In music, texture describes how simultaneous musical lines relate. One useful five-category framework names monophony, biphony, homophony, polyphony, and heterophony. The title can also refer to texture in painting or another field; this article addresses the music-theory meaning.

What are the five types of musical texture?
The five-category framework distinguishes textures by how many melodic lines are heard and how they relate to one another. The W. W. Norton Soundscapes 3e and the Wooster-hosted chapter Listening to Music: A Social Experience identify these five categories:
- Monophony: One melodic line, whether performed by one musician or doubled by several performers.
- Biphony: Two lines, typically a sustained lower drone beneath a more active melody.
- Homophony: A prominent melody supported by other parts, often chords or accompaniment.
- Polyphony: Two or more distinct melodies sounding together.
- Heterophony: Multiple performers play variations of the same melody at the same time, adding differences such as ornaments.
How can you tell the textures apart by listening?
Follow the melodic lines rather than counting instruments: several players can double one melody, while a single instrument can play more than one line. Ask whether you hear one tune, a drone beneath a tune, a tune with accompaniment, separate melodies, or variations of one melody.

These are listening cues, not rigid labels for a whole composition. A piece can change texture from one passage to another.

There is no single required count across teaching materials. The Open University teaches three broad types: monophonic, polyphonic, and homophonic. A University of Rhode Island Pressbooks text presents four main categories—monophony, heterophony, homophony, and polyphony—while the five-category framework adds biphony. These are different instructional groupings, not evidence that one list is the only accepted classification.
