change, and timing is as important as frame count.

A practical workflow is:
- Open Piskel in a desktop browser and create a new sprite.
- Set the canvas to the logical size your game will use. Drawing at the intended size avoids blurry, non-integer scaling later.
- Draw a readable first pose with a small palette and hard-edged pixel marks.
- Add or duplicate a frame, then change only the pixels needed to show movement.
- Repeat for the remaining poses and inspect the live preview.
- Adjust frame delay until the motion reads correctly.
- Save an editable project copy, then export a GIF for a quick visual check and a PNG spritesheet or frame output for implementation.
Exact button names can change, so follow the controls shown in the current editor rather than relying on an old tutorial’s menu labels.
Saving: the important beginner warning
A browser tab is not a backup. Closing or refreshing it, losing the session, or encountering a browser problem can discard unsaved work. Save an editable project early and checkpoint it after meaningful milestones. Keep the project file separate from the exported game assets, use descriptive names such as hero_run_v03, and back up important files outside the browser.
Instructional Piskel materials commonly use the .piskel project extension and demonstrate exporting spritesheets or GIFs (NVM pixel-art guide). Treat .piskel as Piskel’s editable project workflow, not as a universally interoperable industry format.

Choosing an export

A spritesheet is one image containing multiple equally sized frames in a strip or grid. Piskel creates the image; your engine still needs the correct slice dimensions and import settings. If sprites look blurry, check for filtering or interpolation in the engine, non-integer scaling, accidental resizing, or a smoothed preview. Crisp output depends on the entire pipeline, not only the editor.

The web version is usually the sensible first choice. If an offline build behaves unexpectedly, try the browser editor before assuming your project is broken. A cramped window can also make the interface difficult; Piskel is intended for a desktop browser and works best in a landscape layout.
Where Piskel’s limits matter
- Mobile: the project README does not provide mobile or tablet support.
- Production organization: Piskel is less suited to extensive layers, animation tags, tilemap authoring, scripting, command-line export, complex color management, or large projects. Do not assume a feature unless it is visible in the current editor or documented by the project.
- Automation and metadata: official material verifies image and animation exports, not universal engine metadata, command-line pipelines, or native integration with every game engine.
- Maintenance: the old GitHub release listing and the download page’s warning about offline builds make frequent updates and guaranteed future support uncertain.
- Backups: browser-based convenience puts more responsibility on you to save project files and exported checkpoints.
Large or sluggish projects should be treated as a sign to simplify the asset or move to a tool designed for larger production files. Release notes mention performance warnings for sprites beyond Piskel’s usual comfort zone and a 1 MB gallery limit in one release context; those notes should not be turned into a universal current file-size limit.

Piskel alternatives
Aseprite
Aseprite’s documentation covers layers, frames, animation workflow, tilemaps, slices, scripting, keyboard customization, command-line export, and richer .aseprite project files. Choose it when a desktop-first production workflow, automation, and detailed asset organization justify moving beyond Piskel’s simplicity. Check its official site for current licensing and pricing rather than relying on an old figure.

Pixelorama’s save and export documentation describes .pxo projects and PNG, animated PNG, GIF, and spritesheet exports, with video export through an external FFmpeg installation. It is a useful open-source, desktop-oriented alternative when you want a more developed project workflow but do not need Piskel’s browser-only convenience.
General image editors
Krita, GIMP, Photoshop, and similar applications make more sense for painting, compositing, photo work, or high-resolution illustration. They can be unnecessarily complex if your goal is simply a 32×32 animated sprite.

Who should use Piskel?
Choose Piskel for a first pixel-art lesson, a small 2D game, a short animation, a GIF preview, a simple tileset, or a fast concept that you can start without installing software.
Choose something else when you need a large commercial-game asset library, extensive timeline organization, tilemaps, scripting, command-line exports, reliable collaboration and versioning, mobile editing, advanced compositing, or a guaranteed actively maintained desktop product.

Verdict
Piskel remains a practical free tool for small animated sprites and pixel art. Start with the web editor, work at the final logical resolution, keep the palette and animation simple, and save project files plus exported checkpoints. It becomes the wrong tool when your project depends on deep production features, automation, large files, or a rapidly updated desktop ecosystem.
