Napkin AI is a browser-based tool that turns written material into editable diagrams, infographics, charts, timelines, and other explanatory visuals. Instead of starting with a blank design canvas—or generating a flattened AI artwork—you paste or import text, select the relevant passage, review visual suggestions, edit the result, and export it.
That makes Napkin useful for professionals, students, educators, marketers, consultants, writers, and presenters who have the explanation already but need a visual version quickly.
Napkin AI in brief
Napkin sits between three familiar categories:
- Design tools: You retain manual control, but must build most of the visual yourself.
- Text-to-image generators: They are good at creating decorative or artistic raster images, but often produce flattened results and unreliable text.
- Presentation generators: They generally create complete slides or documents rather than one focused explanatory graphic.
Napkin’s distinctive workflow is text-to-structured-visual. It interprets the relationships in your prose and proposes editable layouts such as a process diagram, comparison chart, mind map, or timeline.

How to use Napkin AI
Creation and editing currently require a desktop browser. Mobile users can view existing Napkins, but Napkin’s getting-started documentation says they cannot currently create and edit them there.
- Open app.napkin.ai.
- Sign up with Google or with an email address and password.
- Create a new Napkin.
- Paste existing text, import a supported document, or use Napkin’s text-generation option.
- Select the whole document, a paragraph, or the specific text block you want to visualize.
- Click the blue Generate Visual control, represented by a spark-style icon in the interface.
- Review the candidate visuals and choose a layout and style.
- Edit the wording, colors, fonts, icons, shapes, connectors, and arrangement.
- Export or share the finished visual.
The basic idea is simple: paste text, generate several interpretations, correct the one you want, and export it. You usually do not need to write a detailed image prompt. However, clear source text still matters. Napkin can organize a well-structured explanation more reliably than a dense, ambiguous paragraph.
What can Napkin create?
Napkin’s documented examples include:
- Flowcharts and process diagrams
- Mind maps
- Timelines
- Comparison charts
- Tables
- Decision trees
- Relationship diagrams
- Infographics
- Charts and other structured explanatory graphics
These formats suit many common tasks:
- Business: Turn a procedure, strategy, or customer journey into a process visual.
- Education: Map causes and effects, summarize a lesson, or show a sequence of events.
- Presentations: Convert a paragraph of speaker notes into a graphic for a slide.
- Documentation: Explain workflows, product concepts, or internal systems.
- Marketing: Create a comparison, timeline, or social-friendly summary from campaign copy.
- Meetings: Transform notes and decisions into a visual record.
The Effects feature can also create styled visual images from existing visuals. That is different from asking Napkin to invent an illustration from an unrelated text prompt.
Custom Generation: more control without designing from scratch
For greater control, Napkin’s Custom Generation controls let you specify:
- Visual type: For example, a flowchart, timeline, comparison chart, mind map, or table.
- Orientation: Auto, portrait, landscape, or square.
- Detail level: Auto, summary, or detailed.
- Stay closer to my text: Useful when labels, terminology, or brand language must remain close to the source.
Choose portrait for document pages or mobile-oriented posts, landscape for presentations and wide displays, and square for social layouts. Use Summary when a long passage creates clutter, and Detailed when the relationships require more labels.
Napkin may suggest visual types while you work, but the result is still a draft. “No prompt required” does not mean “no editorial judgment required.”

How editable are the visuals?
Napkin’s output is intended to be edited rather than accepted as an immutable image. You can adjust:

This editability is one of Napkin’s main advantages. It can produce a useful structure quickly, while a human checks the meaning and makes the result fit the intended audience.
Import and export formats
Napkin’s pricing page currently lists unlimited import on the Free plan for PPT, DOC, PDF, HTML, and Markdown. Importing a document does not mean every document will convert perfectly. You may still need to remove irrelevant material, select a smaller passage, or reorganize the source before generating a visual.
A selected visual can be exported as PNG, SVG, PPT, or PDF when the plan supports that format. An entire document can also be exported as a PDF in formats including a continuous page, A4 pages, or 16:9 presentation format.
| Format | Best use | Important consideration |
|---|---|---|
| PNG | Webpages, documents, and social posts | Can become blurry when enlarged |
| SVG | Scalable vector graphics | Currently a paid-plan export |
| PPT | Continuing work in PowerPoint | Currently a paid-plan export and may need slide cleanup |
| Sharing and printing | Less convenient for rebuilding individual elements |
The Free plan advertises unlimited PNG and PDF export. Plus and Pro add unlimited PPT and SVG export.

