Reliefs are three-dimensional images or ornaments that project from—or are recessed into—a background surface. Unlike a freestanding sculpture, a relief remains attached to its background and is designed mainly to be viewed from the front. The amount and direction of that projection distinguish low, medium, high and sunk relief.

What is relief sculpture?

A relief is sculpture made on a background plane: its forms rise from the surface or are cut into it rather than standing independently. The National Gallery, London describes the process as sculpture “built up in layers on a flat ground,” while the National Portrait Gallery defines it as “a raised image projecting from a flat background.”

Because the background supports the image, reliefs are generally composed for frontal viewing. They can still use depth, overlap, shadow and perspective to suggest space, but they are not intended to be viewed equally from every side like sculpture in the round.

What are bas-relief and high relief?

Relief types are distinguished chiefly by how far the forms project from the background. The terms describe a continuum; their boundaries are qualitative, not a universally fixed measurement.

AB Epoxy Sculpt Clay, with Tools, White, 2 Part Modeling Compound 1 Pound
  • AB EPOXY SCULPTURE CLAY: Mix the A&B chemical raw materials thoroughly in a ratio of 1:1 by volume, It will fully harden after 24 hours (the higher the temperature, the shorter the hardening time), which will not shrink after hardening. The advantage is that it has high viscosity, high plasticity, and will not shrink after hardening
  • MULTI-PURPOSE: It can be used to repair the gap of the model, transform the shape and size of the model, fill the hollow of the model, and make the model more textured. Can also be used as raw material for sculpture
  • PREMIUM MATERIAL: High-quality material: We use high-quality epoxy clay material, the shrinkage rate after hardening is less than 1% and the hardness is high. After hardening, it can be shaped with tools such as files, and can be colored with pigments
  • BIGGER PACKAGING: Smalltongue 1 POUND EPOXY SCULPTURE CLAY, 0.5 pound (250g) A and 0.5 pound (250g) B allow you to make more art craft works, the white color is very easy to paint later
  • AFTER-SALE SERVICE: We're sure you'll love using our EPOXY SCULPTURE CLAY for arts crafts & DIY projects, but if you have any problems with it, just let us know for a fast
Type How it projects Common term
Low relief Forms rise only slightly above the background and may look close to drawing. The Met notes that bas-relief can at times be “more akin to two-dimensional drawing.” Bas-relief; basso-relievo
Medium relief Forms project an intermediate amount between low and high relief. Mezzo-relief
High relief Forms project strongly and cast deeper shadows; some figures may be cut almost entirely in the round. Alto-relievo
Sunk relief The design is recessed into the surface rather than projecting above it. Sunken relief

Different institutions explain the categories descriptively or with proportions. INHA describes relief forms as generally less than three-quarters of their real volume and bas-relief as less than half; museum glossaries also use terms such as “shallow” or “nearly three-dimensional.” These descriptions help convey the difference, but they should not be treated as a single standard scale used by every artist or museum.

Low relief vs high relief

In low relief, the shallow projection keeps the image close to the surface. Contours, incised lines and small changes in depth can do much of the work of defining figures, so the effect may resemble a drawing translated into sculpture. High relief uses deeper projection: forms separate more forcefully from the background, shadows become more pronounced, and parts of a figure can approach sculpture in the round.

It adheres beautifully to multiple surfaces including canvas, wood, cardboard, and masonry. Plus, cleanup is a breeze—simply wash your tools and hands with soap and water before the paste dries.

Both remain reliefs because the composition is attached to a background and primarily presents itself from the front. The distinction is not simply whether an image looks realistic; it is how much its forms project and how that depth relates to the background.

What is sunk relief?

In sunk, or sunken, relief, the design sits below the surrounding surface. The artist cuts or recesses the outlines into the field instead of building the forms outward from it. This differs from raised relief, where the surrounding field is lowered so the design stands above it.

How are relief sculptures made?

The method depends on the material and whether the artist is removing material, building up a modeled surface, casting a form or shaping a sheet. Common approaches include:

  • Carving: Removing stone, wood or another hard material to define the background and forms.
  • Modeling: Building a relief by shaping pliable materials such as clay or plaster.
  • Casting: Making a mold from a modeled form and casting the relief. The National Gallery of Art describes mold-making materials including plaster, clay, gelatin and silicone.
  • Embossing and repoussé: Shaping sheet metal into relief. Embossing forms the design from the front; repoussé pushes the forms outward from the back.

These processes can produce either a shallow, drawing-like surface or a much deeper projection. The material and technique do not by themselves determine whether a work is low or high relief; the key is the relationship between the forms and their background.

Where reliefs appear

Reliefs are used in architecture, monuments, funerary markers, pottery, jewelry and decorative objects, as well as in independent panels. Their attached background makes them well suited to walls, doors and other surfaces where a frontal composition can be seen in context.

Two well-known architectural examples are the Parthenon frieze (449–432 B.C.) and Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise (1426–52). The Metropolitan Museum of Art has described relief sculpture as having a history of more than 20,000 years across Eastern and Western cultures.

Relief sculpture and relief printmaking are different

In relief sculpture, the raised or recessed image is part of the finished object. In relief printmaking, an artist cuts away parts of a block or plate, inks the areas left raised, then presses those inked areas onto paper. The National Portrait Gallery describes relief printing as the oldest printmaking technique and lists materials such as wood, stone, potatoes and lino for blocks or plates. A relief print is therefore an image made from a raised printing surface, not a sculpted image attached to a background.

A quick way to identify a relief

  • Look for a background plane: Is the image attached to a surface rather than free-standing?
  • Check the viewing angle: Is the composition primarily designed to be read from the front?
  • Notice the depth: Do forms project slightly, strongly, or not at all because they are recessed?
  • Identify the process and setting: Is it carved, modeled, cast or shaped in metal, and is it part of architecture, an object or a standalone panel?
