When Visual Electric launched in the United States on December 5, 2023, it proposed a different way to make images with AI: put generations on an expandable visual canvas instead of burying them in a chat transcript. The idea was to help designers compare, arrange, and branch between visual directions. The product later evolved, joined Perplexity’s team in 2025, and was announced for wind-down as a standalone service.

Why move image generation out of chat?
A chat interface is convenient when a user wants to describe an image and refine it in conversation. But creative exploration is often less linear. A designer may want to compare several concepts, keep references beside them, revisit an earlier direction, or branch into alternatives without losing the work already done. In a long transcript, those images and prompts can become difficult to find and compare.

Visual Electric’s launch thesis was that the primary workspace for image-making should be visual. Rather than treating each result as the next message in a conversation, it placed images on a persistent, infinite canvas where users could see multiple directions at once. It still relied on prompts; the shift was in how results were organized and explored.
How the canvas workflow worked
In the December 2023 launch version, a user entered a prompt and generated four images. The images could then be dragged around the canvas, kept alongside other results, and used as starting points for further variations. That made it possible to build a rough mood board, compare alternatives side by side, and branch from a promising image rather than continue down one chronological thread.
The distinction mattered most for art direction. A prompt is only one part of a visual brief: format, palette, style, references, and exclusions also shape the result. Visual Electric put controls for several of those choices into the interface, including aspect ratio, dominant colors, and negative instructions. Style presets ranged from marker and classic animation to 3D render, airbrush, risograph, and stained-glass-like treatments. Prompt autocomplete offered suggestions, while remix and brush-based touch-up tools supported further iteration. An upscaler could increase resolution and detail.
The product also included an Inspiration feed of community-created images and their prompts. Users could remix public examples onto their own canvas, giving the tool a discovery loop as well as a generation workflow. A workflow product, not a new foundation model
At launch, Visual Electric used Stable Diffusion XL; it had not trained or introduced its own underlying image model. The company said it wanted to remain model-agnostic and use whichever models produced the best results. That let the team focus on workflow, editing, organization, and collaboration rather than model research, and potentially adopt improved models more quickly.
It was also a strategic bet. If image models became easier to access, a specialized interface could stand out through a better creative process. But that advantage would have to be durable: model providers could build their own editing and organization features, while reliance on outside models could expose a product to changes in cost, quality, availability, or licensing. The launch coverage described the company’s model strategy; it does not establish that this strategy caused the product’s later fate.
Who it was for—and where the limits were
Visual Electric pitched itself to designers, art directors, freelance creators, in-house brand and marketing teams, and other “prosumer” users. Its canvas was naturally suited to concept exploration: keep several possible directions visible, gather visual references, and develop imagery before committing to a final design. The interface did not, by itself, make an AI image a finished piece of production artwork. Typography, composition, brand compliance, accessibility, retouching, color management, and legal review could still require substantial human work.
The company offered an early customer example: CEO Colin Dunn said a small design team producing menus and other collateral for more than 600 universities used generated images instead of finding and editing stock photography. The company claimed the process took roughly one-tenth as long. That is a company-reported anecdote, not an independently verified benchmark.

Privacy and licensing were part of the product choice
The Inspiration feed helped users discover and remix work, but public sharing could be a poor fit for confidential concepts. Launch coverage described non-Pro generations as public by default, with private generations associated with Pro. The free tier was for personal use; paid plans included a royalty-free commercial-use license according to the launch-era plan descriptions.
Those distinctions mattered to anyone working on unreleased campaigns, client commissions, or product concepts. A commercial-use license is not the same as copyright certainty or legal indemnification, and privacy settings are not interchangeable with an enterprise data policy. Anyone assessing an AI tool for professional work should check the terms that apply to the exact plan and date, including sharing defaults, rights, retention, and export options.

These are historical launch prices, not current offers. The free-tier restriction also meant users could not sell those images or use them in marketing material, according to the launch report. “Unlimited” referred to the plan as described at launch and should not be read as a guarantee about every model, speed, or later service condition.

Visual Electric’s distinction was primarily its workspace, not a claim to have the best image model. Midjourney was known for aesthetic exploration and a strong creative community; its interface has changed over time, so a 2023 comparison should not be treated as a description of today’s product. DALL·E and ChatGPT made image generation approachable through natural-language conversation and iterative refinement. Adobe Firefly connected generation to a broader professional production ecosystem and Adobe tools.

In short, Visual Electric emphasized exploration and visual organization; conversational image tools emphasized describing and revising by dialogue; and Adobe emphasized generation within a wider creative-production environment. These are workflow distinctions, not universal rankings. The right fit depends on whether a creator values a spatial board, conversational iteration, model control, production integrations, privacy, or particular licensing terms.

Visual Electric’s product history became broader than the original canvas-only pitch. Its update archive lists later additions including collage tools, custom styles from mood boards, projects, Merge, image references across models, GPT Image support, video generation, plugins for Framer, Figma, and Webflow, and tools such as Reframe and Retexture. It also introduced VE2, a model of its own, and later added Chat Mode and an Art Director feature to help translate an intended image change into a prompt. The Visual Electric update archive records that evolution.
Adding chat did not necessarily contradict the initial idea. A canvas can remain the place where creative work is organized while conversational assistance becomes one way to make a change. The original argument was stronger as a case against making a linear transcript the whole workspace than as a rejection of chat itself.

Perplexity acquired the team; the standalone product was wound down
In October 2025, Visual Electric announced that its team was joining Perplexity’s Agent Experiences group and that the standalone product would be wound down within 90 days. The announcement said users would be offered data export and subscribers prorated refunds. This was an acquisition of the team, not evidence that the Visual Electric service continued as a Perplexity product. By August 2026, Visual Electric should be treated as discontinued unless an official reactivation is announced. The company’s announcement and TechCrunch’s report describe the transition and wind-down.

The ending sharpens the question at the heart of Visual Electric’s launch: can an independent creative interface remain distinctive when large AI platforms can combine models, editing, and workflow features? The acquisition and shutdown do not prove why the product did not continue. They do show why continuity matters alongside interface design. For a tool used in client work, creators should consider whether they can export not only finished images, but also prompts, references, canvas layouts, project metadata, and records of applicable licenses.
What to use instead now
Visual Electric is not a current signup recommendation. For a creator who needs an operating professional workflow, Adobe Firefly is one documented alternative: it connects image generation with Adobe’s broader tools and offers multiple model providers. As of August 2026, Adobe listed a free tier and paid plans including Standard at $9.99 per month, Pro at $19.99, Pro Plus at $49.99, and Premium at $199.99. Plan details and promotions can change; check Adobe’s current plans and product overview. Credit limits apply to some premium image, video, audio, and partner-model features, so estimate usage rather than assuming every generation is covered equally. Commercial-safety messaging is not a substitute for reviewing current terms against a project’s requirements.
Other choices fit different needs: Midjourney for stylistic exploration and community; ChatGPT for conversational iteration; Canva AI for generation within templates and lightweight publishing workflows; Ideogram where text within images matters; and Stable Diffusion interfaces for users who prioritize model control or local deployment and are comfortable with greater setup and licensing responsibility. Verify current availability, privacy, licensing, and pricing for any service before using it with client or commercial work.
Why Visual Electric still matters
Visual Electric did not prove that every AI image tool should use an infinite canvas, or that canvas-based work would displace chat. It made a durable design question visible: image generation is not only about what a model can produce, but also about how people compare, branch, edit, organize, and preserve the results. Its original canvas put those activities at the center. Its shutdown is the counterpoint: a thoughtful interface can be meaningful without guaranteeing a product’s long-term survival.
