“Telephone logo” can mean a generic handset icon—or one of several historic company marks. Western Electric’s lightning-strike wordmark, the Bell System bell and AT&T’s globe are distinct identities, not interchangeable versions of a universal telephone logo. A handset pictogram is a separate, generic symbol; the sources covered here do not identify one particular icon or its owner.
Which mark do people mean by “telephone logo”?
Start with what the design depicts. A handset pictogram usually signals calling; it does not, by itself, identify a telephone company. The historic corporate marks discussed here belong to particular organizations and have separate histories.
| Mark | What it depicts | Identity and history |
|---|---|---|
| Western Electric wordmark | The words “Western Electric” in a distinctive, lightning-strike type treatment | Western Electric says the wordmark was patented in 1910. The company says its branding was simplified in 1969 and that it commissioned a historically consistent wordmark standard in 2019. Western Electric’s wordmark history. |
| Bell System emblem | A bell inside a circle | A separate Bell System identity redesigned in 1969, credited to Saul Bass and Bass & Yager by Bell System Memorial. Bell System Memorial’s logo history. |
| AT&T globe | A globe suggesting worldwide electronic communications | A later AT&T identity associated with the planned divestiture of the Bell operating companies. Bell System Memorial describes it as separate from the Bell System emblem. Bell System Memorial’s logo history. |
| Generic handset pictogram | A telephone receiver, often used as a call symbol | Not a corporate mark in itself. The sources cited here do not establish a particular pictogram’s designer, owner, date or license. |
What is distinctive about Western Electric’s lightning wordmark?
Western Electric describes its historic mark as a fifteen-character wordmark, not a bell emblem or handset icon. It says the slanted strokes and thorn-like serifs were intended to make the letters look electrically charged, drawing inspiration from the hawthorn bush. Its company history reproduces the original designer’s patent description: “The design of my new ornamental font of type is accomplished by the ornamental application to the letters and characters of the thorn of the hawthorn bush…so arranged as to give to the appearance of the letters and characters an electric effect…” Western Electric’s wordmark history.

Western Electric says Saul Bass overhauled its branding along with the Bell System in 1969, replacing the stylized lettering with a simpler Helvetica treatment. It says it commissioned its current historically consistent, designer-friendly wordmark standard in 2019. These are details of Western Electric’s wordmark history; they do not make the Western Electric mark and the Bell emblem the same logo.
How did the Bell System and AT&T identities differ?
The Bell System’s 1969 identity used a bell emblem. Bell System Memorial credits Saul Bass and Bass & Yager with that redesign and reproduces a contemporary Bell Telephone Magazine explanation of how the design would appear across company materials and equipment. The archive reports that AT&T described the rollout as involving 135,000 vehicles, 22,000 buildings, 1,250,000 phone booths and 170,000,000 telephone directories. Those are historical rollout figures attributed to AT&T by the archive, not current counts or independently verified figures. Bell System Memorial’s logo history.

The AT&T globe came later, in connection with the planned divestiture of the Bell operating companies. Bell System Memorial describes its meaning as “a world circled by electronic communications.” It is a different mark with a different corporate context; it should not be treated as another name for the Bell System bell.
Can you use one of these telephone-related logos?
Do not assume that an old logo is free to reproduce. Western Electric’s current trademark guidance says third-party use of its logos requires a license or written permission and advises that references to its marks be truthful and non-misleading. Check Western Electric’s trademark guidance before using its marks.
