A wedding invitation should tell guests who is hosting, what they are invited to, when and where it will happen, and how to reply if a response is requested. A printed invitation suite can add an RSVP card, details insert, and envelopes; keep the main card focused and move extra logistics to an insert or wedding website. The right format depends on your event, guests, and preferred level of formality.

What counts as a wedding card?

Wedding stationery can include more than the invitation itself. A mailed suite may contain the main invitation, a response card, a details card, envelopes, and sometimes a separate reception card. Couples may also send save-the-dates, day-of materials, and thank-you cards. Digital wedding information can supplement or replace some printed inserts.

A response card is used to collect a reception headcount; it is not traditionally included with an invitation to the ceremony only. A separate reception card is useful when reception information differs from the ceremony details. These are traditional U.S. conventions, not requirements for every couple or culture. Emily Post’s formal invitation guidance and its wedding invitation overview explain the conventional suite and reply-card roles.

What information belongs on the main invitation?

Include the essentials guests need to understand the invitation and attend:

  • How to Use: Use RSVP cards for more than just wedding invitations but for all occasions. With a blank response card, guests can simply check off "accept" or "decline", then mail it back.
  • Widely Using: Perfect for the engagement party, bridal shower, baby shower, rehearsal dinner, retirement party, anniversary, housewarming, or any special occasion.
  • The host or hosts, if you want to name them.
  • The couple’s names.
  • The event or ceremony being held.
  • The date and start time.
  • The venue name and location.
  • How to respond, when an RSVP is requested and the response instructions are not on a separate card.

Keep the main card legible and uncluttered. Put accommodation, travel, directions, dress guidance, or other extended logistics on a details card or wedding website rather than crowding the invitation. Shutterfly’s 2026 etiquette guide likewise treats the invitation as the place for core details, with additional information handled separately.

How should wedding invitation wording work?

Formal wording

Traditional U.S. formal invitations often spell out hosts’ names and date details. Emily Post distinguishes “the honour of your presence” for a ceremony in a house of worship from “the pleasure of your company” for other venues. The formal approach also gives the wedding city and state, though the state may be omitted when all guests are local. These are conventions, not universal rules.

Less formal wording

A casual invitation can omit titles and use more conversational date phrasing. It should still make clear who is hosting, what the event is, and when and where it takes place, plus how to respond if needed. Match the wording to the event’s overall feel; The Knot’s wording guide, updated July 16, 2026, offers examples across levels of formality.

Where to put attire and gift information

Traditional etiquette advises against putting gift requests or attire information on the wedding invitation itself; Emily Post allows “Black tie” on a reception invitation. Couples may instead put practical additional information on a wedding website. Choose wording that suits your guests and event rather than treating one convention as binding on everyone.

Printed RSVP cards or online RSVP?

Both approaches can work. A printed response card suits a mailed suite and gives guests a familiar way to reply. Online RSVP can reduce the number of printed pieces, but guests need clear, easy-to-follow instructions. There is no evidence here that one method reliably produces higher response rates or suits every guest better.

Consideration Printed response card Online RSVP
Guest access A physical reply route; include clear instructions and, conventionally, a stamped, addressed return envelope. Convenient for guests comfortable with the site or device; consider a postal option for guests who may not be.
Information to collect Can gather attendance and meal or other requested details if the card provides space. Can collect attendance and requested details through the response form.
Mailing logistics Requires preparing and mailing reply materials; international postage may complicate returns. Avoids a mailed reply, but the access instructions must be easy to find and use.
Physical suite Adds a card and usually a reply envelope to the printed pieces. May reduce separate printed response materials.
Style and formality Fits naturally with a traditional mailed suite. Can work with printed invitations when the online instructions are clearly provided.

Choose based on guest comfort, the details you need to collect, postage, and the look of your stationery. If replies are going somewhere other than a stamped return envelope, state exactly how guests should respond. Shutterfly’s etiquette guidance and The Knot’s wording examples cover invitation and response approaches.

How to assemble a clear invitation suite

  1. Put the invitation first. Include the hosts and couple as appropriate, event, date, time, and venue.
  2. Add a reply method if you need a response. Use a response card and return envelope, or provide simple online instructions.
  3. Move extra logistics to an insert or website. Use a details card for information guests need beyond the core invitation.
  4. Add a separate reception card only when useful. It can clarify reception details when those differ from the ceremony invitation.
  5. Check the complete set before mailing. Confirm names, date, time, location, reply instructions, and that each printed piece has its corresponding envelope.

What to check when buying a printed set

A “wedding invitation set with RSVP cards” is a useful product description when you want a coordinated mailed suite. Check the specific listing for included quantities, card dimensions, paper, and envelope details; those vary by product, so a general guide cannot establish them. If you are ordering custom printing, confirm that the proof includes every event detail and response instruction before approving it.