Language support
Napkin says users can create visuals in more than 60 languages and that visuals match the language of the source text. The application interface is currently available in English. That distinction matters: language support for generated content does not guarantee that every font, icon, layout, or visual type works equally well in every language.

Napkin AI pricing and credits
The following prices and features are those shown on Napkin’s pricing materials at the time of checking. They can change, so confirm the current details at napkin.ai/pricing.
| Plan | Listed price | Included credits | Notable features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 500 per week | Unlimited editing, listed file imports, PNG/PDF export, built-in styles and fonts, standard icons; Napkin branding remains |
| Plus | $9 per person/month | 10,000 per month | PPT/SVG export, no Napkin branding, bold icons, three brand styles, team management and billing |
| Pro | $22 per person/month | 30,000 per month | Everything in Plus, exclusive designs, unlimited custom branding, font uploads, and optional credit top-ups |
Napkin advertises a 25% saving with annual billing. Paid plans are priced per person, so team costs rise as additional members accept seats.
How AI credits work
Napkin says generation costs approximately one credit per selected word, although it warns that usage can change for complex outputs or advanced features. Free credits refresh weekly; paid credits refresh monthly. Check the balance in Account Settings or Teamspace settings before generating repeatedly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If you run out of credits, select shorter passages, split a long explanation into several visuals, wait for the refresh, upgrade, or use available top-up options. API usage consumes credits too.
Watermarks and commercial use
Free exports retain Napkin branding. Paid users can disable the Napkin Logo option during export. Free users may see the control, but it remains locked. This can be easy to miss if you test the product for free and only discover the restriction when preparing a client deliverable or public presentation.
Napkin’s Terms say Generated Output may be used for commercial resale, marketing materials, scientific research, education, business presentations, and other professional or personal uses. That is a permission under the service terms, not a universal copyright or originality guarantee.

Napkin’s public materials should not be reduced to “your data is never used.” Its pricing page says data is encrypted and private under its stated practices, users can opt out of data sharing, and data sent to AI subprocessors is used to provide Napkin functionality. Napkin says contractual agreements prohibit those subprocessors from training on customer data.
Its Data Processing Agreement says Napkin will not use Customer Personal Data to train, retrain, fine-tune, or develop AI models. It also says that, unless a customer opts out, anonymized and aggregated interaction data and de-identified content data may be used to improve services and models. Prompts and content may be processed through third-party AI inference APIs; the current subprocessor list identifies OpenAI and Google Cloud AI and describes zero-data-retention agreements with them.
For confidential, regulated, personally identifiable, or commercially sensitive material, review the current privacy policy, DPA, account settings, and organizational approval requirements before uploading it. Teamspace administrators control relevant privacy settings for team content.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Collaboration and Teamspaces
Napkin advertises shared Teamspaces, member invitations, real-time editing, commenting, feedback, and team management and billing. It also advertises team-level data privacy controls.
There is an important ownership and offboarding consideration: Teamspace content is controlled by the Teamspace and its administrator. A removed member loses access to Teamspace content, including work they created there. Establish ownership and export procedures before a team member leaves.

