For most occupied rooms, washable acrylic or modified-acrylic interior emulsion is the better festive makeover paint. It forms a tougher film, tolerates wet wiping and comes in matt, satin and sheen finishes. Choose distemper when the priority is a low-cost, soft-matt refresh for a dry ceiling, rental, storeroom or other low-traffic space. The right choice still depends on wall moisture, expected contact, finish preference, preparation and drying time.
Festive painting succeeds or fails largely before the first topcoat. A dry, clean, repaired and properly primed wall gives either material a more even colour and longer service life. This guide compares the two coatings, matches them to each room, explains a reliable application sequence and shows how to plan coats, coverage and ventilation.

What is the difference between washable interior emulsion and distemper?
Washable interior emulsion is a water-based coating formulated to create a relatively continuous film that can be wiped after curing. Acrylic and modified-acrylic versions are sold in economy, mid-range and premium grades, with matt, soft-sheen, satin and other finishes. Distemper is traditionally a softer, more powdery or chalky matt coating. Oil-bound and acrylic distempers improve wipeability compared with traditional chalk distemper, but they are still generally chosen for lower-contact areas.
The Bureau of Indian Standards describes the role of washable distemper in IS 428 (2000): “The washable distemper is largely used for giving decorative finish on the inner surfaces of the building.” That wording recognises distemper as an interior decorative finish, not as a universal substitute for a scrub-resistant emulsion. Product chemistry and the manufacturer’s label matter more than the word “distemper” alone.

| Decision axis | Washable interior emulsion | Distemper |
|---|---|---|
| Cleaning | Higher wet-scrub and stain-cleaning capability when the grade is specifically formulated for washing. | Traditional chalky types tolerate repeated washing poorly; oil-bound and acrylic distempers can be more wipeable. |
| Appearance | Smooth matt, satin, sheen and premium finishes are available across product tiers. | Soft, powdery or flat matt appearance is characteristic of traditional distemper. |
| Traffic | Better suited to halls, living rooms, children’s rooms, corridors and walls around switches. | Better suited to ceilings and low-traffic rooms; avoid areas exposed to condensation or water vapour. |
| Upfront budget | Premium grades cost more initially, although economy emulsions can narrow the difference. | Usually the lower-cost refresh option, especially for ceilings and rentals. |
| Substrate preparation | Performs best on a smooth, sealed substrate with the recommended primer and putty system. | Can be more forgiving on rough or porous interior surfaces, but the product instructions still govern preparation. |
| Moisture and marks | Choose a washable or stain-resistant grade and correct dampness before painting. | Moisture and frequent contact can accelerate chalking or failure. |
In practical terms, select the coating based on how the room will be used rather than on colour alone. A pale wall beside a switchboard may need more cleaning than a darker wall behind a bed; a ceiling may never be touched at all.

Which paint is best for internal walls during a festive makeover?
Use a washable interior emulsion for most internal walls in an occupied home. It is the safer default for surfaces that collect fingerprints, food splashes, dust or marks from furniture. Distemper remains sensible where cleaning is infrequent and the visual goal is an economical, dead-matt finish.
Living room and entrance
Choose washable matt or a restrained soft-sheen emulsion. Guests, moving furniture and contact around doorways and switches create marks that are easier to remove from a washable film. A matt grade hides minor surface variation better than a high sheen, while a soft sheen can make wiping easier if the wall has been prepared smoothly.
Dining area and corridors
These are repeated-contact zones. Select a washable or stain-resistant emulsion rather than traditional distemper, and keep a small amount of the mixed colour for future touch-ups. Cleaning ability is useful only after the film has cured according to the label; rubbing a newly painted wall can burnish or remove the finish.
Children’s room
A washable, low-odour interior product is the practical choice for walls likely to receive fingerprints, crayons or toy scuffs. Plan ventilation and drying time so the room is not occupied before the stated interval. “Low VOC” is a product claim, not a reason to ignore the label, safety sheet or the need for fresh air.
Bedroom
Matt emulsion gives a calm, low-reflection appearance and is usually the most versatile option. Distemper can work when the room has little contact, no condensation problem and the owner accepts that repeated washing is limited. Keep the wall dry and avoid placing furniture hard against a freshly coated surface.
Ceiling
Distemper can be a practical budget finish for a sound, dry ceiling that is not touched. Use emulsion when you want a more uniform film, a particular sheen or the ability to wipe occasional marks. Check for roof leaks or recurring condensation first; paint cannot compensate for a wet substrate.

