“Mini Barn Quilt” can mean two different projects: a sewn 26-inch fabric quilt pattern or a small painted geometric design on a panel. For a painting project, plan the display location and panel size first, then choose a compatible surface, paint system, and mounting method. The exact-title sewing pattern is a separate option, not a painted-panel plan.

This article focuses on the painted-panel interpretation. The name also refers to the AllPeopleQuilt textile pattern, so keep its fabric requirements separate from supplies for painting a board.
Plan the painted panel around where it will go
Decide whether the finished piece will hang indoors or outdoors before selecting a panel or paint. The location affects the size you can comfortably handle, exposure to weather, coating compatibility and mounting. Barn Quilt Central advises planning location and size first; its guidance is general, not a tested mini-panel specification.

- Choose a manageable scale. For a first project, pick a panel you can move and reach comfortably. No specific mini dimension is established by the cited guide.
- Match materials to the display conditions. For an exterior project, use a purpose-rated panel and compatible coatings, protect the edges, and select sound mounting hardware suited to the panel and location.
- Plan upkeep. Outdoor paint and mounting are exposed to conditions that can require maintenance; decide how you will inspect and maintain the piece.
Gather supplies for a painted mini barn quilt
Use materials suited to your chosen panel and display location. Barn Quilt Central’s general supply guidance includes:
- A purpose-suited panel or sign board.
- Measuring tools, a straightedge, pencil and eraser.
- Compatible primer, base coat and paint.
- Painter’s tape and a burnishing tool to help seal tape edges.
- Brushes, foam applicators or small rollers.
- A printed pattern or grid plan, plus a labeled color key.
- Mounting hardware selected for the panel and its location.
Before painting the finished panel, test the surface-and-paint system on scrap. This can reveal whether the primer and paint work on that surface and whether masking produces the edge you want.

Make a beginner-friendly design
Start with broad, easy-to-map shapes such as triangles, squares, diamonds or star points. Use two to four clearly different colors so the geometry is easy to read. Sketch the design as a grid or labeled plan, then mark which color belongs in each section before painting.
- Measure the location and choose a panel size. Consider where it will hang and whether you can comfortably move and reach the panel.
- Choose a pattern and map its geometry. Draw or print a plan that divides the design into shapes you can transfer accurately.
- Preview and label the colors. Mark each shape on a color key so the painting order and color placement are clear.
- Prepare and base-coat the panel. Follow the requirements for the selected panel and compatible coating system; allow the base coat to dry as directed.
- Transfer and verify the design. Measure and mark the lines, then check the geometry against the plan before masking.
- Plan masking and paint order. Decide which shapes to tape and paint first to avoid disturbing finished sections.
- Paint and allow the coatings to cure. Follow the product directions for drying and curing before handling or mounting.
- Inspect, finish and hang. Check the painted surface and edges, apply any finish appropriate to the coating system, and install hardware suited to the panel and location.

The pattern page says its fabric yardages and cutting are based on 42 inches of usable fabric width, and its measurements include ¼-inch seam allowances. Use the pattern’s instructions for cutting and construction; these textile quantities are not supplies for painting a panel.
