The 2021 Quilts & More Quilt-Along features Jessica Dayon’s Soft & Spooky, an oversize 82½-inch-square throw built from Plus, Dot, and Star blocks. The eight-week schedule moves from fabric planning through block sewing and quilt-top assembly, with a catch-up week built in. What is the Soft & Spooky Quilt-Along?
It is a guided sew-along for one quilt pattern by Jessica Dayon, presented by Quilts & More. The finished throw measures 82½ inches square and uses three block types: Plus, Dot, and Star. The project page is headed “Soft & Spooky Quilt-Along (2021)” and was updated May 8, 2024.

What happens each week?
The schedule is designed to spread the work across eight weeks, with a catch-up week before assembly begins.

How to plan a scrappy version
For varied scraps, use the pattern’s labeled piece diagrams to check the size and shape needed for each component. For a block made with two fabrics, the project page gives these minimum cuts:

| Star | One 5½-by-8-inch rectangle or a 2-by-22-inch strip | One 4-by-7½-inch rectangle |
These are the stated minimum cuts for the blocks, not a substitute for the pattern’s complete cutting instructions. Sort the pieces for each block together and label them before sewing so similar shapes from different fabric combinations do not get mixed up.

How to cut and organize the pieces
- Use a cutting mat and a fresh rotary-cutter blade. Trim one fabric edge against a mat line first to establish a straight edge.
- Layer fabric to cut multiple pieces at once, but keep the stack to about three layers to reduce shifting.
- Keep each block’s fabric pieces together with a labeled pin or clip.
- For a focal print, consider fussy-cutting a motif for a Plus piece, the Dot center, or the Star center.
How to keep blocks and rows aligned
Measure the blocks before joining them to sashing. If they are consistently larger or smaller, adjust the sashing squares to suit the blocks rather than allowing the difference to accumulate through the quilt top.

- If pieces differ by more than about ¼ inch, unpick and resew rather than forcing the seam.
- Keep seams visible as you sew so you can monitor their position. Pin row joins at the seam intersections.
- Lay out the blocks on a design wall, floor, or spare bed to check placement and the direction of any directional prints before sewing the rows together.
When and how to fit the borders
Finish the quilt top before cutting border strips. Small variations in seam allowance can change the top’s final dimensions, so cutting borders earlier risks strips that do not fit correctly.

- Measure the quilt top across the center and at both ends of the edge to be bordered.
- If the three measurements differ, average them to determine the border length.
- Mark the center of the border strip and quilt edge. Match the centers and ends, then pin between those points.
- If easing a slight difference in length, place the longer edge down against the feed dogs.
- Sew with the quilt top facing up where possible, monitoring the seams as you work. Pin carefully to help maintain an even ¼-inch seam.
