There is no single official list of art categories. Art is better understood through overlapping systems: broad art forms such as visual or performing art, and specific mediums and practices such as oil painting, bronze sculpture, photography, film, or poetry.
There is no single official list of art categories. The most useful way to understand them is to treat categories as overlapping systems: art forms describe broad modes of artistic expression, while mediums and practices describe how a work is made. Painting, for example, is a visual-art form and a medium-based practice; a performance may combine theater, music, dance, writing, costume, and video.
Major categories commonly used by arts institutions include visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, media and time-based arts, design and applied arts, craft and decorative arts, folk and traditional arts, and interdisciplinary or hybrid arts. These categories are useful for orientation, but their boundaries vary among museums, schools, funding agencies, and cultures.

Art forms and artistic mediums are not the same thing
An art form is a broad area of practice, such as visual art or theater. A medium is the material, tool, or method used to make or present a work, such as oil paint, bronze, photography, language, sound, film, code, or bodily movement.
One work can have several descriptions at once. An oil-painted portrait might be classified as:
- Visual art by its broad form;
- Painting by its practice;
- Oil painting by its medium;
- Portraiture by its subject or genre; and
- Contemporary art by its historical period.
This layered approach is more accurate than trying to place every work in one permanent box.
1. Visual arts
Visual arts are primarily experienced through sight. They may produce an image, object, environment, or spatial arrangement, but they are not necessarily static or handmade. Painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, installation, projection, and digital image-making can all belong to visual art.

- Painting: applying pigment or another color medium to a surface. Oil, acrylic, watercolor, fresco, and tempera are common examples.
- Drawing: making marks for observation, planning, communication, expression, or a finished work. Graphite, charcoal, ink, chalk, pastel, and watercolor may be used.
- Sculpture: creating three-dimensional work by carving, modeling, casting, constructing, assembling, or fabricating.
- Printmaking: producing one or more images from a prepared surface or matrix. Woodcut, linocut, etching, other intaglio processes, lithography, and screenprinting are important examples.
- Photography: making images with a camera or lens, including documentary, fine-art, experimental, and digitally manipulated photography.
- Installation and environmental art: arranging objects, light, sound, structures, or space to create an environment that the viewer experiences.
Visual art can therefore include a traditional oil painting, a room-sized installation, a projected image, a digitally generated picture, or a work that asks the viewer to move through space. The National Gallery of Art’s collection categories—such as painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, and photography—illustrate several of these established groupings. Its educational material also treats drawing as a broad practice with techniques such as gesture, contour, hatching, and crosshatching.
Painting as a visual-art category
For painters, “painting” is both a category and a family of mediums. Oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, encaustic, fresco, and tempera behave differently and produce different surfaces, drying times, and visual effects. Painting can also be classified by subject—such as portrait, landscape, still life, or history painting—or by approach, such as abstract, representational, conceptual, decorative, or expressive painting.

These descriptions can overlap. An abstract acrylic painting is still visual art and painting, but it is also defined by its medium and its approach to representation.
2. Performing arts
Performing arts are created or presented through live or time-based action, usually before an audience. The main branches are music, dance, theater, opera, and musical theater.

- Dance includes choreographed movement traditions such as ballet and modern dance, as well as cultural, social, and contemporary forms.
- Theater may involve acting, directing, puppetry, mime, storytelling, stage design, and live or recorded sound.
- Opera combines music, singing, drama, staging, visual design, and often dance.
- Musical theater integrates songs, spoken drama, movement, choreography, design, and performance.
A performance is often collaborative. A single stage production may involve playwrights, actors, musicians, choreographers, costume designers, lighting designers, scenic artists, sound engineers, and video artists. For that reason, a work can be performing art while also using literary, visual, design, and media-art methods.
3. Literary arts
Literary arts use language as their principal artistic material. Common forms include:
- Poetry;
- Short stories and novels;
- Creative nonfiction and essays;
- Memoir and autobiography;
- Playwriting and screenwriting;
- Spoken-word performance; and
- Oral storytelling.
Literary art does not have to remain on a printed page. A poem may be published as a book, performed aloud, displayed as part of an installation, or incorporated into a film or digital artwork. Its primary artistic material remains language, even when its presentation also makes it visual, performative, or media-based.
4. Media and time-based arts
Media arts use recording, broadcasting, moving images, computation, electronic systems, or digital technology as artistic materials or delivery systems. They are often time-based, meaning that the work unfolds over a duration rather than being understood all at once.