Does Napkin have an API?
Yes. Napkin provides official API documentation. The documented workflow is asynchronous:
- Create an API token in Account Settings or Teamspace Settings.
- Submit a visual-generation request.
- Poll the request-status endpoint.
- Download the generated files from the returned URLs.
The documentation lists SVG, PNG, and PPT output and says API requests use the same credit system as the application. The documentation page returned during research identified API version 1.1.16, but API versions and limits are volatile and should be checked before implementation.
Where Napkin works well
- You already have notes, prose, an outline, or a document.
- You need a diagram or explanation quickly.
- You want editable structure rather than flattened artwork.
- You are not a specialist designer.
- You need visuals for presentations, documentation, lessons, reports, or articles.
- You want to preserve original wording while changing its visual arrangement.
Where Napkin falls short
- Semantic accuracy: It may infer the wrong relationship, such as showing a hierarchy where the source describes a sequence.
- Data reliability: High-stakes statistical charts require human verification of numbers, axes, calculations, and labels.
- Design precision: Strict brand or accessibility systems may still require substantial manual work.
- Mobile creation: It is not currently a complete mobile creation workflow.
- Whiteboarding: It is not a replacement for extensive collaborative spatial brainstorming.
- Originality: Napkin does not guarantee that outputs or components are unique.
- Automation: Credits, plan limits, and API processing add operational constraints.
Common failure modes and fixes
The diagram shows the wrong relationship
Rewrite the source with explicit sequence words, decision points, inputs, outputs, and dependencies. Then choose the desired visual type in Custom Generation and enable Stay closer to my text.
The visual is cluttered
Select only the relevant paragraph or subsection, remove tangential prose, split the explanation into multiple visuals, or choose Summary detail.
The output is attractive but inaccurate
Check every label, connector, qualification, number, and implication against the source. Napkin’s Terms warn that Generated Output is not intended to be a final, definitive, or comprehensive presentation of a topic.
The exported file is unsuitable
Choose the format according to the next step. Use PNG for easy placement, SVG for scalable graphics, PPT when someone must continue editing in PowerPoint, and PDF for distribution or printing.
Napkin AI alternatives
There is no universal replacement; the right choice depends on the artifact you need.
| Tool | Better fit when you need | How it differs from Napkin |
|---|---|---|
| Canva | Templates, social graphics, brand kits, and broad design features | More general-purpose; less centered on converting prose into diagrams |
| Lucidchart | Formal process mapping and structured business diagrams | More traditional diagramming workflow |
| Miro | Workshops, sticky notes, whiteboarding, and spatial collaboration | Stronger as a collaborative whiteboard |
| Microsoft 365 Copilot | AI-assisted work inside an existing Microsoft 365 environment | Better integrated with Office and presentation workflows |
| Gamma | AI-generated presentations and documents | More focused on complete presentations or documents |
| Piktochart | Template-led infographics and reports | More template-driven than Napkin’s prose-first approach |
| Excalidraw | Rough, hand-drawn diagrams and direct manual control | Less automated, but better suited to a sketch-like aesthetic |
Which plan should you choose?
- Free: Test the workflow, create occasional personal visuals, and share PNG or PDF files if branding is acceptable.
- Plus: The likely practical choice for an individual professional who needs clean exports, PPT/SVG, and moderate generation volume.
- Pro: Better for frequent use, uploaded fonts, unlimited custom branding, heavier generation, or top-up flexibility.
- Enterprise or team arrangements: Consider these when procurement, contractual privacy, support, volume, or organizational controls matter. Review the applicable terms rather than assuming a higher plan solves every compliance requirement.
Verdict
Napkin is most compelling when your starting point is already written text and your destination is an editable visual explanation. It can turn a paragraph into a credible first draft of a flowchart, timeline, comparison, mind map, or infographic faster than building one manually.
It is not a magic infographic machine, a conventional text-to-image art generator, or a substitute for fact-checking and design judgment. The Free plan is useful for experimentation, while Plus becomes more practical when watermark-free PPT or SVG export matters. Pro is aimed at heavier professional and brand-controlled use. Before uploading sensitive material, review Napkin’s current privacy terms and settings; before publishing, verify the visual’s meaning yourself.