Damp or condensation-prone wall
Find and correct the moisture source before choosing a coating. Repair leaks, improve ventilation or address rising damp as appropriate, then allow the wall to dry fully. Little Greene’s product guidance states that distemper is not recommended for “areas of high traffic, condensation or water vapour.” A washable emulsion also requires a dry substrate; a more expensive paint will not stop active dampness.
Can distemper be used on interior walls?
Yes, distemper can be used on interior walls when the room is dry, lightly used and the desired finish is soft matt. It is a reasonable choice for a rental refresh, storage room, guest room with little contact or a ceiling. It is a poor choice for walls that must be scrubbed frequently, are beside cooking areas or suffer condensation.
Read the specific tin carefully. Traditional chalk distemper, oil-bound distemper and acrylic distemper do not have identical water resistance or application requirements. An oil-bound product may permit gentle wiping, while a chalkier coating can mark or powder when repeatedly washed. Do not infer performance from a colour card or from the generic word “distemper.”
Distemper can also reveal a weak or dusty substrate. If the existing coating is loose, powdery or contaminated, painting over it may produce peeling or patchy colour. Scrape unstable material, clean the surface and follow the stated primer or sealer system before applying the new finish.
How should you prepare walls before either paint?
Preparation is the largest controllable factor in the visible result. The sequence below follows the type of system specified in Nippon Paint’s 2025 Matex EZ Wash technical data sheet; another product may require different dilution, primer or recoat instructions.
- Inspect and dry the wall. Confirm that the surface is free of active dampness, fungus, grease, dust and loose coating. Stop and solve leaks or condensation rather than sealing them under paint.
- Remove failing material. Scrape flaking or powdery paint and sand the edges so the transition is firm. Protect floors, fittings and electrical points from dust and splashes.
- Repair defects. Fill cracks, dents and uneven areas with a compatible acrylic wall putty where the system calls for it. Allow repairs to dry, then sand until the surface is even to the hand and side light.
- Prime the substrate. Apply the specified interior wall primer to seal porous repairs and equalise absorption. Let it dry for the period on the product label; a primer that remains soft can cause drag, colour variation or poor adhesion.
- Prepare the topcoat. Stir thoroughly and dilute only within the manufacturer’s range using clean water. Nippon lists up to 40% clean-water dilution for Matex EZ Wash, with lower-dilution guidance for dark shades; do not transfer that ratio to another brand without checking its data sheet.
- Apply with suitable tools. Use a clean roller and brush, keep a wet edge and avoid overworking an area as it begins to dry. Use the same application method across a wall so texture and sheen remain consistent.
- Apply the specified coats. Two topcoats are common for a prepared wall, while a strong colour change, porous repair or product instruction may call for three. Respect the stated interval between coats.
- Ventilate and cure. Keep air moving without blowing dust onto the wet film. Delay heavy cleaning, taping, hanging decorations or pushing furniture against the wall until the label’s drying and curing guidance has been met.
Distemper may be more forgiving of a rough or porous interior surface, but it still needs a sound, clean base. If the manufacturer specifies a sealer, primer or special mixing method, that instruction overrides a general decorating rule.

Plan for the number of coats stated by the product, not a fixed rule applied to every wall. Two topcoats usually give a prepared surface an even colour; three may be needed over a dark shade, a repaired wall or when the first coat shows noticeable suction. Primer is a separate layer and does not replace the required topcoats.

For Nippon Paint Matex EZ Wash, the 2025 technical data sheet states a 4–6 hour interval between topcoats. That interval is a product instruction for the stated conditions, not a guarantee that every room will dry in the same time. High humidity, low temperature, poor airflow and heavy dilution can extend drying.
Apply the second coat only when the first is dry enough to resist light contact without lifting. Rushing the interval can trap moisture, create roller drag and produce uneven sheen. Conversely, leaving a wall for a much longer period is generally acceptable if it remains clean and the label does not specify a maximum recoat window.
How much paint do you need, and what does the coverage mean?
Measure each wall’s width and height, subtract large openings, then add the areas of the walls to be coated. Multiply by the planned number of coats and divide by the product’s stated coverage. Buy a small allowance for texture, repairs, colour changes and application losses rather than relying on the theoretical maximum.

Coverage numbers are not a promise that one litre will finish every room. A newly puttied patch, unsealed plaster or textured wall consumes more material than a smooth, previously sealed surface. Keep the batch and shade information so a later touch-up does not produce a visible mismatch.
How do the costs of washable emulsion and distemper compare?
Distemper is usually the lower-upfront-cost option, which is why it remains common for ceilings, rentals and large low-contact areas. Premium washable emulsions cost more at the purchase stage, but economy emulsions can reduce the gap. The meaningful comparison is the complete system: surface repairs, putty, primer, topcoats, labour, masking and the likelihood of repainting after stains or chalking.
A cheap coating applied over a damp or dusty wall can fail quickly and require another labour cycle. Conversely, paying for a washable grade on a ceiling that is never touched may add little practical value. Use the room-by-room plan and the product’s coverage to compare litres and labour rather than comparing only the price of a tin.
Current retailer prices, seller terms and shade availability change, so verify them at the time of purchase. The technical figures above describe product performance and coverage, not a current quotation for a complete festive painting job.

