To make lilac paint, mix blue with a red-family colour to create purple or violet, then add white gradually. Magenta or crimson with ultramarine blue is a useful starting point for a cleaner violet; the exact balance depends on the pigments and paint you use.
What colours make lilac?
Lilac is a light purple or violet tint. The basic sequence is blue + red-family paint → purple or violet; add white → lilac. For a less muddy starting purple, try magenta or crimson with ultramarine blue rather than an orange-leaning red. Nerolac describes purple as a red-and-blue mixture and notes that white makes lighter shades including lilac and lavender (Nerolac’s purple mixing guide).

Mix the two colours until you have a purple or violet base. Ultramarine blue with crimson or magenta is a useful combination for a cleaner violet (Nerolac).

Add white a little at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Stop when the violet reaches the lightness you want.

Brush a test swatch onto scrap paper or a spare surface and let it dry before using the colour on your painting. Nerolac recommends testing a mix first (Nerolac).

How much white should you add?
There is no universal ratio: pigment strength, paint medium, and the particular colours in your set all affect the result. Add white in small increments so you can control both lightness and saturation.

A historical starting recipe in John L. King’s 1916-era colour-mixing guide calls for 50 parts white to 1 part rose pink for lilac. It is a starting reference, not a dependable modern formula: brands and pigments vary. The guide also lists a purple mixture of 5 parts white, 2 parts ultramarine blue, and 1 part red madder lake (King’s color-mixing guide).

How to adjust the lilac’s undertone and strength

Pinker lilac: Start with a redder violet base.

Cooler, bluer lilac: Use more blue in the base.

Lighter, softer lilac: Add more white. This also reduces saturation, making the colour less vivid.

Cleaner violet base: Choose a cool red such as magenta or crimson. Warm, orange-leaning reds can make the purple look duller or browner (Nerolac).

Why the mixed paint may not match a screen colour
Paint pigments mix subtractively: they absorb some wavelengths of light, and the combined mixture reflects what remains. A screen instead produces colour with red, green, and blue light, so an RGB lilac on a display is not a guaranteed paint recipe. Sherwin-Williams explains the distinction between physical paint mixing and digital colour mixing in its color-mixing technology guide.

This method is for physical paint. It should not be treated as an exact recipe for screen graphics, dyes, frosting, or textiles, which use different materials or colour workflows.
