There is no single exact shade established as “Irish blue” by the sources available. The President of Ireland describes the presidential Standard as a golden harp on a blue background, but does not give a paint formula or color code. Ireland’s national flag is green, white and orange—not blue.
What “Irish blue” refers to
The clearest official connection between Ireland and a blue flag is the presidential Standard: a golden harp on a blue background. The President of Ireland’s description identifies the background as blue without specifying a particular shade. It provides no hex, RGB, Pantone or paint-system value that would let you reproduce the color precisely.

“Presidential Irish blue” has also appeared as an informal design phrase. In a 2003 report about Ireland’s EU presidency logo, The Irish Times quoted the design firm’s managing director describing a palette that combined “dark presidential Irish blue” with EU blue. That describes one design context; it does not establish a universal standard.
Is Ireland’s flag blue or green?
Ireland’s national flag is the green, white and orange tricolour. The blue-and-gold presidential Standard is a different flag with a different role, so the two should not be conflated.

| Flag | Role | Colors stated by the source | Exact shade specified? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Presidential Standard | Flag associated with the President of Ireland | Blue background with a golden harp (President of Ireland) | No color code or precise shade stated (President of Ireland) |
| National flag | National tricolour | Green, white and orange (President of Ireland) | Not stated in the cited speech (President of Ireland) |
President Michael D. Higgins’s 2016 speech recounts that Thomas Francis Meagher first flew the tricolour in Waterford on 7 March 1848, and discusses the meaning associated with its colors. The speech quotes Meagher on the white stripe: “The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between Orange and Green and I trust that beneath its folds the hands of Irish Protestants and Irish Catholics may be clasped in generous and heroic brotherhood.”
Choosing a paint color inspired by Irish blue
If you are selecting paint for a project, treat “Irish blue” as an inspiration or descriptive label, not a specification. The official description supports a blue background, while the secondary design reference uses “dark presidential Irish blue” for one palette; neither supplies a reproducible formula.

- For a faithful flag reference, use the blue-and-gold presidential Standard as the visual subject, not the green-white-orange national flag.
- For a repeatable paint match, obtain an approved physical reference or a project-specific color value from the person commissioning the work. A screen image can vary with display settings and reproduction, and the official page does not resolve that variation with a code.
- Record the chosen paint brand, product, finish and formula once a sample is approved. “Irish blue” alone is not precise enough to ensure that another batch or painter will match it.
Irish Blue Limestone is a different meaning
Irish Blue Limestone is a named natural stone used in construction, not a defined paint color. An industry review describes it as an Irish architectural material and notes a darker variety associated with fossil beds. The material name does not establish an official shade of “Irish blue.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Irish blue an official national color?
The cited official descriptions identify a blue background on the presidential Standard and the green, white and orange colors of the national flag. They do not establish a legally defined or standardized national color called “Irish blue.” Avoid treating the phrase as an official color specification or assigning it a numeric color value without an authoritative reference.
