The basic process is simple: prepare a clean workspace, uncover one small section, match a symbol to its drill color, load the applicator with wax, and press the drills onto the adhesive. A complete beginner diamond painting kit normally contains everything required to start, so you do not need a large collection of accessories.

What are the “diamonds” in diamond painting?

The diamonds are not real gemstones and are not painted onto the canvas. They are small, faceted resin pieces. Their flat underside sits against the adhesive, while the faceted top catches and reflects light.

Most kits use one of two drill shapes:

  • Round drills: circular pieces that leave small spaces between one another when placed.
  • Square drills: four-sided pieces that meet edge-to-edge to create a denser, tiled surface.

A legend printed on the canvas identifies each symbol, color, and often a code used on the drill packets. The chart—not freehand brushwork—determines where every piece belongs. That makes diamond painting closer to placing a sparkling, color-coded mosaic than to conventional painting.

What comes in a diamond painting kit?

A standard beginner kit commonly includes:

  • A pre-printed adhesive canvas
  • Color-coded packets of resin drills
  • A symbol key or color chart
  • A small sorting tray
  • An applicator pen or stylus
  • Wax for loading the pen
  • Tweezers, depending on the kit and drill format
  • Small storage bags and instructions in some kits

Check the contents before beginning, particularly if you buy a partial kit, a specialty canvas, or a project from a marketplace seller. For a first attempt, a complete kit is usually the most practical choice: it provides the canvas, drills, and basic placement tools together.

You do not need a light pad, multi-placer, large organizer, ruler, or specialized sealant to learn the craft. Those accessories can solve particular problems, but the small tray, wax, and single-drill pen supplied with a basic kit are enough for a first project.

How to do diamond painting: a beginner workflow

1. Set up a clean, flat workspace

Place the canvas on a clean, flat surface with enough room for the canvas, drill packets, tray, and tools. If the canvas arrived rolled, let it relax or flatten it gently before starting. Do not use excessive heat or force, which could damage the printed surface or adhesive.

Keep food, drinks, dust, and pet hair away from the exposed adhesive. A stray fiber can prevent a drill from sitting flat and may remain visible beneath the finished piece.

2. Flatten and inspect the canvas

Look over the canvas before opening any drill packets. Confirm that the printed symbols are legible, the legend is present, and the drill packets have labels or codes that can be matched to the chart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not worry if the canvas has a few temporary ripples from shipping. Work on a flat section and follow the kit maker’s handling instructions. If the adhesive appears damaged, contaminated, or badly separated from the canvas, photograph the problem and contact the seller before placing drills.

3. Expose only a small section

Peel back a manageable portion of the protective film—roughly one small working area rather than the entire canvas. Leave the rest covered. When you pause, replace the protective film or cover the exposed area with a suitable clean protective layer.

Opening the whole canvas at once is one of the easiest ways to collect dust and lose the adhesive’s tack. It also makes the project harder to manage because the uncovered surface can catch sleeves, tools, and loose drills.

4. Match a symbol to its drills

Choose one symbol in the exposed section and find its matching entry in the canvas legend. Then locate the packet with the corresponding color code or symbol. Verify the match before pouring anything into the tray.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two sensible ways to work:

  • Color by color: place one color throughout the exposed section, then switch to the next.
  • Small area by small area: complete a compact group of symbols before moving to the next group.

Color-by-color work can be efficient, while small-area work keeps fewer drills and symbols in front of you. Neither method is inherently correct; use the one that makes the chart easiest for you to follow.

5. Load the tray

Pour a small quantity of the selected drills into the tray. Do not empty a large packet into it unless you have a reason to do so. Fewer loose drills mean fewer spills and make it easier to manage a color change.

Gently shake or tap the tray so the drills settle into the grooves with their faceted sides facing upward. If several drills remain sideways, a light tap or small adjustment is usually enough to turn them.

6. Put wax in the applicator

Press the tip of the applicator pen into the supplied wax. The wax gives the tip enough tack to pick up one drill. Reload it when the pen no longer lifts drills easily; pressing harder is not a substitute for fresh wax.

Keep the wax covered when it is not in use so it does not collect lint or dust. If wax gets onto the top of a drill, remove the excess carefully rather than pushing the piece repeatedly into the canvas.

7. Pick up and place each drill

Touch the waxed pen to the faceted top of a drill, lift it from the tray, and press it onto the matching symbol with the flat side against the adhesive. Continue until the selected color or section is complete.

Use moderate pressure. The adhesive should hold the drill without requiring you to crush it into the canvas. Keep checking the legend as you change colors, especially when two shades look similar under indoor lighting.

8. Correct errors immediately

If a drill is crooked, misplaced, or sitting on top of another piece, correct it before covering the surrounding area. Tweezers are useful for lifting a single drill and placing it again. They may come in the kit, but not all kits include them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For square drills, alignment matters more because the edges are intended to form continuous rows. A crooked square can make neighboring pieces look uneven. Round drills are more forgiving because their circular edges naturally leave small gaps.

9. Return unused drills to labeled storage

When you finish with a color, return the unused drills to a labeled resealable bag or container. Preserve the original color code and symbol reference. Never rely on memory or on color alone: similar shades can be difficult to distinguish later.

For a small project, the bags included with the kit may be sufficient. If the canvas contains many colors or you are working on multiple projects, a diamond painting storage organizer can make the packets easier to separate and find. It is a convenience, not a requirement for starting.

Round versus square drills: which should a beginner choose?

