Maundy Thursday is the Thursday of Holy Week when Christians remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples and his washing of their feet. “Maundy” comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning “commandment,” and refers to Jesus’ instruction to love one another. Churches may mark the day with Holy Communion, foot washing, or both; the exact observance depends on the tradition and congregation.
What is Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday—also called Holy Thursday—is the Thursday of Holy Week before Easter. Its central Gospel themes are Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples and washing their feet. The United Methodist Church explains that John’s Gospel describes the foot washing, while the other Gospels recount the institution of the Lord’s Supper. Christian observances have therefore often brought together the image of the basin and the celebration of Holy Communion. The United Methodist Church’s explanation of Maundy Thursday describes these connected themes.
What does “Maundy” mean?
“Maundy” derives from the Latin mandatum, meaning “commandment.” It points to Jesus’ words in John 13:34, where he tells his disciples to love one another as he has loved them. In this context, the foot washing is not only a remembered event: it is a gesture of service connected to that command.

“Holy Thursday” is another name for the same day. In Catholic liturgy, it is the beginning of the Easter Triduum—the observance of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection, which concludes on Easter evening. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales says the Mass of the Lord’s Supper is normally celebrated in the evening. That is Catholic liturgical framing, not a schedule that applies to every Christian church. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales’ Maundy Thursday account explains this context.
Do churches wash feet on Maundy Thursday?
Some do, but foot washing is not required in every church or tradition. The United Methodist Church notes that some congregations include the ceremony. In the Roman Catholic liturgy, the Roman Missal says, “After the Homily, where a pastoral reason suggests it, the Washing of Feet follows.” The USCCB explains that the rite is not obligatory.

In the Roman Catholic practice described by the USCCB, those selected for the rite may come from all members of the People of God. A decree dated January 6, 2016, made that broader eligibility effective. The USCCB also notes that the foot-washing rite has been part of the Roman liturgy since at least the seventh century; these historical details refer to Roman Catholic practice, not every Christian community. The USCCB’s guidance on the Holy Thursday Mandatum gives the rubric and its context.

Common elements include a service focused on the Last Supper and Holy Communion, and, in some congregations, a foot-washing ceremony. The order and emphasis vary. For example, the Catholic account describes an evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper, while the United Methodist explanation connects Communion and foot washing through their Gospel themes. Neither account establishes a universal service pattern, so check a local church’s schedule for its particular observance.
To reflect on the day, readers can turn to John 13, which includes the foot washing and Jesus’ command to love one another. A Holy Week devotional or study guide can be a supplementary aid for exploring the Gospel themes or preparing for worship; it is not a requirement, and the sources cited here do not endorse a particular title.