Examples include:
- Film and cinema;
- Video art and animation;
- Sound art and radio art;
- Broadcast and recorded performance;
- Digital and interactive art;
- Creative coding and generative art;
- Virtual reality and augmented reality; and
- Data-driven and networked artworks.
The important distinction is functional rather than stylistic: media art depends significantly on recording, transmission, computation, moving images, sound technology, or digital systems. It is not a completely separate island from visual art. A digital collage may be visual art and media art; an interactive sound installation may be media art, music, and installation; and a filmed performance may belong to theater, performance art, and video.
5. Design and applied arts
Design and applied arts use creative methods to address communication, spatial, functional, material, or user-related problems. Common fields include:
- Architecture and landscape architecture;
- Graphic design and typography;
- Industrial and product design;
- Interior design;
- Fashion design;
- Urban and metropolitan design; and
- User-experience, interaction, and interface design.
Design often produces a useful object, building, image, garment, system, or experience rather than an autonomous artwork intended primarily for contemplation. However, the distinction between art and design is historical and contested. A chair can be functional furniture, a design object, a sculptural work, or all three. Architecture can be understood as a profession, a built environment, a cultural practice, or an art form depending on the context.
6. Craft and decorative arts
Craft arts emphasize skilled material practice and fabrication. Decorative arts traditionally emphasize ornament, design, and the visual treatment of objects. Both may result in functional, ceremonial, collectible, or purely aesthetic works.
Examples include:
- Ceramics and pottery;
- Glasswork;
- Weaving, embroidery, quilting, and other fiber arts;
- Jewelry and metalwork;
- Woodworking and furniture;
- Leatherwork;
- Paper arts and book arts;
- Basketry; and
- Mixed-material objects.
Institutional classifications commonly group materials such as clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, paper, plastic, and wood under craft. The label does not imply that craft is less important, less complex, or less artistic than painting or sculpture. Contemporary artists frequently combine craft techniques with installation, sculpture, social practice, design, or conceptual art, and many cultures do not use the Western fine-art-versus-craft division in the same way.
7. Folk and traditional arts
Folk and traditional arts are practices transmitted within communities through custom, oral teaching, family learning, apprenticeship, religious life, occupational traditions, or regional and cultural participation. They may include music, dance, storytelling, textile work, carving, costume, festival practices, ceremonial objects, and other forms of material culture.

This category describes how a practice is transmitted and situated in community life, not a lower level of artistic sophistication. A traditional song, a ritual garment, a regional dance, or a family-taught craft may be highly skilled, innovative, and meaningful while remaining connected to a shared cultural context. Descriptions should identify the community and tradition respectfully rather than treating “folk” as a synonym for primitive, unschooled, or unofficial.
8. Interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, and hybrid arts
Interdisciplinary art integrates methods from two or more artistic disciplines into one substantially unified work. A multimedia installation might combine sculpture, sound, projection, interactive software, and written text. A performance artwork might combine theater, dance, music, costume, video, and spoken language.

For example, a festival might present a concert, a painting exhibition, and a play side by side. That is multidisciplinary programming, but the individual works may remain separate.
Hybrid art is a broader everyday term for work that crosses categories, particularly in digital, participatory, socially engaged, installation-based, and performance-oriented practices. “Mixed media” requires context: in visual art it may mean several materials—such as paint, fabric, paper, and found objects—used in one work; in a broader discussion it may refer to several artistic disciplines combined together.

The eight broad categories above are only one classification system. Art can also be organized through several other lenses.

These lenses can be combined. A large public mural may be visual art by form, painting by practice, acrylic by medium, public art by setting, contemporary art by period, and community art by process or social context.

Is “fine art” a category of all art?
No. Fine art is a historical and institutional distinction, often used for art pursued primarily for aesthetic, expressive, or intellectual purposes rather than for a practical function. Painting, sculpture, and printmaking have often been placed under this label, while design and craft were sometimes separated from it.
That hierarchy is neither universal nor permanent. A functional ceramic vessel may be displayed as art; a painting may be commissioned for a commercial purpose; and a designed object may be collected, exhibited, and discussed as an artwork. It is more precise to ask what classification a particular museum, school, funding body, culture, or exhibition is using.
How to classify a work of art
- Identify the broad form. Is it mainly visual, performed, literary, media-based, designed, crafted, traditional, or interdisciplinary?
- Identify the medium or process. Is it made with oil paint, clay, a camera, language, live movement, recorded sound, or software?
- Identify its subject or genre. Is it a portrait, landscape, still life, narrative, documentary, abstract, or conceptual work?
- Consider its purpose and setting. Is it functional, ceremonial, political, commercial, therapeutic, public, domestic, or intended for a gallery?
- Consider its historical and cultural context. What period, movement, community, or tradition shaped it?
- Allow multiple answers. A work does not become less accurate because it belongs to several categories at once.

The best answer to “What category is this?” is often not one word. Describe the work by its form, medium, subject, purpose, process, and context. That approach reflects how artists make work and how institutions actually organize it: flexibly, with categories that overlap.
