Slate is usually a gray—most often a blue-gray—named for the metamorphic rock. It is a color family rather than one fixed hue: individual slate shades can lean blue, green, or purple and range from light to very deep. For a decorating decision, identify the exact undertone and depth instead of relying on the word “slate” alone.

So, is slate more blue or gray? Conventionally it reads as gray with a blue cast, although some products are distinctly blue, gray-green, or nearly charcoal. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, describes it as “an earthy shade of gray that can range from deep to light.”

How slate varies as a color

Two attributes make the biggest visual difference:

  • Undertone: blue is common, but green and purple variations also occur.
  • Lightness and depth: slate may be pale and misty, midtone, or almost charcoal.

Manufacturer names illustrate why “slate” is not a universal paint specification. Benjamin Moore’s Polished Slate 713 is described as blue with gray-green undertones. Dunn-Edwards describes Slate Gray DEGR73 as a midtone blue gray and Slate Wall DE5797 as a dark slate blue.

Named shade Description Light Reflectance Value (LRV)
Benjamin Moore Polished Slate 713 Blue with gray-green undertones 14.91 (manufacturer specification)
Dunn-Edwards Slate Gray DEGR73 Midtone blue gray 16 (manufacturer specification)
Dunn-Edwards Slate Wall DE5797 Dark slate blue 8 (manufacturer specification)

These LRVs belong to the individual products; they do not define a shared standard for every slate color. Patrick O’Donnell, a Farrow & Ball brand ambassador, summarizes the darker end as “often perceived as a dark blue / gray.”

16 ways to decorate with slate

1. Anchor an empty corner with a slate mirror

A slate-colored mirror or dark gray frame gives a sparse corner visual weight without requiring a large furniture piece. Place it where it can reflect daylight or a lighter wall.

2. Lay slate-gray tile in a bathroom

Slate-gray tile supplies a durable-looking, grounded surface in a bathroom. Balance a dark floor or shower wall with lighter grout, white fixtures, or warm wood so the room retains contrast.

3. Use slate flooring in a high-traffic room

Natural slate or slate-toned flooring can suit kitchens, laundry rooms, and mudrooms. The exact stone will have its own variation, so view several pieces together before installation.

4. Pair slate with warm beige or sand

Beige and sand temper a cool blue-gray and make a slate wall, sofa, or floor feel more approachable. Choose a warm neutral when the slate has a noticeable blue cast.

5. Set slate against crisp white

White trim, cabinetry, bedding, or sanitaryware creates a clean, high-contrast edge around slate. This pairing is useful when you want the color to look tailored rather than moody.

6. Add black for a dramatic scheme

Black hardware, lighting, or furniture deepens a slate palette. Keep some surfaces lighter—such as pale walls, ceilings, or textiles—to prevent the room from losing definition.

7. Introduce polished gold accents

Shiny gold taps, frames, lamps, or cabinet pulls bring warmth and reflect light against slate. Use a few repeated accents rather than covering every surface in metallic finish.

8. Add an orange accent

Dunn-Edwards specifically suggests orange with its midtone Slate Gray. A single orange cushion, artwork detail, or ceramic piece can energize a predominantly blue-gray room.

9. Paint one slate statement wall

A single wall behind a bed, fireplace, or dining table gives slate a clear focal role while leaving adjacent walls lighter. The best wall depends on daylight and the room’s existing finishes.

10. Paint the whole room for a cocooning effect

A deeper slate can cover walls, trim, or built-ins when you want a cozy, sophisticated atmosphere. Repeat lighter fabrics or reflective surfaces so the color does not absorb all the room’s visual energy.

11. Try a restrained watercolor-like treatment

A textured, watercolor-like paint effect can emphasize slate’s mineral character. Keep the movement subtle and limit competing patterns so the finish remains calm rather than overwhelming.

12. Make towels part of the palette

Slate-gray bath towels add the color without repainting or renovating. Combine them with white tile, natural timber, or warm metal for a quick, reversible update.

13. Choose actual slate furniture

A slate table, bench, console, or occasional piece brings both color and material texture. Let the furniture remain the focal point by surrounding it with simpler finishes.

14. Contrast gray stone with wood cabinets

Gray stone countertops can complement wooden cabinetry, linking slate-like color to a warmer natural material. Check the stone in the room because its veining and undertone may shift the overall balance.

15. Build a layered monochromatic room

Combine light, mid, and deep grays rather than using one identical gray everywhere. Differences in value and texture keep a slate-based monochromatic scheme from appearing flat.

16. Use grayscale photography or slate-toned art

Grayscale photography and art with slate-like blue-gray passages add the color quietly. This is an easy way to test the mood before committing to tile, cabinetry, or wall paint.

How to choose the right slate shade

  1. List the fixed finishes. Note flooring, countertops, wood, upholstery, metals, and adjacent paint colors.
  2. Identify the direction you want. Select blue-gray for a cooler feel, gray-green for an earthy feel, or a purple-leaning shade for more drama.
  3. Choose the depth. Light slate opens a space; midtone slate supplies definition; deep slate creates stronger contrast and absorbs more light.
  4. Test in the actual room. View a physical chip or wall sampler beside trim and furnishings in morning, afternoon, and evening light.
  5. Check adjoining rooms. A slate shade can look different when seen next to warmer or cooler colors elsewhere in an open plan.

Paint manufacturers warn that screen colors can differ from the real product. Benjamin Moore recommends free color chips, while Dunn-Edwards offers chips and wall samplers so you can evaluate the shade in home lighting.

Designing with slate without making the room feel cold

Use warm companions—beige, sand, wood, leather, or gold—when a blue slate feels too cool. White increases contrast, while black and other grays create a more dramatic or monochromatic effect. Texture is equally important: stone, woven fabric, matte paint, polished metal, and timber prevent a single-value slate scheme from becoming visually dull.

Justyna Korczynska, senior designer at Crown Paints, notes that “different shades of gray are hugely versatile – they have more color and texture within them than straight black – a monochrome scheme of black and white is much more unforgiving than one of shades of slate and clay, which will change subtlety with the light throughout the day, giving them personality and character.”
