Adobe announced Firefly’s Structure Reference and GenStudio on March 26, 2024, but they solve different problems. Structure Reference uses an image or sketch to guide the composition of a new image; GenStudio for Performance Marketing is an enterprise platform for creating, approving, distributing, and measuring branded marketing content. Neither promises pixel-perfect layouts or replaces human review.

What Adobe announced
The announcement paired a new creative control in Firefly with a broader marketing workflow product. Adobe described Structure Reference as a way to guide image generation using the layout of a supplied image. Separately, GenStudio was presented as a way for brands to manage content production across campaigns. Current Adobe documentation calls that enterprise product GenStudio for Performance Marketing.

What Structure Reference does
In Firefly’s Text to Image module at launch, a user could provide an image or sketch as a composition guide, describe a different subject in a prompt, and generate variations. The reference can influence the broad arrangement: where major objects sit, their relative scale, the pose or silhouette, and the image’s visual hierarchy.
That can help when exploring a room redesign without changing the room’s basic layout, turning a rough drawing into a more finished concept, colorizing line art, or generating alternative subjects in a similar pose. For a painter or illustrator, a sketch can serve as a loose staging plan: the generated result may retain the foreground, focal point, and balance of shapes while changing the medium, color, lighting, or subject.
“Reference” does not mean exact tracing. Structure Reference guides the generation; it is not a grid, CAD system, compositing tool, or guarantee of matching dimensions and perspective. Details may move, change, or disappear between variations.

| Tool | What it guides | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Structure Reference | Composition, layout, relative placement, pose, and spatial arrangement | Keep the arrangement of a room while generating a different interior treatment |
| Style Reference | Visual treatment, such as palette, texture, mood, and artistic rendering | Give a new image the broad look of a watercolor or a particular visual mood |
| Text prompt | The subject and semantic instructions | Describe the room, person, objects, or scene to generate |
Adobe said the two reference types could be combined. For example, a user could guide Firefly with a room sketch for composition, add a style reference for a painterly treatment, and use the prompt to specify the furniture or time of day. The controls influence different aspects, but neither makes the output deterministic.

How the launch-era workflow worked
- Open Firefly’s Text to Image module.
- Provide an image or sketch as the Structure Reference.
- Write a prompt naming the new subject and any important scene details.
- Generate several variations and compare how well they follow the composition.
- Add a Style Reference if the intended look is not coming through in the prompt alone.
- Finish precise details in a conventional design or painting application.
This describes the workflow in Adobe’s March 2024 announcement, not a guarantee that the current Firefly interface uses the same controls, models, or plan eligibility. Adobe’s current Firefly plans page describes changing plans and capabilities but does not, in the material cited here, confirm that Structure Reference remains exposed in exactly the same place or form.
If outputs drift from the intended arrangement, try a simpler reference with a clear silhouette and fewer distracting background details. State the desired subject explicitly. If the problem is look rather than layout, adjust the Style Reference instead. Generate multiple options, and handle logos, lettering, packaging, and exact alignment in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or another precise tool.
What GenStudio for Performance Marketing is
GenStudio is not simply another image generator. Adobe’s current documentation describes GenStudio for Performance Marketing as a standalone enterprise application that brings Creative Cloud and Experience Cloud capabilities together. Its purpose is to connect stages of marketing-content work:
- Plan: Work from campaign strategy, briefs, personas, and brand guidance.
- Create: Generate on-brand copy and visual variations for formats such as paid media, email, and display ads.
- Review: Collaborate on content and route it through approval.
- Manage: Save approved assets for reuse in later campaigns.
- Activate and measure: Distribute content to channels and examine performance insights to inform future work.
This lifecycle is aimed at organizations producing many channel-specific assets, not people who need an occasional image. The product is most relevant when teams need shared guidance, approvals, asset reuse, and a connection between creative production and marketing results.

