To photograph a big tree, first decide what you want the picture to show: the whole tree, its scale beside a person or familiar object, or a striking detail. Then choose a viewpoint and framing that serve that purpose. You do not need special gear: a phone, thoughtful composition, and suitable light can make a strong tree photograph.
Choose what the photograph should show
Treat the tree as a portrait subject: a successful image does not always need to include every branch. Decide which of these stories matters most before you compose.
- The whole tree: Show the trunk, crown, and enough surrounding landscape to place the tree in its setting.
- Its size: Include a person or another familiar reference so viewers can judge the tree’s scale. Keep the reference near the tree in the scene rather than making it dominate the frame.
- A distinctive feature: Focus on a notable trunk, branch, canopy, or other characteristic when the full tree will not fit or would make the important detail too small. National Geographic’s tree-photography guide notes that a compelling part of a tree can communicate more than forcing the entire subject into one frame.
Fit the tree into the frame
Start with your position and orientation
If the site allows, step farther back to include more of a nearby tree. Try turning the phone or camera vertically for a tall trunk, or horizontally when the crown and landscape need more room. Check the edges of the frame for branches or other distractions before taking the picture.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse a wide-angle view with care
A wide-angle lens can help include a large, nearby tree, especially when you cannot move farther away. But a very wide perspective may stretch or distort objects near the frame’s edges. Review the result and keep important references away from the extreme edges if their shape matters. Adobe discusses the trade-off between capturing a tree’s vastness up close and distortion, and National Geographic describes edge distortion as a consideration in tree photographs.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
Try panorama when one frame is not enough
If the whole tree still will not fit, use your phone’s panorama mode and follow its on-screen movement guide steadily. Indiana DNR recommends trying a phone panorama when a tree cannot be captured in a standard frame. Panorama can help with a broad crown or tall subject, though moving branches or people may not join cleanly across the stitched image. For a big-tree nomination, Indiana DNR asks for images that show as much crown spread as possible and convey the tree’s size or distinctive features: Indiana Big Tree Register photo guidance.
Use light to shape the mood
For warm, softer light, try shortly after sunrise or before sunset. The National Park Service recommends these golden-hour periods and warns that high-noon sun can create harsh shadows. Overcast light is another useful option for photographing trees, as Adobe notes; it can make illumination more even when direct sun would create strong contrast. Choose according to the look you want and the conditions at the site rather than treating any time or weather as a rule. See the National Park Service photography tips and Adobe’s tree-photography guide.

Adjust camera settings only when they help
There is no single correct exposure recipe for every tree, camera, or lighting condition. If your camera or phone offers manual controls, use them to shape the result:

A faster shutter can reduce blur from moving leaves; a slower shutter can record more motion but may blur the scene if the camera moves.
- ISO changes light sensitivity. Raising it can help in dim conditions, but may add visible image noise.
- Aperture affects both the amount of light and depth of field: how much of the scene appears in focus.
Make one adjustment at a time and review the image. The National Park Service’s photography tips explain these controls; the best choices depend on your equipment, the available light, and whether you want the whole scene sharp or motion visible.

Decide whether extra gear is worthwhile
| Option | What it helps with | Trade-off or alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Phone panorama | Includes more of a tree when a standard frame is too narrow. | Requires a steady sweep; moving elements may not stitch cleanly. No additional gear is needed. Indiana DNR suggests this technique. |
| Wide-angle camera lens | Fits more of a large, nearby tree into the frame. | Can distort subjects near the edges. Step back or use a panorama if practical. Adobe and National Geographic discuss the framing benefit and distortion trade-off. |
| Tripod | Supports deliberate compositions, low-light work, or long exposures; a remote shutter can reduce movement caused by pressing the shutter. | Usually unnecessary for ordinary handheld photographs in adequate light. The National Park Service covers camera technique; a tripod is a tool for specific shooting conditions, not a requirement. |
A phone panorama or a change of viewpoint may solve a framing problem without buying a lens. Consider a tripod if you plan to make long exposures or work in low light; for casual daylight photos, handheld shooting is often enough.

Look for a clear view from a permitted path or public viewpoint. Respect closures, posted signs, and property boundaries; do not trespass or ignore park safety rules to get closer. Adobe’s tree-photography guide explicitly cautions against crossing boundaries or disobeying safety signs for a photograph.
