Grand feu enamel is glass-like enamel fused onto a surface in a high-temperature kiln. In watchmaking, it usually means a metal dial coated in enamel through repeated applications and firings. “Grand feu” means “great fire,” but there is no single temperature that defines the term across every craft.
What grand feu enamel means
Enamel is made from glass-derived or mineral powders, often colored with metal oxides. Heat melts the material and fuses it to a prepared surface; it is not ordinary enamel paint that dries in air. In watchmaking, grand feu describes this high-fire approach to making an enamel dial.

Temperature figures vary with the material, object, and maker. Fondation Haute Horlogerie gives 820–850°C as typical for grand feu enamel, while Girard-Perregaux describes firing dials in a kiln at 800°C and Ulysse Nardin describes firings above 800°C. These are workshop descriptions, not a universal cutoff or contradiction.
How a grand feu watch dial is made
- Prepare the metal base. The dial must be suitable for the enamel and firing process.
- Apply enamel. A maker applies enamel powder or paste to the base, often in a thin layer.
- Fire and cool. The kiln fuses the enamel to the base. Temperature and firing time depend on factors including the base material and the amount of enamel.
- Build the surface in stages. The artisan applies more enamel and repeats the firing process, monitoring how the material vitrifies.
- Finish the dial. Polishing and other finishing work help create an even surface. A dial with flaws may be rejected.
The number of cycles depends on the workshop and design: Girard-Perregaux says its dials typically undergo five to ten cycles, while Ulysse Nardin describes one process using four to five successive layers. Repeated heating brings risks such as bubbles and cracks.

Grand feu and petit feu in French faience
The terms also have a specific meaning in French faience, a type of tin-glazed earthenware. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes grand feu as applying glaze and metallic oxides before a single high-temperature firing, around 1650°F (900°C). Petit feu is a separate, later decoration process: the ceramic body is fired first, then glazed and decorated, then fired again at a lower temperature. The cooler firing allows a broader palette and finer painted detail.

This ceramic distinction should not be applied wholesale to watch dials: watchmakers describe grand feu as a process built through repeated enamel applications and firings.

What grand feu enamel is—and is not
Grand feu names a high-fire enamel process, not a particular decorative pattern. Techniques such as cloisonné, champlevé, paillonné, and grisaille describe different ways of shaping or decorating enamel, and may be used alongside firing methods; they are not synonyms for grand feu.
Fired enamel is prized for its glossy appearance, saturated color, resistance to tarnishing, and color that can last. It is not indestructible: enamel can chip if struck. Ulysse Nardin also notes that its fired finish cannot be polished or altered after firing, so repairing damage or correcting a process flaw may be difficult.
