Serendipity is the chance discovery of something interesting, pleasant or valuable. The word captures more than an accident: the unexpected find has to matter, and recognizing its significance can be as important as the chance that brought it about.
What does serendipity mean?
Cambridge defines serendipity as “the fact of finding interesting or valuable things by chance”; Oxford describes it as “the fact of something interesting or pleasant happening by chance.” Put simply, serendipity is an unexpected encounter or event that leads to something worthwhile.

Not every accident is serendipity. A chance occurrence becomes serendipitous when someone finds it meaningful or useful. In accounts of discovery, the observer’s ability to notice an unexpected result and explore its potential often matters alongside chance itself.
Where did the word come from?
English writer Horace Walpole coined serendipity in 1754, inspired by the title of the fairy tale The Three Princes of Serendip. His meaning joined accident with sagacity—the ability to recognize something significant—rather than treating discovery as luck alone. Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary dates the word to that year.

In a letter dated January 28, 1754, Walpole wrote: “This discovery, indeed, is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word.” The sentence is reproduced in the American Heritage Dictionary’s word-history entry.
How does serendipity work?
Serendipity is useful as a description of how an unexpected finding becomes a discovery, but scholars do not reduce it to one universally settled formula. A 2018 article in Research Policy argues that it takes multiple forms and can arise through different mechanisms.

The article names four types—Walpolian, Mertonian, Bushian and Stephanian—and four mechanisms: theory-led, observer-led, error-borne and network-emergent. These categories offer ways to think about how an unexpected result comes to light: through a theory, attentive observation, an error or an encounter through a network. They are not a checklist that every example must fit. The article’s central point is that serendipity is heterogeneous. Read the article’s taxonomy and theory.
Is serendipity the same as luck?
They overlap, but they are not identical. Luck can describe a fortunate chance event on its own. Serendipity emphasizes the worthwhile discovery that comes from that event—and, particularly in accounts of research, the recognition and follow-up that give it significance. Chance may open the door; noticing what is there helps turn an accident into a discovery.