Feature Round drills Square drills
Placement More forgiving of small alignment errors Requires more careful row alignment
Finished appearance Small gaps can reveal some printed canvas Creates a tightly tiled, full-coverage appearance
Best suited to Beginners and relaxed projects People who prefer precision and dense coverage
Visual character Can have a softer, cross-stitch-like look Can look crisp and highly geometric

Round drills are generally the easiest starting point because they do not need to meet edge-to-edge. The spaces between them may let a little of the printed canvas show through, which some crafters like and others do not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Square drills can produce a particularly uniform mosaic, but they make crooked edges more noticeable. A straightener or ruler can help with row alignment, although careful placement and occasional correction are often enough.

There is no universal winner, and drill shape is not by itself a dependable quality rating. Choose round drills for maximum placement forgiveness, or square drills if the tightly tiled appearance matters more to you than speed and ease.

Full-drill versus partial-drill canvases

A full-drill canvas is designed for drills to cover the intended working area. The finished piece usually has a more consistently sparkling surface.

A partial-drill canvas uses drills only on selected portions of the design. The printed artwork remains visible in the uncovered areas and becomes part of the finished image. This can suit a shorter project or a design where the printed background is important.

Coverage is a preference decision, not a strict skill ranking. Select a full-drill project if you want an almost completely tiled surface; select a partial-drill project if you like the printed illustration and want less of the canvas covered with drills. Also consider the image size and the time you want to spend.

Optional tools that solve specific problems

Start with the tools in the kit. Add accessories only when they address a real need.

  • Storage organizer: useful for large canvases, many colors, or multiple projects. It reduces color mixing and makes codes easier to locate.
  • Tweezers: helpful for removing crooked or incorrectly placed drills and for handling pieces when a pen is inconvenient. Search for diamond painting tweezers if the kit does not include a pair.
  • Multi-placer pen: can pick up and place several drills in a row. Learn single-drill placement first; a multi-placer is an efficiency upgrade, not a beginner prerequisite.
  • Straightener or ruler: most useful for square-drill projects when you want cleaner rows. It is less important for casual round-drill work.
  • Light pad: can make small symbols easier to see through or beneath a detailed canvas. A diamond painting light pad is optional and is not part of the basic kit requirement.

Buying every accessory before completing a first small project can add cost and clutter without improving the learning experience. The most useful early upgrade is usually the one that solves your particular difficulty: storage for too many colors, tweezers for corrections, or extra illumination for hard-to-read symbols.

Common beginner mistakes and their fixes

Problem Better approach
Removing all the protective film Expose only the section you are actively completing and cover the adhesive when you stop.
Pouring too many drills into the tray Use a small quantity and refill as needed.
Placing a drill without checking the code Match the packet to the legend every time you change colors.
Mixing opened packets Keep every packet labeled with its original symbol or color code.
Ignoring a crooked drill Lift and reposition it promptly with tweezers or another precision tool.
Assuming square is automatically better Choose square for tight coverage and precision, or round for easier alignment.
Pressing too hard with the pen Reload the wax when pickup becomes difficult and use moderate pressure.
Working in a dusty or cluttered area Clean the surface first and keep uncovered adhesive away from debris and pet hair.

How to finish and display diamond painting

When all intended sections are complete, inspect the canvas for loose, missing, or crooked drills. Correct visible errors and gently press the finished area according to the kit maker’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Display or frame the work using a method compatible with both the canvas and its raised drill surface. Do not assume that one sealing product or technique is suitable for every kit. Sealers can change the sparkle, surface texture, or flexibility of the finished piece, so check the manufacturer’s instructions and the finishing product before applying anything.

If you plan to frame the work, measure the completed surface and account for its thickness. A frame or display method that presses directly against the drills may damage them or make the piece difficult to fit. Craft retailers and diamond-art specialists may also carry framing and display supplies, but availability varies by location and should be checked at the time of purchase.

A simple first-project plan

  1. Choose a small, complete kit, preferably with a design you genuinely want to finish.
  2. Decide whether round drills’ forgiving placement or square drills’ dense coverage better matches your preference.
  3. Set up a clean table and keep the canvas covered except for one small section.
  4. Match one symbol to its labeled drill packet.
  5. Pour a few drills into the tray, load the pen with wax, and place them flat-side down.
  6. Correct mistakes as soon as you notice them.
  7. Return leftovers to labeled bags before changing colors or ending the session.
  8. Inspect, finish, and display the completed canvas according to the kit’s instructions.

Diamond painting is low-barrier because the kit supplies the chart and basic tools, but it still rewards care. Clean handling, accurate color matching, and small working sections prevent most avoidable problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is diamond painting actually painting?

No. Diamond painting does not involve applying paint with a brush. You place small faceted resin drills onto a printed adhesive canvas according to a symbol chart. The result is a sparkling mosaic-style image.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What do you need to start diamond painting?

A complete kit usually includes an adhesive canvas, color-coded resin drills, a symbol key, tray, applicator pen, and wax. Some kits also include tweezers, storage bags, and instructions.

Are round or square drills better for beginners?

Round drills are usually easier for beginners because small alignment errors are less visible and the pieces do not need to meet edge-to-edge. Square drills create tighter coverage but require more careful alignment.

Do I need special tools for diamond painting?

Yes. A light pad, storage organizer, multi-placer, tweezers, and straightener can be useful, but the basic kit normally contains the tools needed to start. Add accessories when they solve a specific problem.

The Bottom Line

To begin diamond painting, buy a complete beginner kit, match each drill packet to the canvas legend, and work in small covered sections. Round drills are the most forgiving; square drills create tighter coverage but demand straighter alignment. Optional tools can improve storage, visibility, or correction, but none is necessary for a first project.