Are washable paints safer or lower in VOC?
VOC content differs by product and colour, so compare the manufacturer’s published figure rather than assuming every emulsion is low-VOC. Asian Paints’ product FAQ lists 24.14 g/L VOC for Tractor Emulsion flat white, 28.22 g/L for Tractor Acrylic Distemper flat white and 55.62 g/L for Royale Luxury Emulsion regal white. These are product-specific published values, not a universal ranking of all emulsions and distempers.
Ventilate during application and drying, keep children and pets away from wet surfaces, and follow the label and safety data sheet for storage, splashes and disposal. A low-odour or low-VOC claim does not remove the need for airflow or make an uncured film safe to scrub. If anyone in the household is sensitive to fumes, schedule the work when the room can remain unoccupied for the stated drying period.
What problems occur after painting, and how can you fix them?
Uneven colour or patchy sheen
Uneven suction from unprimed putty, inconsistent dilution or stopping mid-wall can leave patches. Let the coat dry, identify whether the variation follows repairs or application boundaries, then apply the specified primer or an additional uniform topcoat rather than spot-rolling random areas.
Chalking or powder on a wiped cloth
Chalking is more common with traditional distemper, especially after moisture exposure or repeated rubbing. Remove loose powder, correct dampness, and repaint with a compatible sealer and finish recommended for the substrate. Do not apply a washable emulsion over active chalk without stabilising the base.

Peeling usually indicates moisture, contamination, a weak old coating or insufficient drying between layers. Scrape back to a firm edge, solve the moisture source, clean and dry the wall, then rebuild the primer-and-topcoat sequence. Painting over a blister only hides the defect briefly.
Roller marks and lap lines
Excessive dilution, a dry roller, poor overlap or working in direct heat can create bands. Maintain a wet edge, load the roller evenly and complete one wall in a continuous sequence where possible. Keep dilution within the stated range; extra water does not make application easier if it reduces film build.
Stains that return through the new coat
Nicotine, cooking grease, rust and water marks can migrate through ordinary topcoat. Clean the source, allow the wall to dry and use the stain-blocking or isolating primer specified for that contaminant before repainting. A washable finish helps with future surface marks but does not automatically block a stain from below.

Which option should you choose for your festive project?
Use this decision sequence before buying colour:
- Is the wall damp, mouldy or exposed to condensation? Fix the moisture and let the substrate dry; do not select paint as a moisture cure.
- Will people touch or clean the wall regularly? Choose a washable or stain-resistant emulsion for entrances, corridors, dining areas, children’s rooms and switch zones.
- Is the surface a dry ceiling or low-traffic room? Distemper is a reasonable budget choice when a soft matt appearance and infrequent cleaning are acceptable.
- Do you need a particular sheen or a more uniform film? Select an emulsion grade that offers the finish you want; traditional distemper is predominantly flat matt.
- Can the room remain ventilated and unused during drying? If not, postpone the work rather than shortening the manufacturer’s interval.
- What does the complete system require? Price primer, putty, labour, tools and the number of coats, not just the topcoat container.
For a typical occupied home being prepared for guests, the balanced specification is washable matt emulsion on contact walls, a compatible interior primer and acrylic wall putty where needed, and distemper reserved for suitable dry ceilings or low-contact spaces. That combination puts cleaning performance where it matters without paying for premium washability everywhere.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I paint washable emulsion over old distemper?
Only after checking that the old distemper is sound and well bonded. Remove powder and loose material, clean the wall, sand where appropriate and use the primer or sealer specified for that substrate; a simple topcoat over chalky distemper can peel.
How soon can furniture be moved back after interior painting?
Wait until the finish is dry to the label and give it additional curing time before tight contact, heavy cleaning or applying adhesive decorations. Dry-to-touch and fully cured are different states, especially in humid rooms.
Is acrylic distemper washable like emulsion paint?
Some acrylic or oil-bound distempers permit gentle wiping, but their wet-scrub performance is product-specific. Check the technical sheet for cleaning and scrub claims instead of treating every distemper as equivalent to a washable emulsion.
Can I use exterior paint inside for a festive makeover?
Do not substitute products casually. Interior and exterior coatings are formulated for different exposure, odour and film requirements; use a product labelled for interior use and follow its safety and ventilation instructions.