Brand controls help, but do not provide legal clearance
Adobe says GenStudio can ingest brand guidelines, customer personas, and product descriptions to support on-brand creation and validation. Its documentation also describes governance controls that can block certain harmful or biased content. These tools can help standardize work, but a brand check cannot reliably resolve every strategic, factual, legal, or contextual question.
Adobe’s GenStudio licensing terms say content checks and review features are suggestions; customers remain responsible for evaluating whether outputs are appropriate, compliant, and suitable for publication. Teams still need people to verify claims, rights, regulated language, brand usage, and final creative quality.
Who is each product for?
| Reader or team | Likely fit |
|---|---|
| Individual image-maker | Firefly may suit exploration and generation; Structure Reference is useful if available in the current interface and composition guidance is valuable. |
| Designer or illustrator developing concepts | Structure Reference can help explore options from a sketch or layout, with conventional tools for precise finishing. |
| Agency creating many visual directions | Firefly plus Creative Cloud tools may support ideation and refinement, but the generated images still need review and production work. |
| Enterprise marketing organization | GenStudio may fit teams that need campaign-scale creation, governance, approvals, asset reuse, channel activation, and performance analysis. |
| Team with strict packaging, legal, or regulated layouts | Use AI for early concepts only where appropriate; rely on production tools and human approval for exact final layouts. |
GenStudio can be excessive for a freelancer or small company that only needs occasional image generation, particularly without Adobe’s enterprise ecosystem, organized brand assets, or connected marketing data. Structure Reference is a poor fit when exact product geometry, repeatable character identity, small text, or pixel-perfect placement is essential.

Actions, credits, and changing availability
Adobe’s GenStudio documentation, last updated June 10, 2026, lists these Generative Action rates: creating an email, paid-media ad, or display ad costs five actions per generation; regenerating a section costs one. The same documentation says brand validation, extracting information from uploaded guidelines, manually rechecking variants, and automatic asset tagging do not consume Generative Actions. Adobe says customers can contact an account representative about additional actions if they exceed their entitlement.

These are documented rates as of June 10, 2026, not permanent pricing rules. Enterprise contract terms and entitlements can vary. Firefly individual and team plans, prices, credits, model access, and promotions also change; check Adobe’s live plan information before buying. A consumer subscription price should not be treated as GenStudio enterprise pricing.
Commercial-use claims and practical limits
Adobe says its Firefly models were trained on licensed content, including Adobe Stock, and public-domain material whose copyright had expired. Adobe also says the models are designed for commercial use and that businesses may be eligible for intellectual-property indemnification. These are Adobe’s claims, not a blanket guarantee that every output is risk-free or every feature is covered.
Before using an output commercially, check the terms for the specific model, feature, plan, and jurisdiction. Review whether the result resembles protected third-party material and whether any brand, trademark, privacy, publicity, or advertising rules apply. You also need rights to any reference image you upload; using it as a prompt does not make it yours to reproduce. Adobe’s GenStudio terms place responsibility on customers for rights in uploaded data and for assessing outputs, and exclude some beta features from protections.
The terms also contain operational qualifications. Unless product documentation or the interface says otherwise, they state that non-English inputs and outputs for generative-AI features are not supported. The same terms specify different retention periods for different data categories, including 30 days for some content after license termination and up to 13 months for Insights data after import. Enterprise buyers should review the current terms and confirm language, retention, and data-handling requirements with Adobe before deployment.
Alternatives to consider
- Midjourney is worth evaluating when visual ideation and stylistic exploration matter more than Adobe-centered workflow integration.
- Canva Magic Studio may suit small businesses and social teams focused on templates and accessible branded content.
- OpenAI image tools are relevant for people already working in ChatGPT or the OpenAI ecosystem; assess current reference and editing capabilities separately rather than assuming feature parity.
- Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign remain useful for exact typography, marks, grids, packaging, and production-ready layouts, including as finishing tools for generated concepts.
Adobe’s 2024 launch addressed two different scales of creative work: Structure Reference gave Firefly users a way to steer composition, while GenStudio aimed to organize branded content production across an enterprise. The first offers guidance, not precision; the second offers workflow and governance, not automatic approval. Which matters depends on whether the need is to explore an image or to operate a marketing content pipeline.
