A “wintry mix” means a forecast may bring more than one kind of winter precipitation—often snow, sleet, freezing rain, and sometimes rain. It is a broad description, not a fixed recipe: it does not tell you exactly what will fall at your location or when. Check your local forecast and National Weather Service (NWS) alerts for the expected precipitation, timing, and impacts.
What “wintry mix” means in a forecast
Forecasters use “wintry mix” when precipitation types may vary, whether over the course of an event or across nearby areas. One place may get snow while another gets sleet or freezing rain; the same location may see precipitation change as temperatures in the atmosphere shift. The phrase alone does not specify the proportions, sequence, accumulation, or road conditions. The NWS explains the atmospheric factors behind these changes in its wintry-mix precipitation explainer.

- GRIPS ON SLIPPERY SURFACES: Walk confidently with these slip-on traction cleats designed to evenly distribute underfoot traction across ice- and snow-covered surfaces, as to provide stability on rocky terrain.
- STAYS STRONG IN COLD WEATHER: Thermoplastic rubber sling won't degrade, crack, or fail in cold temperatures for durability that lasts through repeated uses; plus, the thermoplastic is completely recyclable for reduced waste
- 360-DEGREE UNDERFOOT TRACTION: Innovative coil technology provides 360-degree stability when walking forward, backward, or even laterally across snow-packed surfaces
- EASY ON, EASY OFF: Thermoplastic sling with heel tab for easy installation and removal combines the stretchability of rubber for a comfortable fit over a variety of footwear shapes and sizes with the durability of plastic that stays secure when in use
- COMFORTABLE, MULTI-SURFACE TRACTION: Coils are crafted of durable, corrosion- and abrasion-resistant steel that adapts to different terrains, with no sharp edges to damage surfaces, footwear, or equipment.
For a useful local picture, look for the forecast’s likely precipitation type and sequence, any stated snow or ice accumulation, timing in relation to travel, and the alert level for your area. Conditions can differ along a route, so check the forecast for the places you will travel through as well as your starting point.
How snow, sleet and freezing rain form
Winter precipitation often begins as snow high in the atmosphere. The layers of warmer and colder air between the cloud and the ground determine whether it stays snow, melts and refreezes, or reaches the surface as liquid. Surface temperature matters, but a single air-temperature reading does not reveal the full temperature profile above the ground.

- Snow: Snowflakes remain frozen on the way down. Whether they accumulate or melt depends in part on conditions at the surface.
- Sleet: Snow enters a warm layer and melts partly or fully, then passes through a sufficiently deep layer of subfreezing air. The drops refreeze before reaching the ground, forming ice pellets.
- Freezing rain: Snow melts in a warm layer, but the liquid drops pass through only a shallow layer of freezing air near the ground. They reach the surface as supercooled liquid and freeze on contact with surfaces at or below freezing.
- Rain: Precipitation stays liquid through a sufficiently warm layer and reaches the ground as rain. Later freezing depends on local conditions.
The NWS notes that when the surface is at or below 32°F (0°C), snow, sleet, freezing rain, and freezing drizzle are possible; warmer surface temperatures do not, by themselves, settle what is falling because conditions aloft also matter. See the NWS explanation of wintry precipitation.

The key distinction is where the water freezes. Sleet freezes into pellets while still in the air; freezing rain remains liquid until it hits a cold surface. The NWS describes freezing rain as “Rain that freezes when it hits the ground.” Its freezing rain and sleet explainer and comparison of sleet, freezing rain, and snow explain the difference.

| Type | Before reaching the ground | At the surface | Practical concern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sleet | Drops refreeze into ice pellets in a sufficiently deep subfreezing layer. | Pellets bounce or accumulate. | Pellets can make roads and sidewalks slick. |
| Freezing rain | Liquid drops pass through a shallow near-surface freezing layer without refreezing in the air. | Liquid freezes on contact with surfaces at or below freezing, forming ice. | Ice can make roads slick and coat trees and power lines; heavier icing can cause damage. |
Neither precipitation label alone tells you the full impact. Timing, accumulation, surface temperature, road treatment, and location all matter. Use the local forecast rather than inferring conditions from the term “wintry mix.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a wintry mix dangerous to drive in?
It can be. Sleet and freezing rain can make roads slick, while snow can reduce traction and, when heavy or blowing, visibility. Freezing rain can also ice exposed surfaces such as trees and power lines. The level of risk depends on what falls, when it falls, and conditions along your route; the broad phrase “wintry mix” cannot answer those local questions.

Before deciding whether to travel
- Check the latest local forecast and alerts for the full route and travel time.
- Pay attention to the expected precipitation type and changes over time, as well as any stated snow or ice accumulation.
- Follow official local guidance, and avoid nonessential travel during dangerous, warning-level winter weather.
If travel is necessary
The NWS advises using caution, allowing for possible delays, and carrying a winter survival kit. A kit is preparation for an essential trip, not a reason to travel when conditions are dangerous. The NWS winter weather safety guidance provides further precautions.
What winter weather alerts mean
Alerts describe expected conditions and their significance; they are more useful for decisions than the phrase “wintry mix” by itself. The NWS national overview explains the general distinctions below. Local products and criteria can vary by forecast office and event, so consult the current alert for your area.
| Alert | General meaning |
|---|---|
| Winter Weather Advisory | Wintry conditions such as snow, blowing snow, ice, sleet, or a combination are expected, but conditions are not expected to meet warning criteria. Travel may still be difficult. |
| Winter Storm Watch | Conditions are favorable for a significant winter storm. |
| Winter Storm Warning | Dangerous winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. |
For alert details and current local information, use the NWS winter weather warnings, watches, and advisories overview and your local NWS forecast office.
