A five-pointed star enclosed by a circle is commonly called a pentacle; the star itself is a pentagram. It is associated with Wicca, but the design does not have one universal meaning. The number of points, how the lines are drawn, and where the symbol appears all matter.
Is a star inside a circle a pentacle?
If the design has five points, the likely identification is a pentacle: a pentagram enclosed by a circle. “Pentagram” names the five-pointed star shape; “pentacle” commonly refers to that star within a circle. Without seeing the image, this is a likely reading rather than a definitive identification.
Not every round design containing a star is a pentacle. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, for example, documents a geometric pattern dated 1450–1550 with an interlaced ten-pointed star and two circles. Its different geometry is a reminder to count the points rather than infer a symbol’s meaning from its outline alone.
What does a pentacle mean?
One documented modern association is Wicca. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration lists the emblem as “Wicca (Pentacle)” among its emblems of belief. The page explains that an emblem represents a sincerely held belief that constituted a religion or its functional equivalent for the individual. This establishes a religious use; it does not mean every five-pointed star in a circle is being used religiously.

The symbol has also appeared in other contexts. A 2009 proposal to the Unicode Technical Committee and an ISO/IEC working group, written by Azzeddine Lazrek and Deborah Anderson, says the pentagram has been used since at least the ancient Near East and “has conveyed different meanings to different groups.” The authors note its continued use by modern religious groups such as Wiccans, as well as uses including flags. Those are the proposal’s historical claims, not evidence of one unchanged meaning across all periods and cultures.
How to identify the symbol in an image
- Count the points. Five points support identifying the star as a pentagram and, when enclosed by a circle, the design as a pentacle. A different number of points can indicate a different geometric motif.
- Look at the linework. A star made from a plain outline and one made from interlaced lines are visually distinct. Lazrek and Anderson’s proposal discusses solid and interlaced pentagram forms as variants.
- Check for other marks. Crescents, smaller stars, letters, or nearby symbols may change the interpretation. Consider the whole design instead of isolating the star and circle.
- Consider where it appears. A religious emblem, flag, geometric artwork, piece of jewelry, or decorative motif may serve a different purpose. Context helps narrow the reading, but the shape alone cannot prove a maker’s intent.
What the symbol does not establish on its own
A pentacle is not inherently evil or satanic, and the available sources do not establish that it has protective powers or any supernatural effect. They document varied historical uses and a contemporary Wiccan association, not a single fixed meaning or guaranteed spiritual function.

Unicode’s character chart labels U+2606 “WHITE STAR.” That is a character name, not a guide to the cultural meaning of every star-shaped image; a typed star character and a particular emblem should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
