Welcome to a new school year—a chance for students to learn, make connections, and find their place in the school community. Returning can bring excitement, nerves, or both, especially for children starting school for the first time. Families can make the transition easier by offering reassurance, building steady routines, and checking the current guide from their child’s own school or district.

Make room for the transition

Every student arrives with a different mix of feelings and needs. In San Francisco Unified School District’s 2026–27 back-to-school guide, Superintendent Dr. Maria Su notes that a child may experience “a variety of emotions,” especially when beginning school for the first time. Listening without rushing to fix those feelings can help a child feel understood. Talk about what they are looking forward to, what feels uncertain, and who they can ask for help at school.

Belonging is built through relationships, not just first-day preparations. Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Director Stephen D. Dackin writes that “Effective school-family communication and daily staff-student interactions are crucial for building a positive culture.” Families and educators can support that connection by sharing useful information early, asking questions, and making it clear that a student can seek help when something feels difficult.

Use your school’s current guide to prepare

There is no single nationwide back-to-school checklist. Dates, required forms, health rules, transportation details, schedules, meals, and supply lists depend on the school and district. For example, the 2026 guide from Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) includes local packet, health, route, schedule, and first-day information; those dates and requirements apply to PWCS, not other districts. SFUSD publishes California-specific health guidance, while the District of Columbia has its own local information and resources.

Start with the official website or communications for the student’s school or district, and confirm that the information is for the current school year. Work through the relevant items:

  • Forms and contact details: Complete the school’s information packet and update emergency contacts and communication preferences. SFUSD directs families to update contact details in ParentVUE; PWCS asks families to verify information used for email, text, and emergency notices.
  • Health requirements: Confirm required immunizations and health forms with the school or district. Rules differ by jurisdiction, and appointments may take time to arrange.
  • Getting to school and daily schedules: Review bus routes or other transport arrangements, the student’s schedule, and attendance and absence procedures. PWCS cautions families to recheck transportation information because routes and schedules can change.
  • Meals and supplies: Check meal details, any relevant accommodations, and the school-specific supply list before shopping.

Make preparation manageable

Build predictable routines

In the days before school starts, gradually settle into the wake-up, bedtime, and morning routines the student will need. If possible, discuss how the first morning will work and where the student should go for help. A predictable plan can make a new schedule feel more manageable, without requiring every part of the transition to go perfectly.

Ask for help with supplies

Use the current school supply list rather than assuming every student needs the same items. A school backpack may be useful, but not every student needs a new one. If buying supplies is difficult, contact the school and ask what assistance is available. PWCS’s family guide directs families to reach out to their school for help; a 2025 District of Columbia government newsletter also described community supply events, including a planned Ward 7 distribution of 500 backpacks filled with supplies. That figure was for that particular event, not a citywide total or a current guarantee of availability.

Keep communication open after the first day

Preparation continues once school begins. Check the communication channels your school uses, let staff know about changes that may affect the student, and ask whom to contact with questions about attendance, learning, health, or adjustment. If a child is struggling with the transition, share what you are noticing and ask the school what support may help. Small, timely conversations can give families and educators a clearer picture of how the student is settling in.
