A camera obscura is a dark room or box with a small opening or lens that projects an outside scene onto an interior surface. Light rays cross at the opening, so the basic image appears upside down and reversed from left to right. A lens can admit more light than a pinhole, and a mirror can redirect the image onto a convenient surface for viewing or drawing.
How does a camera obscura work?
Light travels in straight lines from the scene through a small aperture. Rays from different parts of the scene cross at the opening and reach the opposite wall or screen in reversed positions. Rays from the top of a scene reach the lower part of the screen, while rays from the bottom reach the upper part.
The basic projected image is therefore:
- Upside down: the top of the scene appears at the bottom.
- Reversed from left to right: the sides appear in opposite positions.
- Temporary: the camera obscura projects an image but does not automatically preserve it as a photograph.
A screen or paper receives the image. Photographic paper can record a projection when used as a light-sensitive medium, but recording is an added step, not an automatic feature of the camera obscura.

Why is the image upside down?
Light from the upper part of the scene passes through the aperture and reaches the lower part of the screen. Light from the lower part reaches the upper part. The rays cross at the opening, producing an inverted image. Mirrors in some designs redirect the projection onto a more convenient surface.

Pinhole versus lens camera obscura
A pinhole design uses a small opening without a lens. A lens-based design admits light through a larger opening and can make the projection brighter when arranged appropriately. Some designs also use a mirror to redirect the image.
| Feature | Pinhole | Lens-based |
|---|---|---|
| Image formation | A small hole selects rays from the scene, which cross and form an inverted image. | A lens gathers and focuses light onto the projection surface. |
| Brightness | The small opening admits little light. | A larger opening can admit more light and produce a brighter projection. |
| Focus and setup | Simple to demonstrate; the screen is opposite the opening. | Screen placement depends on the lens and enclosure. |
| Other considerations | Pinhole photography is associated with long exposure times. | A mirror may redirect the image onto paper or canvas for viewing or drawing. |
There is no single universal lens focal length or build dimension: suitable placement depends on the particular lens and enclosure.
How to make a simple camera obscura
A basic demonstration needs a darkened enclosure, a small aperture, and a surface opposite it on which to view the projection. Household materials can be enough; a sunny day works well for the activity described by the University of Alaska Museum of the North.

- Choose a room or box that can be darkened.
- Block stray light so the interior is as dark as practical.
- Make a small opening in one side or in a covering over a window.
- Place a light-colored or translucent viewing surface opposite the opening.
- Point the opening toward a bright outdoor scene and view the image on the surface.
A lens can be used in a different design, but its placement and the screen position depend on the build. An optional pinhole camera kit may be convenient for a guided activity; no particular brand is necessary to demonstrate the principle.
Camera obscura and art
Artists used camera obscuras as aids for plotting compositions, studying perspective, and tracing projected scenes. The National Gallery describes their use by artists from the 17th century onwards, while Oxford’s History of Science Museum notes their use for detailed landscape and architectural sketches.
Some historical box designs used a lens and a mirror set at 45 degrees to redirect the projection onto paper or canvas. This made the image easier to view or trace. Camera obscuras also appear in contemporary art: LACMA describes Vera Lutter’s room-sized cameras, where light entering through a pinhole exposed photographic paper to create images.

A brief history
The camera obscura effect was known long before modern photography. The Swiss Camera Museum recounts Aristotle noticing the phenomenon and Leonardo da Vinci providing a rational explanation. These are historical summaries, not claims that either person invented the effect.
Lenses and mirrors later expanded how camera obscuras could be used, including as drawing instruments. By the 17th century, artists used them to help plot compositions and represent perspective. The device remains useful for teaching optics and for artistic experiments.

FAQ
Does a camera obscura take photographs?
No. It projects an image but does not automatically preserve it. A recording medium, such as photographic paper, can capture the projection.
